DOOM ETERNAL Announced with Trailer

Must purchase. Had sooooo much fun with Doom 16! That said, I never finished it. Not sure why. Will fix that soon.

I'm definitely in for any Doom game. Thought 2016 was pretty great. I just wish they'd go back to a a creepier aspect like Final Doom and Ultimate Doom. I loved the Playstation 1 version best because of the creepy, unsettling music that had you creeping around every corner scared of what was going to pop out. That was my gripe with Doom '16, you'd creep along, then the heavy metal music would start and you'd be ambushed by 1000 demons at once. You kill them all then creep along to the next spot where the heavy metal music starts and you're ambushed by 1000 demons. Don't get me wrong, I loved the game and have replayed it a couple times now but I wish they could make another game that captures the atmosphere of the Playstation version of Doom and Final Doom.

My favorite was this one on the Mount Erebus level. Creepy ass music with distorted babies crying in the background.

This is pretty much what I though the 2016 Doom was lacking. The design of the demons were too "alien" style like I mentioned, but the generally creepy atmosphere was also mostly not there. BTW I love this Mt. Erebus track. Actually the soundtracks of the games clearly shows the major difference between old Doom and the 2016 Doom (and most likely Doom Eternal too). In original Doom you hear lots homages to Black Sabbath, older Metallica and older metal in general and the atmosphere of the game reflects that. Doom 2016 on the other hand is full blown Industrial Metal and Djent, and again the game atmosphere reflects that, its more "bombastic". But the game was so good that it was all mostly forgiven.

If I would put the games in real life songs from real bands, this is Doom 1 and 2 in a nutshell:

...and this is Doom 2016

Both IMHO excellent but in different way. Personally I lean towards the former though.

Personally, I think the more industrial metal sort of thing works better due to the fact that Doom isn't just a game about hell. It's about technology, biomechanics, AND demons. I think this sort of music fits that aesthetic pretty well. It suits the tech, the giant foundries, machinery, etc. Just personal taste of course. I've always leaned toward the electronic styles myself musically, industrial, some of the more technical math-metal and sci-fi nerd metal (Vektor, Meshuggah) though, so I'm biased.

I'm confused. Is it DOOM Eternal or Doom Hell on Earth? I don't really like the former and obviously I love the second but that's already the name of DOOM II.

I enjoyed DOOM 2016 myself, though I can't say I enjoy it the way I enjoy the originals (and I still play on original DOS hardware). DOOM 2016 felt more like a Serious Sam style wave runner to me, which is great and I love me some Serious Sam, but it just doesn't have that high octane feeling of the originals, and sorely lacks the Romero level design.

Anyway, as long is they don't wreck DOOM with politics like they have with Wolfenstein, I'll be buying it.

Echoing the desire for co-op.

MP got better in 2016 as the patches rolled out but the cheaters killed it for me. You can only get insta-gibbed by the lightning gun so many times

Masterpiece, and the soundtrack is "Oh My God" worthy. Although if you don't care for that kind of music then its a bummer.

FYI, I think Doom 2016 is on newegg flash for like $15 with all dlc.

What's to be confused about? The splash screen in the teaser in the first post of this thread says "DOOM ETERNAL." Kyle added the "hell on earth" descriptor because that's what the setting is.

Also, MachineGames is a completely different developer based in Sweden, and we know how cucked Sweden is.

I just want the classic doom 1 and 2 levels redone with today's tech. Same secrets and all. Make it a DLC to Eternal once we beat it.

Just grab a source-port, texture pack, (maybe a model pack) and play it. The source-ports all add proper mouse-look, some even add jumping. If all you want is a modern way to play the old games, these work amazingly well. zDoom or the Doomsday Engine are probably the best ones. It's not QUITE the same as fully modern 3D artwork granted, but then, all of those old levels are actually pretty basic anyway, and I'm not sure they'd translate well to something completely modern. No overlapping floors and other limitations of the time. It would be a lot of work for something like that. That said, if someone did it, I'd still play it. :D

Machine games is made up of ex-Starbreeze people though, and they've made a lot of cool games. Enclave, Riddick, etc.

Not knocking their abilities as developers, just explaining their social commentary slant. As long as you put out a good product I couldn't care less about your opinions on social and political issues, but I'm still going to point it out.

Thank you. It managed to fly right over my head. Lol.

Poor Sweden. Where is Odin when you need him..

Doom 2016 was my GOTY.

No, it's not GOTY because the multiplayer sucked even worse than Doom 3 (if that was even possible). This is from ID, the former kings of multiplayer DM.

It was a solid single-player game, but not worth more than the $40 I paid for it through Amazon.

The MP isn't actually bad at all. It didn't start off all that great, but it's perfectly fine now. I just doubt anyone is still playing it at this point. I haven't tried. The problem was that they farmed it out before release. After a bit, they took it back over, fixed things, added things, and it actually turned out great. Just a shame it wasn't released that way in the first place, or it would have been more popular. I also wouldn't say it wasn't the GOTY for 2016 just because of the MP half. The SP was exemplary.

But will it have true co-op multiplayer (not that failure snap map garbage)?

Yes, please. I've had a ton of fun with the Doom 3 Last Man Standing mod. Such an amazing coop mod, and I know id could do better.

Did they change out the maps for new ones? Because that was the bulk of the problem, along with poor weapon play balance and cheaters (the parts you say they fixed).

Unless you rip out the uninspired, rushed MP-only maps and start over, no number of smaller tweaks will fix the broken game.

They added maps though they were in DLC packs. I believe they also added play styles that had floor pickups for weapons, etc. However, I only hopped into a few matches after some of the changes were announced, and didn't really get a feel for some of it. It felt better overall, but I couldn't tell you how it is now. The last time I played it was a big improvement though. I don't really have a lot of time to play MP games right now. I'd love to hop in though and give it a try again soon. The changelogs after id took it back were huge. The problem I have, is that I typically would play this sort of thing LAN only, so without dedicated servers, it loses something for me specifically. I still play Q3A and Q4 multiplayer with my kids because I can toss up a server on a whim, and we're playing immediately without internet randomites. I do think you can set up private matches in Doom 2016 now, but haven't tried.

Hmm... I actually have time tonight for once... Might jump in and play a bit. For science.

If it's DLC, then they didn't fix shit. An already dead MP game has ready-to-go fixed maps stuck behind a pay wall!

Even in popular MP games, the paid DLC maps ARE NEVER POPULAR FOR MORE THAN A FEW WEEKS AFTER RELEASE due to the small percentage of total owners. That was the broken thought train driving the fail that was Doom 2016's MP.

Successful MP games also get map packs, add-ons, etc. after the game is released. The focus for Doom 2016 (as it should have been) was the single player. Just like ALL PREVIOUS DOOM games. MP wasn't the focus of Doom, Doom 2, or Doom 3. Sure Doom 1 and Doom 2 became HIGHLY successful multiplayer games, but that's not what they were designed around. That came later, and became popular as a product of the times, and the fact that they were the first of their kind.

id contracted the MP out to another company with a history of making semi-successful console MP games. I agree that this was a mistake. I'm sure it made sense from some angle. The way it actually played out though, was that people didn't like it, especially PC players who don't like loadouts for one example. They realized this (fairly early on too I might add) took it back over, and tweaked the hell out of it until it more closely resembled what people wanted. I think they did a great job. It may have been too late though. Then came more map packs, play styles, etc.

If you don't like DLC, you're in for a LOT of future disappointment, as ALL games have been going that route since Oblivion first kicked it off with horse armor. Occasionally a company will stand up, release content for free, and try to fight that, (still kind of as an angle for fan support) but DLC and Season Passes is how things go. Just be happy we're not fully into the games as a service era that's lurking on the horizon. That's when things are REALLY going to suck.

Other than initially making the bad call to farm out the MP for Doom, id handled things quite well. I'm also more than certain that Bethesda/Zennimax had more to do with how the DLC packs were arranged than id themselves.

Once again Doom was never designed with multiplayer as the center focus. Not in the whole history of the series. It had it. It implemented better than anyone else at the time, and became popular, but they were ALL single player games at the core. If they made a multiplayer-centric Doom game in lieu of a single player game, I think you'd find more people disappointed than happy.

Also, they have Quake Champions (which is just now starting to get into the shape that it should be) if you want a proper id-style multiplayer experience. Good maps, floor pickups, and while they do have some "abilities" they aren't central to playing the game. It's still very much a fast arena shooter with an id flair.

Oh, they also made all the DLC free a while back, and rolled it into the main game. So all of the extra stuff is included if you have the game at all.

It was MY GOTY.

I had fun for the couple hours I played the MP. But that is not the draw of the game. I went in expecting to not touch the MP at all, but it turned out to be not too terrible.

DOOM Eternal will support Ray Tracing

As Marty Stratton said when asked about RTX:

“RTX makes it look, you know, amazing. There are great benefits but it doesn’t necessarily expand our audience or that the way that the way that something like Stadia does so, but absolutely people can look forward to DOOM Eternal and id Tech 7 supporting ray tracing. Absolutely. I mean we love that stuff, the team loves it and I think we’ll do it better than anybody honestly.”

If there's one person (and team, by inference) I want to see tinker with raytracing, its Tiago Sousa. He / they really know how to wring performance out of a system.

I'm assuming that's from the same folks did published the Game Programming Gems series? I have a whole stack of those in my closet.. they were really good books back when I was studying

This and Cyberpunk 2077 are going to be day one purchases for me...though I will need to upgrade I think for Cyberpunk 2077 - but Doom Eternal should run just fine with what I have at 1080p with all the good shit cranked up.

Excited!
