ASUS VG279Q - 144hz, 1080p IPS. Late to the paty?

Just came out about a month ago unnoticed. A late to the party, 1080p IPS panel(On Asus site it says IPS so LG?) with 144hz, Freesync and some strobing modes (no idea if it's 120hz strobing or 144)

I personally think it is pretty interesting proposition for those wanting to stick with 1080p. It's less demanding than 1440p and does not have any issues with scaling and so on, which both 1440p and 4k monitors have displaying locked 1080p content. Price is also pretty good at 350-400usd (although not great since 4k 60hz is just 100$ more expensive).
No HDR, no wide gamut dci-p3 space and sadly no gsync version.
1080p at 27" is nothing to write home about but as a user of simple 1080p 27" 60hz ips with no adjustable stand, vesa or any features, this looks like an interesting proposition to me. 1080p is ok with ps4, 144hz and strobing is an upgrade for pc gaming. Vesa and height adjustable stand add versatility that I do not have right now and weirdly many monitors at this price point don't.

Guess we need to wait for some reviews and tests of contrast, blb, glow amount, motion blur, effect of 144hz and strobing on colors and contrast, coating type used and so on.
I am almost interested to pick this up myself but I have a feeling that contrast will crap itself in 144hz and/or strobing modes. Also, 4k would be more future proof at this point probably

I would love for it to be good. Price is good, freesync now works on nvidia, it's ips, 1080p means great compatibility with ps4 and 1080p locked pc games as well as great performance... looks like a win and only competes with 1080p 144hz va curved monitors and tn monitors at this price range/resolution

Just some experience I had lately:

At work I used 27" 1080p for about 4 years. At 100% scaling the size was OK (maybe a tad small, I hardly have 20/20 vision although no glasses). There was some graininess but I was used to it. Recently changed to 27" 4k. Of course I use it with 200% scaling to get about the same text size but because the scaling is exact the text is so much better and smoother. With old apps that do not scale well it is not so good.
And now when I have to look at 27" 1080p of my colleagues I literally get a headache and cannot believe how grainy it looks.
My next monitor I hope would be 32" 4K at 200% scaling.

4k 150 or 200% looks great on desktop. But scaling sucks and I can't run stuff at 4k or even 1440p with framerates over 60fps. I had lg 27uk650 and Acer xv272u... still went back to 1080p because too much of my content is at this res and it's easier to drive.
It is undeniable though - that 150% 4k desktop at 27" looks like vectors and is super clear. 1080p is fine though

At work I use spreadsheets, email, ERP and Acrobat (old version and not so good scaling). And I browse a lot. No gaming.

for work I would get 4k and do not look back. Even with 150% scaling, 4k for work is amazing

27" is too large for that resolution. Take it down to 23"-24".

I can't find any information on the panel. It's probably your standard AUO AHVA. LG doesn't have a fast 1080p 27" AH-IPS coming out until the end of the year.

No such thing as standard 1080p 144hz IPS panel.
There are only 3 models with 1080p ips at 144hz and this is the only 16:9 model. Others are LG34uc79 and 89.
Seeing benchmarks for rtx 2060 and 2070... seems like 1080p is here to stay for longer if I want high graphic settings. So there might be some reason to it.

Well the monitor does not have gamma settings and comes with it set to around 2... so f this monitor

AUO has road mapped both a 144hz 24.5in and 240hz 24.5in IPS (well AHVA) panel for later this year. The 27in 144hz was actually supposedly road mapped for after those two 24.5in ones but is already in a shipping product.

I also wonder if 27in 1440p prices could go down in pricing with more competition due to both LG and Innolux pushing out panels.

I'm also wondering how much economy of scale with the introduction of HDMI 2.1 and possibly next gen consoles might do for the 4k, large size, HDR, and high refresh panels over the next few years.

Do we know for sure a 25" is on it's way?

I'm tempted by this monitor. I'd like to upsize, but like the OP i'm also bound to 1080p. 90% of movies in my collection are 1080p and my PC isn't powerful enough to run anything above FHD comfortably. My current monitor is 23" maybe 25" might be a compromise.

BTW, how does this thing compare to the various VA panels that are out there, like this one:

The Asus is exactly 100 euros more. That's a big difference for a better stand, IPS and some extra features. Or maybe it isn't, i don't know.

Not sure i like how things are for us on a budget, maybe i should wait to see what else comes out of the horizon.
