Part of me wants a new display for watching the newer 4K UHD videos. Problem is i like to game the other half the time and obviously my current card would have a very tough time with the newer games and trying to play at UHD resolutions.

My line of work keeps my relocating more often than not, so i need to think about keeping it somewhat more portable than permanent. (Cause it will always be coming with me) My 27 inch display hasn't been to bad but i think a tiny bit bigger would be ok to a point.

I guess there never will be a perfect choice? I guess ill have to settle with a 1440p display cause i dont want to game at 30fps right?

1440 works pretty well at 32" and content looks really good as long as you're sitting far enough away. I would opt for a good VA 32" panel. 1440 wouldn't be too hard a workload on your Vega 64 and I am a big fan of VA panels with their really high contrast ratio compared to IPS or TN.

My HP 32Q is a hard screen to beat. It has Freesync, VA, 1400 resolution and excellent image quality. I also got it for $300 at Best Buy and it has a factory overclock to 70 Hz and works pretty well for games. The only reason I'm itching to upgrade is that I'm really missing 144 Hz gaming. https://www.bestbuy.com/site/hp-pav...ack-with-silver-stand/5759502.p?skuId=5759502

If you can afford more, the LG 32GK650F at $440 is awfully nice and one I'm seriously leaning to buying. Several reviews online for it and it's G-sync counterparts ad it always reviews extremely well. https://www.amazon.com/LG-32GK650F-B-Monitor-FreeSync-Technology/dp/B07FLGR2PN

There is a Dell for $400 at Best Buy that I was looking at the other day and was really impressed by it's picture quality. It's a 27" IPS but only 60 Hz refresh rate at 1440 so not ideal for gaming but I really liked the colors of it and it supports HDR. https://www.bestbuy.com/site/dell-27-ips-led-qhd-monitor-with-hdr/6211717.p?skuId=6211717

I've been heavily researching monitors the last few weeks and if there is one truth to monitors especially those you want to game on it's that they all SUCK!

IPS monitors have superb colors and overall picture quality but they all have horrible IPS glow that can ruin dark scenes that can drive you insane.

VA has 2-3 times the contrast of IPS and better colors and viewing angles than TN but is more susceptible to ghosting and smearing and has a hard time being fast enough for true 144 Hz performance.

TN is blistering fast and smooth but colors are likely going to be washed out and if you move more than a few inches off center, the image will degrade.

Out of the thousands of reviews I've read lately, that LG seems to be the best of the bunch in terms of a balance between being great and sucking. Asus has a TN gaming panel (PG278QR) that seems to be worthwhile and is also on my shortlist. Reviewed to have colors that rival IPS, solid contrast but without weak viewing angles. It's $519 right now and seems to be a great choice if you want a gaming monitor that also has very good picture quality. https://www.amazon.com/Swift-PG278Q...s+pg278qr&qid=1563945770&s=electronics&sr=1-1

A good video comparing the Asus with it's IPS counterpart.

As for Best Buy, they have a generous monitor return policy so if you get dead or stuck pixels or other defects, it's a lot easier to carry it back to the store than it is to try to mail it back somewhere. I always try to buy my monitors from them for that reason. You'll probably have to order it though because their gaming monitor selection is pretty small. They will price match Newegg and Amazon but it has to be sold by them, not by somebody else and just fulfilled by them. That LG for example would not qualify as it's not sold by Amazon, only shipped by them but the Asus would.

I’m running a Vega64, driving a 3440x1440 75hz Acer freesync display

I admittedly don’t game on my PCs nearly as much as I used to, but I haven’t had too many issues. I’m guessing the freesync plays a large part of that.

I assume more demanding titles w/Very high settings would choke it though

At any rate, it’s a pretty decent display to pair with the GPU considering you can still game @ 16:9 resolutions w/black bars if you wish... and it future proofs you a bit

If you want to pay 500 then i would buy this one (QLED + FreeSync 2).

Or this one for 350.

They are also calibrated out of the box and have a semi-matte display.

Those are curved screens tho and I'm not a big fan of them. I can see their benefit in 21:9 but in 16:9 I don't think they'd offer any advantages especially considering they cost more.

I'm not 100% sure they're calibrated out of the box. The reviews I've read does show a difference between pre and post calibrated measurements. However the differences are pretty small so maybe they are.

Still a good monitor from what I've read but I think it's a little overpriced for what you get and the LG seems to be better for $130 less.

Another option that does both is the samsung TVs which do 1440 freesync and 4k...

first i have heard of this? does it really look good at both resolutions? Im used to displays looking like crap when using a non native full setting

Wouldn't worry too much about color calibration. If they measure close, that's closer than any gamer or other desktop user needs- including most photographers (source, am photographer).

What you'd want calibration for would be a color-managed workflow. And that means that both captures (cameras mostly) and outputs (print mostly) are also calibrated. If shooting just for social media and smaller prints (like what you'd want for family portraits), none of that really applies; in social media especially, photographers have very little control over how their images are abused once uploaded.
