Title might be misleading; I need some advice on options to upgrade. While this system works really well for me, lately I've been doing a lot of video work and would like something that can render video faster. I don't want the best system possible; I'll settle for noticeable improvement for little money.

This is my current system:

I was thinking of upgrading the processor and, with that, I'll likely need another mother board. The third thing I wanted to look into was getting more/better RAM. I think I can go with my 1070 for another year or so before I look into upgrading that.

So, looking for suggestions on processor+mobo combo that I can use to continue to play games, but also render video faster than I currently can.

I have a feeling I'm going to get some Ryzen suggestions, and I'm willing to switch if there's significant improvement to be had for less money than sticking with Intel.

Thanks!!

I would wait until the Ryzen 3000 series CPU's drop. You won't have to wait too much longer. Even if you don't end up going for one, you'll find prices drop on the older CPU's. There will be opportunity to buy motherboard and CPU combinations via the FS/FT forums as well.

So these Ryzen processors are that much better than the Intel stuff?

Which 3K Ryzen should I be looking at? 3700X?

I couldn't really tell you. I don't have pricing information or CPU's in hand. We don't really know how the 3000 series will perform in the real world. We've got some leaked information, but it hasn't been verified. So I'd wait and see.

Also strongly recommend go for dual channel memory - 2*8 instead of 1x16, especially if considering ryzen.

Good catch. I didn't see that. Ryzen likes memory bandwidth, but it also likes low latency memory.

Thanks, guys! Will look into it. Are there any preferred memory sticks that Ryzen likes? Looking to get anywhere between 16 GB and 32 GB.

The G.Skill FlareX stuff has worked better and more consistently than anything else I've tried on Ryzen systems. This includes Threadripper. That said, my Threadripper works well with a lot of different modules with the most up to date AGESA code. I've used Corsair Vengeance LPX modules and some Patriot Viper Elite DDR4 3000MHz modules with it since putting it in my own machine.

I've been doing some reading and there is a lot of discussion about single-core vs multi-core performance. Is there a rule of the thumb regarding when you should prioritize one or the other? I haven't been able to find a list that says "if you're into this, then intel is what you need. if you're into that, you're better off with ryzen".

Also wondering if this even matters at all for my use case.
