Nintendo announces Switch Lite handheld, $199

Everyone said that about the Switch at $300 and the 2DS at whatever price it launched at. The Switch is still going hot and there is nothing this year to steal its thunder. If Nintendo markets this right they could be a big hit this holiday season.

Not sure the 2ds is a good comparison because i think that was launched at like 1/3 the price of the switch and the games are way cheaper for it.

And yet everyone was saying it would fail at the time. The 2DS is also relevant here as the Switch Lite is likely going to be heavily marketed towards the same groups that Nintendo marketed the 2DS for.

Yeah this will sell. A lot of people just want a hand held model and $200 is cheap enough for that. $300 is a bit high and it is a bit big to carry; this is smaller and more sturdy. Switch works okay in both but really is better as a home console. If you don't care about plugging it into a dock and want to use it on the go or just need to get it as cheap as possible this will have its place. I see it selling well.

Still think they should've added dock functionality as it would be a good opportunity to up sell accessories, but when I think more about it I see it cannibalizing the regular Switch sales if it could. It is the superior mobile version and saving $100 to put towards the Pro controller which you'll get if you play at home anyways is a good savings. So I can see why they don't allow it to dock.

They'll sell a dock for $79. :D

If your primary use is handheld (and I imagine that is the primary use for tons of users) there is no reason to spend $100 more. $100 is a big price difference and I'd say its not worth it at all unless someone plans to spend over 50% of their time docked.

funny it's like they designed the "gameboy next" and packaged it w/ the tv adaptor and call it a "console" from the start, just to rake in the extra $100 per system. now they are just releasing the switch for what it was meant to be from the start... the "GAMEBOY NEXT"

i was gonna say "more like $119" but the controller is non removable, so idk... prob just is what it is. they prob used cheaper controller parts so once they wear out you will have to buy a new switch lite and then they got $400 out of you when they would have only got $300 out of you if you would have got the modular version.

this will be another experiment to see if the majority of people will choose convenience over quality... to me, this would be a lot more appealing if it was $100. that way us pc guys would have a way to (legally) play the new Zelda and w/out having to resort to a bunch of hax.

2DS was $100 USD, New 2DS XL is $150.

The most curious thing here is if they actually REMOVED the ability for it to dock (ie the charging port will not export USB-C video) or simply didn;t include it. If its the former, I can see how people will be a bit more annoyed especially considering that used Switches can be picked up for less of course, and even new ones can be put on sale for around $225/250-ish occasionally. If its the latter, I don't see much problem, but I figure that 3rd party "dock connectors" or video output knockoffs made for the original Switch will be used with the Lite.

In a way I'm glad the "Lite" version doesn't have any real improvements over the original; it would kind of be disappointing to see a new Switch Advance or whatnot at this point. If this is the "2DS equivalent" thats okay, but I do think Nintendo needs to get their software and account system into the current year, or even decade. Seeing posters talk about how their family would have multiple switches, yet are concerned about sharing the games they bought among them if digital, is going to be a problem.

Of course, I'm happy with my original Switch having some really excellent mods (including a FLOSS version of EmuNAND, finally) and especially the progress of the Yuzu emulator project which is coming along very nicely indeed.

I know a lot bought into this gimmick, like the Wii...but also like the Wii and Wii U, this thing is woefully underpowered, which isn't surprising since it launched with an already dated mobile soc. But when your flagship game Breath of the Wild can't even do a solid 30fps at 900p, this thing is of no interest to me.

I would look into emulators like Cemu (a WiiU emu for BOTW with beyond-console features) and Yuzu (Switch emu making great progress. Mario Odyssey plays WAY beyond how it could ever play on native hardware for instance). Looking at it as a mobile console that just happens to dock is probably a good way to look at it, and even without maximum graphical fidelity many of the games are still fun, but I'm glad that the modding and emulator community have been turning things up to 11 comparatively early in the cycle.

As a person who tends to have at least a decent high mid tier video card in my system to push 120fps or higher, I actually found after a little submersion in it that the games fps really doesn't bother you. Zelda is seriously that good where I don't care that the sysstem is weak and Zelda isn't optimized, it's a damn good game.

You do you, but I'll admit I was a fps bigot but decided to take the plunge on a ps4 pro and and switch and have really been happy with the exclusives on those systems. Worth it imho.

Sold my original Year of Luigi 3DS for around $200. I got it for a great price, $130 if I recall with the free Luigi game and a Pokemon game. So I made a small profit on it and still have the games. Bought a New 2DS XL for $135 right when it came out. That was back when ebay was running big deals monthly, but there was no coupon on the day I purchased it. But it was $135 shipped, new, from an ebay seller.

I am sure we will see similar for this new Switch version as well.

It'll sell fine at $199. There's this obscure little title getting released in November, Pocket-something.

That's when I'll be picking mine up. I like the color and graphics of the bundle ones

We're already a two switch household between me and my girl, we don't need to pick up a 3rd one. I love my switch, its a good enough console that I don't care if handheld is only 720p, the games are fucking fantastic.

I'm still hoping for the switch Pro or whatever to happen. That's when I'll consider a new system. I could use another (official) dock anyway.
