I'm just looking for some input if you guys think it's worth the jump.

I'm currently running my 4670k at a modest overclock at 4ghz. I game at 1080p@144hz with a GTX 1080 so I imagine I would benefit from a beefier cpu to pump out a few more fps at that refresh rate.

I don't have any complaints with my setup but would like like to get the most out of it if there's an upgrade path worth following. I know more modern titles are starting to benefit more from extra threads. I'm currently playing Monster Hunter World which is a fairly taxing game.

I'm likely not going to do a full ram/motherboard/cpu overhaul for at least a couple years. Do you think a 4790k would be a worth while boost?

I'm hoping to only spend between $150 - $200 cdn based off what I can see on ebay.

I would say it's not worth the cost. Try to push your OC to 4.5. Get a better cooler if needed. That will provide more results than the switch.

Delid and get some tasty liquid metal on that cpu die.

Then overclock to 4.5GHz or more.

Thanks for the feedback. I currently see a bid for one at $79 cdn. If that doesn't go up any higher in the next few days I might bite.
If it does go up, I'll probably keep what I've got and save my money.

if it just $79 cdn then go for it, it Will be worth just in game smoothness and frame stability.. as you know modern games crush any 4c/4t CPU but still are aceptable for 4c/8t ones even at the same generation.. minimums FPS Will boost and frame stability Will be better overall it's a better experience, I tested that endless times with my old 3770K and 6700K. disabling HT was a noticeable downgrade in performance and game smoothness.

4790k is probably still going to go for well over $79 CDN. I'd expect it to go at least twice that.

Also, the difference with HT is going to be extremely minuscule (and possibly better performance with it off) in a great deal of games. It's important to know WHAT games we're talking about. I would check around youtube for actual HT on vs HT off benchmarks on the games you play, I don't think Monster Hunter is going to get much more FPS if any.

I would get an AIO if you don't already have one and crank that 4670k to 4.5-4.7ghz, then start putting money away for a new system where you can reuse the AIO.

Just my two cents, I've been on a 4790k @ 4.7ghz since 2014 and it's at the point where CPUs like the 9700k/9900K are putting out WAY higher frames, so I'm putting away for either a 9900K or Ryzen 3xxx now.

edit: I would like to see some benchmarks of games that are showing significant benefits at 4c/8t vs 4c/4t. I haven't been playing too many new games so I'm out of the loop.

Yeah, most of the listings are at the $150 and up range, closer to $300 for the "buy it now" options. I'm just crossing my fingers that $79 listing doesn't go up any higher as it's the best deal I've seen so far. It still has about 4 days left on the bid so we'll see what happens. If I can score one for under $100 I'll definitely snag one.

I am tempted to get a new cooler regardless. I put an evo 212 on my noisy amd 8350 rig and it runs nice and cool now. My 4670k currently idles at around 50 and hits 70 at load.

As far as what I play. It's kind of all over the place. Monster Hunter is the only game I'm currently focused on. Recently I was juggling FFXIV, Forza Horizon 4 (it runs well but hammers my cpu at 100%) and Far Cry 5.
I'll check out some hyperthreading vs no-hyperthreading benchmarks to see what I find. Good idea. I've done a bit of googling and searching on Youtube to compare both CPUs and so far I've only found mixed opinions.
