Paper Launch for AMD Ryzen 9 3900X

"Bestellt | wird am 14.8.2019 erwartet" is not in stock. It is ordered, expected on 14th August - that was the status here for a week at least.

It's not a paper launch. A paper launch is when a product is launched with almost no stock. Basically nobody except the obscenely lucky actually get their hands on one.

Reasons why Zen 2 does not meet this definition:

1. Zen 2's launch stock was high. You can verify by observing the number of benchmarks on cpu.userbenchmark. Lots of these things were sold and delivered.
2. The 3600 and 3600X have been consistently in stock. The 3700X and 3800X have gone in and out of stock a lot, but you could generally get one if you were patient/checked frequently. Only the 3900X has been consistently out of stock. But judging from cpu.userbenchmark, plenty of people still got their hands on one.

I remember when I wanted a 1080Ti FE not long after launch, and you had to camp Nvidia's site to get one. Constantly in and out of stock. That wasn't a paper launch either, because people were still getting them in quantity. Demand exceeded supply, yes, but supply was still quite large.

Zen 2 is very popular. It's more or less the same thing. Of course, it doesn't do me any good. I want a 3900X. I had plenty of opportunities to buy a 3700X or 3800X, but those aren't what I want. I also don't have the time to camp the sites like I did when I nabbed my 1080Ti FE. But not a paper launch. Demand exceeding the supply =/= paper.

By the time they ship any meaningful numbers to the EU they'll have 3950x "on the market". Only select few with connections have them in here in Europe. Retailers were promised stock but they got nothing as the 3900x has been out of stock since "launch". Availability in the US is irrelevant. That's a paper launch for us

Fair point. I don't know anything about European availability. I can only speak to North Am.

This was definitely not a paper launch. Microcenter had a few of them on launch day. They also received a shipment of them a little while after that but sold them immediately. They are simply super hot sellers right now.

i saw 3900x, and 3600 at my local fry's yesterday, after actual launch date i saw 3700x in microcenter.
(in both cases hidden behind 2700x likely story clerks taking them out themselves to sell online)
in terms of newegg... newegg has them, and is trying to sell combo packs.

- The 3600's are quite in stock tho. -

I'm waiting until the process ages a little, likely Oct or so.

I agree there's too few chips in market.

AMD doesn't exactly have Intel's capacity.

Actually, AMD has zero capacity :) Amd's allocation of TSMC's 7nm is split between NAVI, ZEN2, APPLE, and whoever else. GloFo...no clue

capacity is part of it but it also has to do with their lineup of processors.. they're using the same chiplet across probably 15-20 different processors from Epyc to threadripper and all the way down to the 3600. my guess would be that the binning process is a big part of the bottleneck since Epyc is going to get the highest priority. although i'd be curious to hear how it works with the implementation of glofo's io chip and tsmc's chiplets and how much of a delay that potentially add's to the process instead of having everything produced by TSMC.

high end volume issues are going to limit profits and margins. Still, having cpus sold out three weeks after release is a very positive sign. It appears that not enough chips are meeting the high end binning specs to satisfy demand. These shipment batches are selling out in 20mins.

I personally think they have yield problems with zen2 chiplets. Specifically since we see enough 3600 chips, i wonder if they are coming in different packages (chiplets).

My understanding is that they are al the same chips binned. That would mean:
Low end bins are full and high end bins are empty. Yield appears good, hitting the higher speeds appears the issue.

I used the instocknow site or whatever it's called to snag a 3900x from Newegg a couple of weeks ago. I think it was there for 20 minutes.

Adoredtv talks about the current silicon not being up to par based on the process node. Of course, after his latest blowup, I'm done watching him. I actually caught a ban here defending him once.

im sure it wasn't for defending him but the way you did it. probably language or personal attacks.

Yep, I called someone a "peach" when they were badmouthing him. I actually just got a warning. When I questioned the mod as to why the other guy got no warning as adoredtv had an account here and was being attacked, I earned a week off ;-)

Says its two weeks away until restock.

I'm pretty sure the 3700x is a much better seller due to the price point especially here in the east, and they have all kinds of stock of those.

pagind dr terpsy. Any luck getting a 3900x?

Installed my 3900X into my MSI B450 Gaming Carbon board

The Wireless caused BSOD after BSOD oddly, turned it off in BIOS and had no issue.

Gonnahave to see if there is updated drivers for it on the MSI website

Windows 10 1903 version BTW

And they just changed my expected delivery date from 31 to 7th. Screw you AMD! If you can't deliver don't promise!
I'm thinking of returning the MB, and saying fuck it. Actually tomorrow is the last day I can return the MB, because I've had it for two weeks now, collecting dust. And I thought I was cutting it late with the board as I ordered it later than the CPU.

how's that amd fault? >_>

There were never any stock of this cpu, it is such a soft launch that it can't be any softer. The same retailer sold 200 3700x.-s just this week. You know how many 3900x-es they sold? 13. Thirteen, obviously on paper as I ordered over 2 weeks ago, and still don't have one. So don't tell me it's because demand is higher for it. No, AMD didn't provide any stock. Who else is at fault hm? That their flagship product is not available and hasn't been available at any retailer since launch?

then return the mobo, and buy it when you get your cpu... its not like you can't get a mobo. Maybe your shop didn't buy the stock of 3900x as they saw that most ppl will buy 3700 series anyway (and they were right).

so just FYI...
ETA Quantity is how many they've ordered, and when they'll be available.

this picture shows you how many they've already sold (its been in stock today, and its already sold in some cities) ~ This is just one of the online shops.
// Its more expensive but up to you... you can buy one.

I am amazed how many ppl are willing to spend $500 on a CPU.

You want to wind me up, is that it? I mentioned a dozen times that I'm in the EU, and nobody has it here, 99% of retailers don't even list it, and the ones that do have it on backorder, nothing else, ever since launch. Well actually not since launch because the first listing only appeared 6 or 7 days after the paper launch date.

well we are more important consumers. What did you expect? That they'll start shipping to europe when we are still hungry? No stock because we want moar, because moar.

so sorry, i didn't see it that you were from eu. Likely your retailers don't think you guys can afford it.

Srsly return the mobo, and wait for your CPU instead or order from US.

Interesting they are pulling stock from the Dropship warehouses of SYNNEX and Ingram. Which means that will go extremely, I mean extremely quick.

Well, I decided not to return the MB because that model had it's price hiked by 20% since I purchased it. But I might still decide to cancel the 3900x at get a 3700x instead as a holdout and maybe get a 3950 later? hm...

Rather, if you order now then your place in the preorder queue will likely give you a CPU then.
It could be that they expect shipments before then, but they are all allocated to existing preorders.

This is what I don't understand. If a product is not in stock, this simply means that demand is greater than supply. And the product will remain not in stock until supply catches up with demand. Some supply is clearly there based on Nowinstock tracker, Userbenchmark, forum comments, etc. How can people say it's a paper launch based on that?

I just cancelled my order. It said 7/25 when I ordered on 7/17, Then on 7/23 I got a message saying I'll get it on 7/31, then today I got a message I'll get it on 8/07. What is the guarantee I'd get it then? Nothing.

I'm in europe, it's not impossible....
Know of many who's ordered even two weeks ago and got it from caseking already.

AMD said in earnings call they sell 3.5 X as much as the "not paper launch" zen+ so I guess demand is up there.

Most people that are/were currently on zen and zen+ are the ones that upgrade. (to 3900) they were waiting for it.

I ordered a 3700x, hope I can sell it easily when the 3950x comes (when it is actually readily available)
I just can't be bothered to wait another 10 days, when I might or might not get a CPU
