Will it be OK to connect 8 drives via the onboard mini SAS hd of the and the other 16 drives via 2 x IMB M1015, for a HBA 8 drives per vdev ZFS2 OmniOS NAS...

Or is it best to get a third IBM M1015 and connect all 24 drives via the IBM's?

motherboard:
Asrock EPYCD8

aslong all hdds are connected from same controller per vdev... would be performance issues if u would mix between controllers

Great, thank you for the info, I would have to write down which HDD is connected to which vdev before exporting the pool, that saves me buying and waiting for delivery of another M1015.

I don't think it makes much of a difference at all. I have had multiple LSI controllers at work for years and multiple vdevs usually raidz2 or raidz3.

I believe you have a 12Gbit SAS port on the motherboard.

You need SAS SFF-8643 to SFF-8087

I am not 100% sure if there is a difference which end is the source someone else will have to answer that.

If you plan on plugging each cable into 4 drives then you need something that breaks out into standard looking sata data connectors.
Im not sure the designations, normally that port on the MB is reserved for 12gb SAS connections of as a u.2 connection if it has a bunch more pins inside, but the motherboard says 6gb/s port. I assume a 12gb connection should work but it seems weird to me that ASRock would use a connector for one version of SAS with a lower standard. Normally 6gb SAS ports look quite different.

EDIT: I *think* think is what you need:

the cables is to go from the Asrock motherboard to the backplane on the 24 drive Norco case, on the norco side I think it's the SFF8087, the mobo looks like what drescherjm has posted SFF8643, I have ordered the below and see if they fit when the motherboard comes.
