After what happened with CPUs, I thought I'd better ask before buying one. Do all the modern cards still work with Windows 7, and in my case also work with a PCI-E 2.0 slot?

Yeah you just can't use DX12. Z77 should be pci-e 3.0. Highly recommend getting a better cpu if you're getting a good GPU.

They still work and have fairly new drivers available You won't get to use their DX12 capabilities though.

WoW now gets DX12 in Win7 however, with the promise of a few other titles...

So *very limited dx12 support*...

If you're trying to avoid windows 10, AMD hasn't made a windows 8 GPU driver for over 2 years now as far as I know. So we're pretty much getting stuck with moving to 10 soon :p

I though 8.1 was adding DX 12 and 7 would also get it later but I guess it didn't happen .

Then by your own admission, it is a choice. In your opinion, not a good one, but that irrelevant to my very specific and simple question.

With end of support comes end of driver support too. Much like your XP box, AMD and Nvidia will stop making drivers for Windows 7. You can still choose to use it, and there is nothing saying you can't just use old hardware with old drivers, but at a certain point you will be cut off by the manufacturers who will release new hardware with no Windows 7 drivers. I am in that situation currently with the computer in my signature since there is no driver support on Windows 7 for the chipset I am on.

I also wanted to shamelessly plug Linux as an option for people who don't want to move to 10. I have had great luck with people moving from XP to Linux since they have looser needs for computing. Something like Ubuntu will more times than not support them with all the software they need and then some. Not to mention that even much older systems run better than they would on 10.

Really if your a windows user.... run windows 10. I have no idea why people are so silly. Windows 7 is ancient and windows 8 is only a bit newer...
Running non updated windows is beyond stupid... and MS added all the telemetry people get upset about retroactively to both 8 and 7 anyway.

If your going to run windows run the latest version or tap out.

If you really hate MS enough to spur their latest OS. Cool your not alone. Linux has plenty of great new user distros you can jump into. As far as AMD goes... its the Linux card of choice. You can run 100% open source drivers and enjoy better then windows driver performance. Between native running games and Proton/DXVK there are only a handful of games that you can't play. Pretty much every major game runs very well these days. (assuming your machine isn't extremely old itself. Any modern CPU/GPU combo is going to be able to deliver very playable frames)

Options are clear. Run Windows latest... or switch teams. Both are viable options.

With fast expanding Proton/SteamPlay support I think Linux is a viable choice for gaming these days. If you really want to avoid Windows 10 then I agree with others here that you should look into a few of the popular Linux distros. If you're concerned about cost, shoutout to ickywu who has various Windows 10 keys on sale here starting from $8.

Windows 7, while a good and stable OS is entering the last phase of it's support from Microsoft.
I would recommend simply moving on. But that said, my GTX 1080 Ti runs fine on W7.
I am one of the last to start using 10 and I have to say the jump was simple.
DX 12 is actually worth it. You can see a remarkable difference in Metro Exodus between DX 11 and DX12.

Go over to Guru3D, there is a link there to a store that sells W10 Pro keys for 13 bucks.

I bought a handful and converted all my machines. Easy. less than one hour for each transfer......

With how things are going and the history of Microsoft dealing with Windows 7 after Window 10 was released, I think Microsoft is going to really try and push people out of Windows 7. I'm expecting very aggressive measures put in place from Microsoft to get people off of Windows 7.

I would expect the last round of security updates to feature nag screens.

I would also not be surprised if they announced a 6 month reprieve for consumers... with each extended update including more and more annoying nag screens and warnings. Perhaps even special freebie upgrade offers again.

I'mvery invested in Win7. I've got lots of hardware it fully supports. Many 7 licences that are allready paid for
No games or apps that run any better than 10. And let me ask the Win10 worshippers here, this. What makes you even assume I'm not running Win10 already? I am in fact there's this thing called a dual boot where you can have Win7 and Win10 installed both on the same system at once. I can boot into Win10 anytime I want. I tend not to though. You know why? Because if I do, it's a hellish experience. Windows 10 always hogs my entire connection and that makes it effectively impossible for me to play GTA Online at all on my humble 12k internet connection. Thanks for answering the video card question though. It sounds like I can uogradu ir one more time before moving over to gaming entirely exclusively on my PS-Vita. ^_^

Really your windows 7 box shouldn't be connected to the internet any more. Without solid security updates it won't be long until users like you that insist on running a deprecated OS will be the security hole the rest of us have to fear. I have enough of that I have to deal with during corporate Mergers and buyouts. I really don't need Joe user who loves their windows seven getting on my network and breaking shit.

Sigh... Sorry I'm a bit bitter about that it may have come across stronger than I really wanted.

And your 12k internet connection is SLOWER THAN DIALUP. Geezus man I think I have a 56k modem in a box somewhere I'll send you. It'll quadruple your speed!

You don't have to worry about sounding bitter.... windows xp users are the computer equivalent of anti vaxers.

Soon windows 7 users can be added to that list. ;)

Might I suggest taking a look at Jason Evangelho's series of articles on gaming on Linux? e.g. Manjaro 18 Linux Gaming Report: This Is The Distro To Beat

I may have wrote that wrong, I apologise. It's 12 Kilobits/128 Kilobytes. I always get those two terms mixed up. Either way, my internet is slow enough tgth all the crap Win10 does in the background against my will makes it unusable. My phone has an operating system far more out of date and I get by just swimmingly with it. I've always been good at doing a lot with very little.

That's true, Grimlaking . If ZodaEX is OK with reinstalling e.g. games if the PC gets ransomwared (basically the worst case scenario for local data loss) then yeah, run whatever is needed.

With an internet connection so small, then I don't think that your machine will be much of a threat to the world in terms of DDOS or remote control. Please be aware for your own safety that there exists the risk of identity theft or e.g. online banking details stolen.

I mean I don't use AV software on my computer, so why use it on my body? :confused:o_O

Join the Windows 10 master race hop on board I was hesitant from upgrading from Windows 8 even but it was worth it. Despite having to format a few times from user errors but a fresh install is always worth it. I paid big bucks for a Windows 8 key as well but then that just meant Windows 10 was a free upgrade.

I've been expecting something similar too, an ~35% remaining marketshare is a giant ticking timebomb for the internet; but we're barely more than a half year out and MS's continued silence is starting to get nervous making.

As far as I know, the free upgrade using a Windows 7 key is still working. I doubt they will change that before they cut off support and add annoyances to windows 7 to move people to 10.

Could you just run a windows 7 VM in Win10?

...that deliberately emulates shit hardware?

...or just continue using Windows 7? as it remains the most fastest gaming OS, planet-side, till 2020?

Which, may I remind you, hasn't happened yet?

Just a pro tip there, members.. ;)

Source? I haven't found a single article that shows Windows 7 being faster than Windows 10. In anything. I don't even like Windows 10 but know better than to say that 10 is slower than 7.

In 2015 on my 4790K I was getting nearly double the frame rate in CS:GO using Windows 7. I would certainly hope that isn't the case anymore, that was day 1 Win10. I've kept that rig on Windows 7, but come Ryzen upgrades in the next month or two I'm switching to Windows 10.

I'd been running a dual boot with Win7/Win10 for a good long while and had been routinely testing sustained framerates in my usual games with FRAPS. Windows 7 is always faster. It's just fact. I can't re-test now as I've recently upgraded to an NVMe drive as my boot drive and just didn't bother putting Windows shitty 10 back on it!

Latest is not always greatest.
