Guestimations on PS5 & Xbox "Scarlet" Specs

do they even need to make a ps5?

can't they just keep refreshing the playstation as it sits?

just rebrand it the Playstation no numbers or any other bullshit.

Ya, pretty much this. These consoles are plenty powerful for what they do. You are not going to play shoot em ups on a 4k 120hz television or anything, the tv specs simply wont support it. I suppose you could hook it up to a monitor, but at that point you are just running a less capable pc setup...

I think it's definitely about time for some new hardware, if just for a CPU upgrade because I've seen some devs specify that they were simply too CPU limited in their game so they couldn't support certain game features or gameplay to be on parity with the PC version (Destiny 2 was one game I specifically remember in a dev interview). But given that most current console games only run at 30 FPS too, I would like to see more games running at 60 FPS or 40+ with Freesync support too. But I'm sure devs will still opt to stick with 30 FPS on next gen consoles still just so they can get that much more IQ out of the games like they've been doing on all and previous gen consoles.

I do actually like to keep my PS4 on my PC desk with my monitor too, because I find it more immersive and engaging than playing on my TV in my living room since the screen is much further, so I actually perform better too because of that. So higher res and faster refresh rates or even Freesync support would def be appreciated by me too, but I don't expect that and still enjoy my consoles just fine on my PC monitor despite them not fully utilizing it or touching my 2080 in terms of performance or IQ.

I have briefly considered putting the xbox on a monitor on my desk, but it's just defeating it's purpose (to lay back and relax.) But there are advantages, I picked up Stellaris for the xbox, but I can't friggen read most of the words because they are so small even on a 55" tv. It's just fine on a 28" 4k monitor, but I am sitting much closer. I typically sit 12-15ft from the TV.

Some interesting info in here for the hardware junkies. Both promising and concerning.

I have stopped watching those Digital foundry videos more or less what they are speculating on is so weird sometimes. I have seen them predict certain aspects of console gaming then turn it around and used PC gaming as an example and that totally is not comparable for the simple reason is that in consoles the cpu is just used for pushing data to the gpu and you might say how is that different from PC gaming it is because all of the console API (the software required for to you program the hardware) is vastly optimized for this in a way where you can get results with the jaguar cpu core driving 4k displays and yes that will not ever happen in the PC space.

Everyone knows this but when speculating on this they (DF) totally let it go and it is something that if you see people speculating you must keep in mind that this hardware is not remotely the same or will function the same if you have a PC at home.

$500 will not be the ceiling the next gen. I am predicting $800. It follows the general upward trend of tech prices overall. Cell phones are pushing $1,400-$1,600 for top-tier models when not a couple years ago the media was crying doom when Apple launched the $1,000 iPhone X. I think the price of next gen consoles will fall in the range of "$599" to "$799."

Also, "guesstimate" is not a real word. I don't care if it's in the dictionary.
The word is a good estimation on the level of the estimation :) . I mean you could say "I'm pulling this out of my ass" but it would not have the same ring to the message you are trying to get across.

The thing is with consoles they need to sell you need to have a bigger user base for developers to be able to sell their products the fancy prancing around on high margin bullshit people want to peddle these days in the PC space does not march well in console land. If you do not sell well your console business is dead ......

Pretty sure DF knows the architecture differences and takes that into account in any hardware comparisons I've seen them do. They recently did a Witcher 3 test on PC hardware similar to the Switch just to see how they could get it to run, then emphasized that despite their results, that the devs could definitely get more out of the console with the tools they have available to them. The only reason they do these comparisons is because they enjoy testing with their own hardware and sharing their findings, and regardless of how accurate it is, it's interesting to them and their subscribers nonetheless. So I appreciate their theories and testing regardless.

They do have other content I do like where they were at Guerrilla games and explained which features Horizon zero dawn used to achieve 4k and decent framerates....

Actually, some TVs do support 4k/120 native; the LG C9P does, and pretty much any TV that supports HDMI 2.1 going forward will as well. Hell, any TV that supports HDMI 2.1 going forward is almost certainly going to have a VRR mode as required by HDMI, making these discussions on fixed resolution/refresh rates moot.

Ya, but how do you square buying a $3k+ tv to play games on a $400 console. You would be better off going all in on a pc...

I've personally got a B6P, which only cost about $1400 at the time of purchase, and the C9P (which is brand new) is going for about $1800 (55" model). And I use it both as my TV and my primary PC display. LGs OLED TVs make excellent PC displays, all things considered, though you do need to be cognizant that burn in is a potential issue.

I like my Xbox, but there is simply no way I could ever justify spending that kind of money on a television. I would Maybe spend $1k on a monitor but it better be a dang good rgb accurate piece of hardware. But honestly that is too big to be a good computer monitor anyway. If you are having to move your head around constantly to see where you are typing when fixing a blueprint / model, or writing a piece of code you are just going to give yourself a headache.

Ultimately I feel these consoles have a place, but after a certain point you are more trying to make them a gaming pc than using them for what they were designed for. That is why I say the hardware is fine. Diablo 3 /etc isn't going to run any faster on newer hardware.

There's a growing amount of people who disagree with this take; I know for a fact we have several people here who use LG OLEDs, and many more that use TVs as their primary displays.

Right, I don't even have to watch he video, and know it's going to be:

Ryzen 2 8-core 16 threads.
Heavily cut Navi, with some form of added RT.
16GB 256-bit GDDR6 unified memory, to feed the beast (16Gbit modules were announced 6 months ago)
Likely some local DDR4 (for the OS.)
A PCIe 4.0 SSD, or at least 512GB, or possibly a smaller 128GB cache with the same old 5400 RPM hard drive.

A price between $450 and $500.

Exactly. You can pretty much take that text and stamp it on the side of the boxes. The only question is on storage which sounds like it may be a combo of smaller SSD for OS and launch files complimented with a 1TB HDD/SDD hybrid - basically what you see in some higher-end laptops e.g. the one in my sig nowadays.

I miss the days when consoles had custom, cutting-edge hardware instead of (what will be at the time of their release) 1 year-old PC technology.

Edit: I'm not so sure how "heavily cut" Navi will be. I think we're looking at a 5700-level GPU or even XT with some reduced clocks. That would be in line with standard i.e. 1 year-old GPU, slightly reduced core count from top-end and reduced clock speeds e.g. the GPU in the PS4 is halfway between a 7850 and 7870 with reduced clocks.

Nah, screw that. That's why we don't have full hardware BC on any of our consoles except a few previous ones that had to bake the legacy hardware into the console to get it to work properly. Plus using Commercial Off the Shelf (COT) hardware allows the consoles to be that much cheaper compared to developing and manufacturing a custom CPU/GPU solution for the console. The next consoles being x86 allows them to offer full BC with the current gen at launch, which is a huge perk for early adopters when there isn't too much software available for the new generation, esp. people who missed out on a bunch of awesome previous-gen games since they'll also be able to have them enhanced a bit with the new hardware.

The Xbox 360 had customized full hardware (1800 XT-ish), so did the PS3 (7800 GTX), the OG Xbox had a full-fat Geforce 3... These were all creme-de-la-creme GPUs at the time of their console's release.

What we're probably getting with the new gen is a slightly cut-down version of what's a step down from top end i.e. Navi.

Look at what has been capable on the weak hardware of current consoles. Having hardware that is much closer to currently available PC tech should allow some great stuff over the next generation.

I think that is exactly what we are getting, just minus your name suggestion.
