PC Gaming Too Expensive, Switching to Consoles, so long [H]

Thing about "switching to consoles", the honeymoon period is a thing. Once you burn through the exclusives you've missed, it's back to collecting dust, at least in my experience.

The NET cost of pc gaming vs console gaming still is too one sided for me to ever go back to consoles.

You're whining about pointless shit. YOU are the only reason you spent $3000 of funny money on your new PC, when you could get a more basic gaming PC for 1/3 that.

Have fun barely hitting 30fps in most modern console games.

And this is the reason he left and just let people troll him without response. Oh well, guess PCMR folks are full of themselves, glad I am not one of them.

It's almost like this forum has to do with PC gaming or something.

Looks at forum title, says General Gaming, still standing by my point. :D ;) I see nothing wrong with his thread or his point.

The net cost of PC gaming is still much higher than console gaming. The fact is, sales are the same on both sides and free game giveaways only help. :)

No, actually, the sales are only on multi-platform titles...because you can buy them anywhere.

The exclusives electronic copies remain high-priced for 2-3 years.

Remember the Switch sale a month or so back? Yeah, that was for all the Steam ports. The most you'll see off on a 1st-party title on their shop on the first year is ten bucks.

And while you do have much cheaper prices on physical media, it still comes with all the downsides of physical media.

That has not been my experience but, I will take your word for it. I do not own a switch, though.

If that "hasn't been your experience," then perhaps you'd like to point to actual Press Release for a significant sale on *brand new* 1st-party eshop games? Either Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo would suffice.

Something that big would have been carried by major gaming sites, and should be easy for you to find on Google.

I'd be willing to change my tune, if you could provide proof.

Talking about HardForum itself. Essentially a PC Hardware enthusiast website. The nicest response you can expect to get is a "cool story bro".

PC has just as many free game giveaways if not more, with no subscription cost (and you don't have to keep paying a subscription to keep them). Add the fact there is no backwards compatibility for console games, hardware, and software..the cost rises over time. Even brand new games, I can get on pc for around 45 dollars thanks for GreenManGaming VIP deals (Rage 2 for example, I just got that game for 47 dollars with all the preorder bonuses) and humble bundles, which can contain up to 10 games for as low as 15 bucks...and as I stated already, those games are yours forever. They don't go away because of disk read issues, new console releases, unpaid subscriptions, etc.

Probably if you added up everything, in my experience, consoles would seem less expensive by a slight margin...but, of course, I'm buying all the best gear I can get for my PC. PLUS you add how much value I've gotten from PC gaming vs Console gaming, considering I have a high end rig that can play every game available at 1440p 60+ fps (Sorry, don't care what console manufacturers say, 30 fps is not acceptable for gameplay), how many games I have in my steam library that will be playable until the day Valve dies as a company, and the fact I can use my PC for other things than just gaming and streaming...it's completely one sided from my point of view.

I've seen Nintendo first party titles hold their full price value 2 years after release. This is even going back to the wii-u days.

Gamefly.com used games, including first party titles. At least for me, that is what I do, if I want it on disc.

So now, remind me, what's this thread about again?

PC Gaming is not too expensive, else the market would be dead; yet the current gen Titan sells for £3K.

That aint a dead market in my mind!

That's how Nvidia sees it, so how do you? o_O

'SUPER' I guess....

Yes, but we're talking about sales on online stores, not disc.

The only "good, NEW exclusives" on that list are God of War reboot (not really on sale), and The Show 18 ((actually on sale, but yearly sports games don't count, because they drop to 20 within 6 months of release.

The rest of those titles took forever to drop (Horizon took 18 months), or had a terrible launch (Gran Turismo Sport, Bravo Team).

And Shadow of the Colossus is a remaster of the original. Launched at a surprisingly high price of $40. This isn't a deal, it's ten dollars off price the game should have launched at. See here for guidelines for remasters:

https://store.playstation.com/en-us/product/UP1001-CUSA10455_00-BORDERLANDSHD001

This isn't a deal, it's Sony taking out the trash,, and pretending it's something worthwhile. The good games on the list that aren't time-dependent on their value (Horizon, God of War reboot) are both priced how successful console exclusives HAVE BEEN, in my experience: way too high.

Steam sales happen on ALL games, with more than 10 dollars off a game. AND THEY ARE TEMPORARY. not like Sony, where this "sale" is just the way way of publicizing their long-overdue permanent price cuts on overrated games.

Wow, been away too long, the forum has been invaded by couch dwelling console nerds.
I consider the fact that I can dump as much money as I want into my PC to be a huge positive.
I really have never upgraded my PC because I had to...I always wanted to.

and also, on my PC I can do ANYTHING. I have consoles too, and I don't have unlimited money, but the whole gaming thing is a hobby. You learn how to save money here and there.

PCMR is PCMR, I am a member. Sorry.

This is not an attack on the person I'm quoting but....

Let's drop this whole "PC Master Race" nonsense. It sounds retarded and frankly childish.... Like calling someone "gay" in high school.

- I own a computer and it plays games pretty well. The end

Yeah, lets get uptight about everything so we can be even more childish.
FFS.

PCMR has pretty much always been tongue-in-cheek...the whole "GAMERS RISE UP" thing is way more idiotic.

Could stand to stop using the term "retarded", though.

I've been a PC gamer since early 2000s getting hooked on the original Far Cry when my friend gave me his GeForce ti 4400.

In 2008, I bought my first real gaming PC with Phenom 9500 paired with a GTX 275 for $500 CAD. This quickly turned into Phenom II 965 ($150) with GTX 470s in SLI ($600), a couple years later an FX-8350 ($250) w/ GTX 670s in SLI ($850) all the way to my current system build a few years back 6700K ($450) w/ GTX 1070s in SLI ($1,400).

With each build the cost of the PC seems to go up exponentially. My latest computer set me back around $3,000 CAD total not including my 4k monitor and case.

At the time I got into PC gaming, the cost wasn't too much of a barrier but now with the cost of RTX cards and less bang for the buck I'm thinking I may have to reluctantly go back to being a console gamer...

GTX X70s were always great value as they typically equaled the flagship performance of the previous generation or better but now its not even that and again the cost is making it less and less affordable.

Its a shame cause I really love PC gaming, running games in all their graphical glory, the precision of keyboard and mouse... Until prices come back down to reasonable levels (which may be never) I may have to say good bye to this hobby (unless I win the lotto) which gave me so much joy and dust off my consoles.

I will check back to this site here and there and try to stay up-to-date on the latest hardware and news but I won't be on this site as much... It was a great run and thank you to all who helped me along this journey.

PC Gaming will always have a special place in my heart...

So long AMD, Intel and Nvidia...

Hello, my old friend Playstation T_T

It's not really any cheaper tbh. The primary difference is you spend the majority of the price up front on a pc, and you spend the majority of the price over time on a console. Goto the microsoft store and buy games for the xbox one, then compare them to the prices of the same games on pc. It's far cheaper on pc, especially with steam and gog sales. 20 year old games are often still $40+ on the console... You can buy Diablo 3 on the pc for $20 all day, but it's $50 on the xbox...

But I can understand the novelty of the console. Fair disclaimer, I have an Xbox One X I picked up because I only game 1-2 hours a week typically and it's easier for me to do from a lounge chair, especially with my messed up back.

You can play your PC games anywhere using a Steam Link or Nvidia Shield. Just saying, consoles are fine for what you are saying but if you want your PC games where you want your console games, it can be done :D

I don't dispute that PC games are cheaper but you can get decent enough deals on console games if you shop around a bit. A couple months ago I bought a bundle deal, 3 PS4 games for 50€. Obviously those were not brand spanking new AAA games, but slightly older games where the shop wants to get rid of inventory which is fine by me, I'll get my moneys worth out of them.

Well he is not wrong...

He is not getting the same epxreince for cheaper buy going to consle
he is going to a predefined experience he coud lhave gotten the same way on a pc in the same budget

Soo OP complatins about price is solelybased on an orange to apples comparins on his bad choices for his goal

There are games I prefer on console. SF, MK, Persona, lots of them. And the whole PCMR thing is just a joke. I love my PC, it is a hobby. Consoles come and go but the PC gets upgraded and evolves. I love it.
Seriously, does any PC Gamer here really think that PCMR is important or meaningful?

I take a lot of pride in my computer but calling yourself a gamer and then limiting yourself to one platform is like saying you are a foodie but only eat at one restaurant.

PCMR had nothing to do with the argument.

OP bought expensive stuff instead of cheap stuff available
Then complains about the price and decide to buy consoles instead
He could just as well have bought a cheap pc ende up with the same or better experience than going to consoles

Exclusives and personal preferences was not part of the original argument. The original argument was about price

OP is just a stupid as say that he better use a taxi because its cheaper than buying 6 top expensive sports cars to driver around it.
OP could just have bought a simple car and still gotten a cheap car.

PC gaming is only expensive if you have to have the bleeding edge. For a long time now you can get decent mid range components that will pump out good frames at 1080p or even 1440p.
I'm still rocking my 4670k from around 4 or 5 years back. The biggest expense I've had since first putting it together was replacing my gtx 780 with a gtx 1080 ($660 cdn) about a year and half ago. This card should keep me going for another few years unless I absolutely need hardware ray tracing in that time. Some games even handle pretty nice at 4k on my 4k tv.

I do think the RTX series (at least the 2080TI) is way overpriced. But it's not needed for enjoyable gaming.

OP could just have bought a simple car and still gotten a cheap car.

.... So between my sig rig and my camry, there is a method to the madness. Who would've thought heh

I gave my brother all my hand-me-downs recently: Xeon X3470 (@ 3.8Ghz 4c/8t), Gigabyte board, 16GB, RX 570 4GB, and an MX500 ssd.

^ Even that old bird can still take care of BUSINESS.

Point being: If all you're playing at is 1080p, there is almost zero reason to go console these days outside of exclusive titles.

figure an old intel, 980ti @ 1080p is very much possible without breaking any budget. im prety sure it can run just about anything at that res @ max, and i think a 980ti is prety affordable right now. with a good clock it can compete with the gtx1080, and there are alot of cards newer that give around same performance. main grief with PS4/Xbox is periphials, u get aimbot in games cause it's so bad to control :p and the sensitivity is set to acomodate the fps the ps4 output so u wont feel how slow it is. but yeah RTX is extremely bad for price/performance wise for prety much alpha/beta stage features, and few games that do exsist only use one out of alot of ray tracing techniques and it is a soulcrushing load on the gpu. bfv: reflections tombraider: shadows metro: lighting, i imagine if they combined all of the the gpu would go up in smoke. i game at 1440p and i can see this pc lasting 5 years easy, if it was 1080p i reckon i would be in same performance range as 1080ti +-my cpu is already close. it was released 5 years tho, today a cpu can easily go 5 years. graphics cards it kinda vary i will say but i think consoles made it more balanced overall. there was a time in pc it was normal to constantly push everything and components hardly had lifetime. pc is premium over consoles, and it's nothing it cant do! but i guess money dont grow on trees either, and new ps5 is probs are prety good piece of hardware, impressive what the can squeze out of that thing lol.

PC hardware is expensive now for the latest and greatest. However buying last generation hardware is pretty cheap, just look at the sales on the 1st Gen Ryzen stuff now some of it is half price or less. Plus there is tons of used graphics cards floating around, not to mention loads of cool indie games that will run on a potato.

The reality is, you can spend an almost unlimited amount of money on console or PC gaming. You can spend a fortune on displays and sound systems for either which make the cost of the console or even the PC into the smallest fraction of such a project. Granted, a quality PC is far more expensive than a console. However, you don't have to go towards the ultra high end to buy a PC capable of gaming at resolutions and or frame rates that consoles simply can't do right now.

Not to mention, choosing pc gaming > consoles wasn't really about having the most cost effective option for gaming, it was about having the best experience and options for gaming. Consoles for the longest were THE cost effective option that allowed gamers to play without shelling out the money for a PC....PC just ended up being cheaper in the long run due to console manufacturers nickle and dime-ing everything in the fucking world, and being a completely "walled off" experience.

PC gives you options: Don't like a controller? Don't have to play with one. Hell you can play with a fucking guitar hero controller if you want. Games die on consoles over time.....you can almost always bet that even if a publisher kills online services for a game, some PC gamers will find a way to keep playing. Not to even mention the fact you play on PC you are more likely to get a more mature age group than fucking 12 year olds screaming racist obscenities in a voice chat.

You think games on console die? Lol, say that to my big box of fully working Atari 2600 games.... Say that to all the PC games I bought on Impulse for PC that can't be downloaded anymore. Say that to my PC version of GTAIV that can't be activated anymore because I installed it too many times and was locked out. Sheesh, kids these days.

I guess that depends on how often and how much time you game. While I was working and going to school full time, Sony's exclusives pretty much kept me satiated for 2-3 years. Horizon: Zero Dawn alone kept me hooked for over half of 2017. But there was a couple other cross-platform games that were free with PSN+ that I played occasionally as well, which I would have preferred to play them on console anyways because of the genre they were.

No, actually, the sales are only on multi-platform titles...because you can buy them anywhere.

The exclusives electronic copies remain high-priced for 2-3 years.

Definitely seems to be more the case on Switch than on the PS4. Spiderman and God of War were just $20 on PSN, only a year after GoW launched and maybe 9 months since Spiderman launched, both very well received games as well. Horizon: Zero Dawn from 2 years ago was $10 for the complete edition, and all of the Uncharted games 1-4 and Lost Legacy were $10 or less. Pretty much the only exclusive on there that was more than $30 was Days Gone at $40 I think and it just came out a couple months ago, albeit with somewhat mediocre reviews.

But Switch just had an E3 sale too on the eShop where multiple 1st party exclusives (Mario Odyssey, Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze, Mark Kart, Mario Party, Mario Tennis, etc.) were $40 ($20 off), which I jumped on a couple of those as well. But I think back in April there were some that were half off like Mario Maker and Super Mario Bros U Deluxe too. So while they're more rare on Switch, the sales are definitely there occasionally.

I just built a new gaming rig too (2700x / RTX 2080, 32 GB RAM, 34" Alienware 1440p curved UW monitor), so I like to game on all platforms still, but I mostly stick to FPSs and maybe some racing on PCs, then third person action/adventure games on consoles.

DRM and dead gaming clients are rather irrelevant, you can still find those games. I still have box copies of my floppy disk games that still work with DOSBOX. Doom, Incredible machine, Civ, Ultima 4, Kings quest...all working fine, and the beautiful thing is, I can still find these games online today and download them to play on my PC. You can get around lost CD Keys or find manuals online for those games that had DRM part of their game mechanics (Such as in Jouneyman Project, where you had to enter in a code to even get in the temporal agency, defined in the booklet)

Just picked this one up the other day, pretty stoked to play it again.

And I hate to say it, I have zero desire to relive the Atari age of gaming. Most of the games were just the shitty version of their MAME (arcade) counterparts anyway.

Well said. Both sides of the coin provide equally impressive and fantastic experiences, and it's proportionate to the resources you dump into it. Honestly, I can't believe this thread is still alive. Limiting yourself to one side is limiting yourself to certain game experiences. For me? No thanks, I'll play what looks good regardless of what platform it's on.
