How anyone can throw shade at AMD's ryzen 3000 lineup given the alternative is mind boggling to me.

AMD: Announces 12 core chip.
Everyone: But what about the 16 core?
AMD: Announces 16 core chip.
Everyone: WHO THE HELL NEEDS 16 CORES?

Then go buy an Intel you schmucks! :banghead:

I went intel because:
1. Mature platform, Lakes have been iterated on for years
2. I needed something quickly (was buying under duress)
3. I needed something that was quick
4. I had a bad experience with Ryzen (1700/asus x370 prime pro) with respect to software compatibility and hardware.

Just highlighting #1 to emphasize my point from before, Coffee Lake CPUs can top 5ghz due to being on a super mature platform that's had years of refinement. Ryzen caught up relatively fast, looks like the 5 ghz unicorn on ambient should be in our sights for 7nm+ (which would equate to roughly 8-9% more performance than a 4.6ghz model with same IPC).

There will be more complaining to come if/when a 5ghz all core OCed 9900k is still beating (only marginally) a 4.5-4.6ghz all core 3800x in game benchmarks. I suspect such is the case and the reason why AMD priced so aggressively. Non-issue to me due to getting 50% more cores for the same money, my VM will be happy..

I'm hoping to start on an x470 w/ 3800x overclocked and sometime next year move on to x570 with a 16 core Zen 2+. Way better experience than I got with my totally dead end z97 + 4790k build.
 
I was gonna wait to see what happens with Threadripper, but the 3950X does look plenty. My build though is likely in the new year and so lots can happen by then.

I'm thinking they will probably announce the new Threadripper before the 3950x is released.
 
Sometimes I feel like these comments are a small step above youtube level.

This thing is hitting 5434 pts at 5.0 ghz. That means even if you manage 'only' 4.5 ghz, you are looking at 4890 points all things equal and linear scaling.

That is insane and better than a 16 core Intel sees with 5.0 ghz.

All things won’t be equal in scaling though, (have no read the article) quoted RAM speed is ~4500. I could be wrong but I don’t see average joe running that high of clocked ram.

Agree, I cannot see this being the norm. Too many variables for the unknowing to grasp, and in the end the additional noise and power may not be worth it for daily use.

I myself cannot see a sub ambient “kit” that cost less than $1000. However, a DIY’er can do it for less.

Good for you. Then put an 8 core zen 3 at 4.5 ghz against it. Again linear scaling, (yes, ram will not be as high, but you typically lose some scaling with more cores) and you are looking at 2445 points with less heat and power.

I agree that we need to wait as Idiotincharge said, but things are looking very promising so long as you can ignore arbitrary numbers like 5.2 GHZ SUCKERZ!!!

That's really the one that gives me pause. Most development has been so intel-centric that AMD compatibility/performance edge cases are guaranteed to crop up.

As much as I want 3k Ryzen to do well, I have a hard time even believing any of the AMD benchmark scores. I believe them as much as I believe the Intel slides they showed.

I’m pretty sure I used to have more stuff running on my old win xp computers.

A mature 9900K might be seeing discounts while the new 3800K might see a bit of early adopter pricing, making them very similarly priced.

On what level is watching a Youtube video, having half a dozen apps open, and surfing with ~150 tabs...on a mobile?
 
I am curious how far it can be taken on good AIO water (ie 360mm rad) or custom water. I admit it will be a little disappointing if 5.0 all core requires LN2 levels of cooling. However, if 4.7+ all core turbo OC can be handled on liquid, with the possibility of higher clocks depending on lesser core use (ie 8 cores to 5.0 etc) I think that will be a solid setup. AMD may not win the 8 core clock race against the expensive 9900KS, but I can't believe it will be THAT deficient in real world gaming, plus have the multi core advantage in most other things.

Those who want to max out an 8c/16t gaming rig with all other top level parts may find Intel to be the fastest, but if the 8 and/or 12 core AMD 3000 series models offer close that kind of performance for much less cost, and the 16 core offers similar plus the core advantage I doubt people will realistically say that Intel simply wins and AMD isn't really competitive, like it used to be back in the early "Core" days. AMD doesn't need to win necessarily, but if they've closed the gap to a tiny amount universally and have some parts that offer better value and/or performance in a wide range of situations, I think many will want to support them.

I'm definitely expecting 4.5-4.7ghz under water on the 3800x without too much effort. If a single core can boost to 4.7 and you have ample cooling, no reason 4.7 should be doable just as with the earlier iterations of Ryzen. 5ghz would be nice but that probably won't be happening until 7nm+.

16 core matisse benchmark for those interested in speculating.. Looks like it beats a 3ghz - 4.4ghz 9980XE clock for clock. The edge on the 9900k will be the difference in OC potential, which I expect to be anywhere between 300-700 mhz (4.5ghz vs 5.2ghz) or 6-15% clocks (subtract a few % for the zen IPC and you have your final difference).

double edit: just double checked toms numbers on a 4.7ghz zen 2 and got 6413, so a 4.7ghz Ryzen 3xxx will best a 5ghz coffee lake CPU in single core.

I was going to skip AM4 for the next Threadripper, but this board officially supporting ECC memory and three PCIe 4.0 at x8 has me rethinking getting a 3950x:

Unfortunately, that board has a Realtek RTL8117 NIC in it. The audio is nothing special either. Lastly, I do not like the fact that the I/O shield isn't integrated.
 
Yeah, one of the asrock ones has 10g and thunderbolt but rumored price is 1k lol
 
It's an LN2 attempt and the only relevance is that by hitting 5.35, daily drivers may get to the high 4GHz region. IPC increases in Zen 2 are definitely relevant as they close or exceed the gap Intel had due to clockspeed in mega fps twitch gaming. Because everyone is a CS pro when it comes to CPU usage, you know?

I think I'm just going to wait for TR4, x499 or whatever they call it assuming it has PCIe4 will probably have a better long term upgrade path too.
 
Confirmed: People have different desktop usage models.

A 4C4T box running MSSQL Server can't do much else. A 6C12T one can game at the same time. But that's just confirming what you said.

I seriously doubt this is the only board that can really push that chip.....dont get me wrong i would love to have it but, dont think i would spend that amount of money when im sure there will be very nice boards for at most half of that.

I'm just going to start on a cheap x470 and a 3800x until prices settle in. I'll grab x570 and a 16 core next year.

That said, you certainly won't have to buy the $599 motherboards to push these CPUs to their limits on ambient. Some of these boards are using 70A TDA21472s.... unless you're planning on running your CPU at 1000 watts, I'm going to go ahead and guess any of the middle of the road 10+2 boards will be able to push ample power through a 3950x.

Aorus Extreme, X570 Godlike, Crosshair VIII, etc are all going to be able to do some serious LN2 overclocking right out of the box... They are seriously over engineered

What makes it so special compared to the Hero you mean? The watercooled VRM. It's literally the same board otherwise but it has the Crosschill EK III waterblock to cool the VRM. I'd much rather have the Aorus Extreme though.
