Currently running my games on regular sata HD not ssd. I've been out the loop for 5 to 7 yrs as that's normally my upgrade window lol. Anyways I have windows alone on a 250gb Samsung ssd and would like to put my games solely on 1 drive that's around 2TB as games are starting to get larger and larger. What would be best to get that would show a considerable difference in speed over my regular sata hd ? My current mobo is a Asus z97-a.

I can't imagine running games from a SSD - load times, especially for online competitive games, are important... a HDD would drive me insane. Get whatever you can afford and call it good.

What do you mean you can't imagine running games on an ssd? I can afford either but I don't care to buy something unless there is a noticeable difference in performance. So I'm wondering if in games the ssd or the m2 will be a huge difference over a regular mechanical sata hd.

I think he meant to say he couldn't image running games from a HDD.

First, there are M.2 Sata drives and there are M.2 NVME drives. Your motherboard doesn't appear to support M.2 Sata. Your M.2 is also older and only supports PCIe 2.0 x2. That will limit the sequential speeds, I'm not sure to what but I would guess probably around 900MB/s. Z97 was in the early M.2 days, if you google there are a lot of people having complications running them so it might be best to just stick to 2.5' Sata.

Thanks for the heads up dermen appreciate that info. I googled a few speed tests and there isn't a huge diff in speed and it's only when loading. Right now I'm running 1.5 TB for gaming so I'd need to go with a 2TB ssd
