Corsair Aquires OriginPC

That is interesting they always have full page ads for their PCs in Maximum PC mag. Corsair does the same thing
1-2 pages showing off their latest gear which in the August issues is their custom water cooliing Hydro Cool.

I had never heard of OriginPC before.

My first thought was that they aquited the defunct game studio responsible for the Wing Commander series.

That is messed up lol I can't decide if I want to play God of War 4 or Gears of War 4.....
or just play some Zelda...

While nothing I need, I like the idea of being able to recommend a custom PC build to non-enthusiast friends. The more companies making reputable builds (that aren't significantly overcharging) the better. I like Corsair hardware, so this is likely where I'll steer people in the future.

Dell buying Alienware and HP buying VoodooPC I get. If you're selling business machines why not throw a few engineering hours at a nice case and high margin gaming line. I've always wondered how these boutique assembler-integrators make enough money to stay in business.

How can they be higher quality if they use the same off the shelf parts as everyone else?
Quality might not be the way you’re looking at it.

Parts are the same but cable management and overclocking are available. They use quality PSUs and motherboards and cases. Good off the shelf parts. But they do build it and charge a premium.

I had an Alienware in 99 and a FalconNW next.

Alienware had higher quality before Dell but I’m not gonna argue with someone about the quality of a boutique PC that existed 20 years ago that my parents bought me.

There is more to just the parts use when it comes to quality. FalconNW is known for incredible paint jobs and case works. Sure anyone could put a quality computer together but not anyone can bling it out like they can. Is it worth to someone like you and me? Hell no but they been in business for a long time so people are buying their shit.

Um so I looked up FalconNW for the first time in 25ish years and holy shit they charge $1300 to paint some clouds on your case. Thats on top of the $3300 for a Ryzen 3700X, GTX 2060s, and 16gigs of 2666 (wtf?) memory.

Agree on those acquisitions making sense.

However, the big names that have been around for awhile - just take a look at their markup and it's no wonder how they stay in business. It's impressive they have been able to keep the quality and service up high enough to retain enough sales to sustain that level, especially when you have mass "custom" builders like iBuyPower and CyberPowerPC who appear to offer much the same thing, but with t a much lower margin.

I have no direct experience with any of the boutique builders as I've been building my own systems since 1996 but one thing people aren't taking into account with the prices is the level of customer service provided by some of the high dollar boutique builders. Back when HardOCP was doing comprehensive full system reviews this was always one of the biggest points of interest in the reviews. In many cases when it came to customer service you got what you paid for. The likelihood of issues with the more expensive boutique builders was lower and when there were problems they were usually fixed faster and with little hassle. Top tier customer service is not something to be looked down upon especially when the person buying the machine doesn't know much or anything about computers in the first place.
