I've been on 8.1 for 5 to 7 yrs now but finally thinking of doing a fresh install as this one is around 7 yrs old. Was thinking of whether going to 10 pro was worth it for gaming and general use. I have 10 on my tablet and get annoyed with constantly updating and the updates cause more issues than they fix. 8.1 has been smooth with almost everything so not sure what to do advice is appreciated!

With the pro version, you can delay major updates, and delay regular updates for 30 days (have Windows Update set to "Semi-annual channel" and the Feature Update deferred for 365 days.) I built a 8.1 rig to replace my 8 year old install of windows 7, but I may decide to just upgrade it to 10 and be done with it. I heard with the new release 1903, there is a known issue with the Advanced Windows Update settings that seems to effect some PCs upgrading to 1903. The settings to defer quality updates up to 30 days and feature updates up to 365 days (in Win10 Pro) has disappeared. It's a known issue, and doesn't happen to everyone.

I'm currently using 1809 with no issues on a fresh install.

I guess it sucks you can't opt out to install updates at all. I have win 10 home on my tablet and every time I've updated something went wrong.. Once the WiFi was all screwy another time the blue tooth would no longer work and I was forced to get a 3rd party app to make it work...anyways I constantly need to decline updates when I'm on WiFi bc I've finally got everything working correctly on the tablet and feel if I ever do the big 3 gig update it might screw something up more! Anyways for a desktop pc I would hate to have to do updates all the time or decline them all the time bc they cause issues. But does win 10 pro actual make a huge difference in gamig over 8.1 pro?

If your into using AMD gpus then yes in some games the performance is better. Nvidia cards likely makes zero difference

Another bummer with keeping Win 8.1 Pro going is if you have an AMD based video card your out of luck for updated drivers, last I checked AMD has 2017 era drivers posted for their cards and 8.1. Nvidia is at least supporting 8.1 with current drivers.

I would be using 8.1 Pro myself if it wasn't for the AMD driver issue, as I bought some spare keys a few years ago. May I suggest learning about Windows 10 LTSB and LTSC editions..............................

If your device is prompting for updates constantly and I don't mean that in a hyperbole way but in a "literally constant" way, that installation clearly has some problem. Windows 10 traditionally rides the same Patch Tuesday schedule as all of MS's other OSs. You may have the wrong first impression if you haven't seen any other Win10 machines in the last four years.

Its just because 8 is already in old list so we do not get much update on that. where in windows 10 is been researched and worked on for all the latest features and compatibilities.

t’s not perfect and it’s now a permanent work in progress, but Windows 10 shows that Microsoft can pull off what many thought impossible: an operating system that sits comfortably on desktops, laptops and tablets.

Windows 8 and 8.1 now feel like the prototypes Microsoft had to work through to find an operating system that worked on all three types of computer, and in many ways it’s a shame that process had to be done in public, but Microsoft’s not only heard the howls of complaint about Windows 8, but acted upon them.

If Games/Gamers rightly shied away from Windows 8, we can see few reasons to shun its successor. The Start menu is less jarring and intimidating than its Start screen predecessor, the migration path is smoother and there are numerous security and productivity benefits. Despite the kinks, we would wholeheartedly recommend upgrading both existing equipment and pre-installing Windows 10 on new machines.
