Microsoft revealed the first details about its next-generation Xbox hardware today, codenamed Project Scarlett...Microsoft is including a custom designed CPU based on AMD’s Zen 2 and Radeon RDNA architecture, and it’s promising this new console will be four times more powerful than the Xbox One X...Microsoft is also using fast GDDR6 RAM, that it claims will “usher in resolution and framerates we’ve never seen before.”

this new Project Scarlett console will support 8K gaming, variable framerates running up to 120fps in games, and ray-tracing...Microsoft is also using an SSD on Project Scarlett...“We’ve created a new generation of SSDs. We’re using the SSD as virtual RAM,” says an Xbox spokesperson in an unveiling video...

to help boost the console's appeal, Microsoft said the device will launch with its next big upcoming space war game, Halo Infinite...the original Halo was released in 2001 alongside the original Xbox, and helped make the device a household name

they need all the help they can get.

sony is utterly devastating them in hardware sales.

I think the next console generation will be much closer than last. MS is doing the right things with their services, gobbling up exclusives (and studios), combining their ecosystems, and are focused on Xbox as a gaming system.

I think Sony is going to repeat their mistakes last time they dominated a generation and take their market for granted. Not having some sort of presence at E3 is, imo, Sony taking their position for granted again.

unless MS builds up a stable of quality exclusives then they're going to lose to Sony once again...MS still doesn't seem to get that games define your hardware and not vice versa...building a super powerful system with no games on it makes no sense...

That's why they're buying studios. Also, MS didn't lose this gen due to a lack of exclusive games. They lost due to several bad decisions from announcement to launch. They lost due to getting cocky. They lost due to not being willing to pay for exclusive content or work with mega publishers like ActiBlizz. Pissing off the community, publishers, and retailers made them lose this generation. Early XB1 MS was like early PS3 Sony. Too cocky and assuming everyone would buy just due to the name alone.

Exactly this. Their Halo, Forza, and Gears of War cycle of exclusives could only last so long before they lost their luster. Then having random, average exclusives here and there by various developers didn’t really add much.

I also have lost interest in Xbox consoles regardless how powerful they are since I also game on PC. As a PC gamer, Microsoft killed off any reason to get their console once they decided to release all their exclusives on PC as well. The PC version is the definitive experience.

I don't see this as Microsoft only thinking about the hardware. The information that has been released leads me to believe that both Xbox 4 and PS5 will be equivalent hardware wise.

which just proves that the games will be the difference...if the hardware is the same then what would make a person choose one over the other- the exclusives

I do hope that this is not boxes ticked for mentioning popular terms which hit home with console users.
If you read it fast you skip things ;)
You actually read 8k gaming 120fps with ray tracing . And that is not what will happen :) .

They didn't say all at once. And they didn't say 8K native. And they didn't say 120 FPS non-interpolated. And they didn't say...

I think price will play a role also.
The SSD is going to cause them to take a loss. I read even at $499 Sony will be losing money. I assume XBOX will be around the same price point. Only Nintendo refuses to lose money on console sales :D

But Microsoft has been gobbling up companies left and right. I think Scoprio will have a ton of exclusive games.

If you believe these consoles will be sold at the $499 price point then I have a bridge to sell you.

The main problem I had is that they used fancy words to disguise basic tech. Basically, those were fancy ways of saying it supports HDMI 2.1.

What I'm afraid of though is that the power still won't be good enough to run @ 4k, yet too many developers will be pushing for 4k. I guess I've grown accustom to 100+ fps on my PC that 60 is hard to go back too. Even console games on the Xbox One X and PS4 Pro which offer either quality or fps are often opaque about this. Run 4k with all the options on, or run 4k @ 60 fps! Well, why can't I run 1080p with all the options on and the speed, and only be slightly worse looking, which won't really be noticeable 12 ft. back from the TV?

iPhone and Samsung S phones have made the "up to $1000" jump. I would say there's nothing stopping consoles from doing the same - especially if either of them still have an optical drive on them (whatever spec that might be).

I was trying to bold the , in the quote but it did not work.
I gave an example where you need to read it exactly I did not state that I did not know what was said ;) .
I just find it pretty bad practise to convey a message which is not exactly structured which avoids confusion.

"Framerates that we've never seen before" "Were looking at framerates of 120fps"

Hate to burst your bubble Microsoft. I've seen those before.

That was my first reaction watching the "reveal."

Trick is that you aren't going to get those FPS on 99.9% of televisions. You're either going to need a PC monitor or one of the rare TV's that supports 120hz. Obviously that will go up between now and next Fall, but the vast majority of people aren't going to see 120fps any time soon...if ever. Besides, they should probably start focusing on hitting 60fps before shooting for 120.

That SSD sounds a lot like Optane... I'm kind of enjoying all of the 'custom this, custom that' silliness.

Overall looks solid if you ignore all of their claims, hopefully they (and Sony) deliver. I'd love to see consoles get back to the load times and responsiveness of game cartridges.

As for the SSD, I just wonder what are the odds they'll have a spare M2 slot for an upgrade? Keep the price down by not having it there initially, but offer an expansion for those who want one.

They lost for all those reasons but ESPECIALLY their firstparty problem. Had they not just crutched on backward compat as a substitute for a firstparty library, they could have still scored some late game touchdowns.

Backwards compat "shit" came a couple years after launch.

Doesn't change what I said and not sure what diff it makes.

While Sony was pumping out a constant stream of exclusives and firstparty titles throughout the life of the PS4, Microsoft was announcing "3 more Xbox360 titles from a decade ago added to backward compat this week!"

Doesn't change what I said and not sure how it's relevant. While Sony was pumping out a constant stream of exclusives and firstparty titles throughout the life of the PS4, Microsoft was announcing "3 more Xbox360 titles from 2006 & 2007 added this week!"

It was about the only option they had at the time. What were they supposed to do, summon games out of thin air? The XB1 was dead on arrival, there was nothing they could do to save it. The better option was to try and get the most money they could from the system and try to set things up for a better next gen. Hence, buying a bunch of studios to have them work on Scarlett titles.

I think the whole 2019 and some 2018 Samsung TV line supports it what is also noteworthy is that they did not say in which resolution.

Select Samsung 2018 TVs will support 120Hz FreeSync and VRR

Samsung confirmed to FlatpanelsHD at a tech seminar in Milan last week that its 2018 “QLED” LCD TVs as well as the mid-range NU8000 will support up to 120 Hz – frames per second – input signals at Full HD resolution, sometimes referred to as “2K120Hz”.
Not to sure where the rest is headed but yeah it can be done.

Xbox software is fully forward compatible with Scarlett. All your peripherals and accessories will also work with Scarlett. Getting started with Scarlett will not require the purchase of anything additional. All Xbox One games including current BW compatible titles from the OG Xbox and Xbox 360 will be playable on Scarlett.

New Xbox Elite controller incoming, too. Lots of little tweaks, but most importantly... a new bumper design. Hopefully that means no more broken bumpers on an otherwise pristine controller. Especially one that costs $175.

I don't know how the elite controller is, but it cost $8 for a kit from amazon with two new bumpers and tools in it to fix my buddy's xbox one controller.

Also, just looked it up. i know it doesn't seems like much, but if you take a controller with you often the charging while in it's case is a nice feature.

*was missing that.
I went umm yeah I guess not on consoles.

The whole design team must be console peasants. The one dude said SSD and Solid State Drive like they were seperate tech. 120fps is faster than they have ever seen. They are actually using some of the SSD for RAM.

"Loading screens are a THING".

Pathetic is the only thing that comes to mind.

He said SoC and Solid State Drive.

I can't wait for Sony's PS5 official launch announcement...hardware will be great but I think they're also going to place a heavy emphasis on the upcoming exclusives...

Squarenix is the reason I would go for one system or the other....
I don't think that the hardware like last generation can make a difference most games won't use that last percentage(s) that the hardware has in one system over the other ...

Why squeenix? You've seen their future, and it's all open-world real-time battles like FFXV, where you're just hitting the shortcut for your forced teammates, because they are dumb. Boring as hell battles, as a result.

Tales Series has a better real-time battle system, and has been around for years. There's a lot better options you could have ripped-off Squeenix.

Dragon Quest :)
At least I think I like that series. Last Tales I played was on Wii :)
