So, a technician built my PC just recently (GeForce RTX 2080) and I noticed that I didn't have the Nvidia Control Panel. So I had to install it from the Microsoft store. Afterward I checked my driver version which is: "419.67" and my "Driver Type" is DCH. I think DCH is just base display driver components which explains why I probably had to download/install the Nvidia Control Panel from the Microsoft store.

So, I'm wondering--was this 419.67 driver just grabbed from Windows Update? Because looking at the Nvidia website driver page, I can see for "Studio Driver" there is version 430.86 and "Game Ready Driver" there is 431.60 WHQL. (Windows Hardware Quality Labs). The technician told me that I shouldn't bother with GeForce Experience as it just hinders performance. But I notice from the Nvidia website, both the Game Ready Drivers and Studio Drivers come with GeForce Experience.

The DCH driver is a new driver format. In my experience, sometimes it works with the driver panel, sometimes it won't open it. Seems like they want you to use the Geforce Experience, with that driver.

For the "Standard" driver, you can choose to install Geforce Experience, or not.

If you have the DCH driver installed, you can't install a "standard" driver over the top of it. The Geforce driver installer will tell you your system isn't compatible. You have to uninstall, first.

Geforce Experience shouldn't really affect performance and it does have extra functions which they do not give you in the driver panel. However, to use Geforce Experience, you have to make an account and allow them access for data collection.

Windows update is actually pretty good nowadays, about using current or nearly current Nvidia Drivers. Your technician may have had that old driver on a thumbdrive or something. I just did a clean install two days ago, and Windows update installed the driver from earlier this month. Since then, there has been one newer driver.

Well, I just checked Windows Update "Check for updates" and there is no new Nvidia Driver. Still using 419.67
So, is there another way I can update via Windows without installing GeForce Experience? Maybe Device Manager --> Display adapters --> Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 --> Update driver?

download the driver(game ready), extract it and then point device manager to the folder. should install just the driver and control panel.

I just download the drivers off nvidia's site with the DCH label. It usually installs the control panel for me without having download anything from the store and I also don't have to use the geforce experience. Pretty easy.

It extracts a lot of files. Asking me where to put the extracted files. Is it fine to just extract to a folder on my desktop, install via device manager, then delete the folder afterward or do I need the files?

yup

Errr, so "yup" means I can just extract to my desktop (431.60-desktop-win10-64bit-international-dch-whql)--I don't think I even need to use Device manager---can just click the install file, install then delete that entire extracted folder and it won't affect the graphics card?

yup ;)
you can put them wherever you want, install them(either way works) and delete them after(might need to reboot first).

Last question, what is the Nvidia HD Audio Driver for via the "Custom" install? I use my Gigabye motherboard Realtek drivers, so not sure I would want/need the Nvidia Audio drivers unless there's some reason for it that I'm unaware of?

The nvidia HD audio drivers are for HDMI audio in case you are using a receiver or a TV

Yeah, I read about that just after I posted. I'm not using HDMI audio to my TV/receiver. Installed anyway. I was just cautious about there being a potential conflict between Realtek/Nvidia but I could see from my system that the Nvidia audio was already installed so shouldn't be a problem to install them again. I did a clean install anyway. Should be fine.

yup that's what it is. I have onboard Realtek and amds hdmi driver, no conflict or issues.
