Windows 10 1903 Unleashed to Public

So tried it again today to get screenshots. It did something different than before - ok. I didn't SS everything, but summary below. I did make sure no USB drives were installed, but this computer does have 2 SATA drives, so that's a possibility.

First it shows Everything OK
Downloading 0-100%
Download Verification 0-100%
Updating Windows 0-100%
Ready to Install Win10? Continue from left off, start over? (I selected Continue this go through)
Making Sure your ready to install...
Downloading Updates 0-100%
Installing Win10 (blue screen) 0-100%
Windows needs to Reboot (30min timer on screen, first I've seen this)
Update and Restart
Hangs on Win Logo on reboot - hit the reset button.
"We couldn't install Win 10" - error shown below

Maybe a reboot or an update or something hit that let it go through the original mesage, but it still failed. A third PC here in the office updated last night with no issues.

Supposedly the error code is driver related - may be the GTX660 in this computer that's pretty old... or the fact that it's a x58 motherboard. You'd think it would flag up front before it goes through nearly an hour of various status bars, downloads, and updates. I'm not running any third party drivers though, even the GPU is running MS's driver right now (the 660 was just a video card I had laying around to get this old computer back up and running, it does office stuff now)

Do you have another, newer video card you could install to test?

Not handy - most of our office PCs are just running integrated graphics. This computer was salvaged from one of my older gaming rigs so I could run some simulation software on it, and it just has some leftover parts I donated to the cause. The x58 I have doesn't support integrated graphics, so I'm kind of up the creek there.

So, is it just me, or did they remove the ability to disable web results in windows search?

I can't find the option anywhere and it is really pissing me off. I don't want Windows doing anything web related without me explicitly initializing it. When I go to search the star menu, I don't want related results from the web

There's a couple group policy settings under Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Search which are
"Do not allow web search" and "Don't search the web or display web results in Search". (Pro version)
I remember they used to work but I don't remember when they stopped working. I'm just wondering if Microsoft is intentionally ignoring those settings or if it's a bug. I was waiting to see if 1903 was going to fix it.

There's also a setting to disable the preview pane which I hate and didn't have before. That also gets ignored probably because you can't disable the web searches because they show up in it.

Upgraded last night and so far I've got no issues. I'm liking the dark theme option I can set, glad they finally added it.

Somebody didn't update the chipset driver signatures in the build. This can't be AGESA related, different level. Buggy build.

Well thats would show my exact same result there!

Let us not forget a very likely solution for most: Had that exact same problem -- bypassed it by uninstalling BattleEye anti-cheat and things went smoothly on my 1500x/B350 system. This exact solution worked for 2 people in the comments section, and there were only maybe a dozen comments. Good old anti cheat software to the rescue!

Edit: Oh, and I do not have any of that anti cheat crap on all 4 of my computers.

i think part of the problem is were using brand new bios and chipset drivers on Our Asus Crosshair VII and that somehow is an issue for this build? IT cant be a coincidence were using the same boards

That was the one without the problem.

I have the latest bios and chip set drivers installed for my Crosshair VII and had no issues with installing 1903, and no problem since. I also have multiple games installed that use Battleye and have no issues.

Update went fine for me once I removed battle-eye on my X470 system.

FYI - The task manager reported memory speed rate now shows normal frequency, not the effective data rate as before.

ok so much for speed reading it.....but it still seems ryzen related possibly? idk these days i have to do clean installs for every single new build since i built a ryzen setup....maybe just a coincidence

I would be investigating a software conflict over hardware. I haven't had to do a clean install yet since I built this computer last April. If it is hardware related, It isn't being caused by your Ryzen CPU unless it is defective.

Nothing hardware defective here...no crashes, no errors of any kind. I can show a list of installed software cause it shouldn't be much.

So tell me what software is causing the problem? Ill destroy it lol

Seems like all this stopped working with 1809.

I wonder if I could just hide all the nonsense using Classicshell...

disable anything that runs in the background, ie ai suite, process lasso, winaero tweaker etc etc.
ill give it a try....pretty easy to test out but im thinking its has something to do with my hardware setup...like if i unplugged all but the os drive it might work as we do with clean installs.

You have to manually remove the battle eye service if it's installed. It won't show in add/remove programs. It'll be under services. If the service is present, even if it's disabled, it'll cause the install to fail.

Not true, I have 2 BE games installed and upgraded to 1903 just fine.

I'm on Windows Preview so already had it. Didn't have any issues upgrading. Then again, I never had an issue with any of the Windows releases or updates dating back to Windows 3.11. Guess I don't use enough proprietary software.

When it's possible I recommend a Clean Install of any new Windows 10. I downloaded the Win 10 May iso, created the media and clean installed with no issues.

all hard drives and usb drives unplugged (except for the os drive), all apps disabled, then reboot ill be pissed if it doesn't work this time!

Ok that worked!:)

I hope we get some Nvidia drivers in the next week or so and I hope they work seamlessly. I don't care about drops in FPS in games like that matters in the first place. I just want my Windows control panel back wonder why they never upgraded coding is probably a mess. Someone said the control panel U I is from Windows XP. At the first install everything was working good after a few shutdowns and reboots it started going wonky.

Yeah, windows 10 is easier and quicker to install than previous versions in some regards (the driver database helps, so awesome to not have to hunt for myseltery drivers for mystery devices with warning triangles in the device manager anymore) but much worse in others, where you have to go through and take care of all the privacy and other idiotic Microsoft settings to get rid of as many of the junk borderline malware features as possible.

In the end, I find that a Windows 10 install takes about as much time as a Windows 7 I stall used to, just spent in different places. It's still a 2-3 night project, 2-3 hours a night, to get everything installed and set up the way I like it.

Linux Mint on the other hand, starting with the install media, I have a installed functioning OS in mostly OK shape in 10 minutes. Add another 5-10 minutes to configure a few pieces of software and we are done.

I think it's really hilarious to hear some people consider Linux the more difficult and user unfriendly option. That very definitely was the case in the 90's, but doesn't reflect my experience at all today.

I definitely agree on Mint Linux. I put it on a system for a friend (had XP on his machine) and everything just worked. Granted, he only does emails and watches the occasional youtube video.

I dual boot my main machine with Devuan Linux. Linux for all the normal computing/programming needs and Windows 10 for gaming and the occasional Photoshop session. I use Devuan instead of Mint because I'm philosophically opposed to the system d octopus.

Im leaning on the idea it was removing all other drives connected to the setup that was the fix in my case.....but i didnt see it as a bad idea to disable as many startup apps as possible. Seems like i remember reading things related to this build regarding hard drives. (as in it would abort if certain conditions existed, like having a flash drive plugged in) but idk it was a while back and i was super busy with work

For what its worth my HP ryzen laptop upgraded on the first try

I'm reading elsewhere that another thing that can prevent install is a bug in some older versions of AMD Ryzen RAID drivers. Upgrading to the latest version of the drivers reportedly fixes this issue.

I was reading the same. So I'm never going to install the RAID drivers. It seems that you will never see the upgrade if you lack the RAID drivers on your system.

Maybe in a year after everyone is finished losing all of their files; I will install them.

I'm not a strong believer of chipset based software RAID, so I usually just don't install them. If I'm going to RAID something, I'll probably just use ZFS (which precludes Windows unless it is a VM) or a server SAS hardware RAID card.

I am wondering if that issue is related to CSM. I do not have CSM enabled on any of my computers and have not run into this issue at all. I even did a Sata to M.2 clone and a M.2 to M.2 clone on my Taichi X370 board.

I hear you.

I don't like System D, Netplan and any number of new Linux features.

Sadly Upstart is a dead unsupported project, and I am unwilling to go back to SysInit.

It's your setup, I get NVCP working just fine.

SuperFetch (now known as SysMain) seems to be going nuts with this release. It spikes my CPU and my entire system slows to a crawl. Audio slows down, my cursor stutters, etc... I've disabled it in services, hoping it resolves this. Just sharing in case anybody else experiences something similar.
