Upgrade to single new card or buy another 770

Ok, I just built a new PC, And during that build guess 1 of my gtx 770's took a sh*t. B/c I get error code 0d when I have just it installed, but with other 770 boots normal.

So.my question is do I buy another used 770 to keep my sli config? Or do I buy a used newer single card?

I do alot of gaming, and ofc burn stuff ,.movies, shows etc etc
 
Definitely new.. and I don't say that just because of the age, as I am also running a card from that generation as well. But it's time to get something new, especially when you'll find a second 770 for the same price used as cards much newer and faster.
 
You don't really even have to buy new. A used Pascal card (1070Ti or something like that) can be had for $250 and probably run circles around 770 SLI. I was looking for benchmarks or a comparison video but couldn't find one quickly.



Looks like 770 SLI (4GB) is somewhere between a 1060 and 1070...assuming you get good SLI support.
 
Like the above said it's not worth buying a second gtx 770. A gtx 770 is about as fast as a gtx 1050 ti.
 
I agree with the others that something like a 1070 would be a better overall value.

With that out of the way, if you just want to be back up and running, I can understand the case for finding another used 770, and you'd probably spend less money this way.

So, it depends on your budget. If you've only got $100 to burn, I say find another 770, if you were happy with them before. If you can stomach the cost, upgrade to something more recent. Your power supply will appreciate it.

huge upgrade, however as other have said, it would be just better to go with something newer and faster, the above suggestion of 1070/1070ti would be amazing.. and Will hold better as wont be as limited as the 980 due vRAM.
 
Im not running 4k or anything like that.. just a samsung monitor 2080x1860 i think.. im not at home right now to know exactly.. But i do know that its like a 24" .. was just think 4gb 980 would be enough.. but if i can get a 1070 for close to same price ofc ill go with a 1070... would a 1050 or 1060 work ? TI version of either of them
 
4GB it's a current limitation even at 1080P. I have a 970 and a 980 on two secondary machines and there are a LOT of games where the 4GB framebuffer represent from minor issues with stuttering to major where crash are involved. 4GB it's a limitation for most major games released in the last two or three years, that's why we do not recommend going with a 4GB at this age.
 
but the issue is the prices... wife will kill me if i spend another 200 on top of the 300$ ive already spent
 
I ran 3x GTX680 SLI (680 and 770 are basically the same) until recently and it really wasn't that bad, but the writing is on the wall when it comes to SLI as support shifts from the driver level (DX11) to the game level (DX12). It probably won't be that bad for any existing games that you want to keep playing but for new games, it will really be hit or miss as to if they will even support SLI at all and those are going to be the games where you will need SLI the most. Not to mention that you will miss out on DX12 benefits in most cases. Technically the 770 should be able to do DX12, but only at feature level 11_0. Not all games allow DX12 usage at those lower feature levels (most currently don't).

One card you might look into is a used GTX980ti. I've seen some great deals lately. Nvidia sort of abandoned it a bit and threw it's owners under the bus, as it even though it has full DirectX 12.1 support, 6GB VRam, and performs better than a 1070, Nvidia held back software raytracing support from these cards for some reason (to try to get users to upgrade I assume). As long as you don't care about raytracing support, they are still fantastic cards.

Agreed. Would look and see if I can get a good deal on a 980ti or 1070. 770 is just not good enough esp. if SLI does not work with a particular game.

From what I've researched on htx 770 sli beats 980, 980 ti. I know less heat and less power consumption. But raw performance seems the sli wins.. could be wrong tho.
 
Single card all day long. I've tried SLI a few times (780s, 980s and last was Titan Xps) and the scaling is just never really good enough in the apps that I run to justify the heat / power wasted to drive it. I've since hopped back to a single Titan Xp then Radeon VII and now 2080ti and I don't think I'll ever waste my time / PCIE lanes / space / energy on SLI ever again.

nope. even on olver games with amazing multiGPU scaling you will be at best barely performing better than GTX 980 performance with 770SLI, in games where SLI doesn't work (most games recently) the 980 Will be a helluva of upgrade over GTX 770 specially going with an aftermarket cooled Factory OC'd model without take in consideration how choppy SLI has been lately.. 980Ti Will simply destroy 770SLI in every aspect…

about GPU to pick. AMD RX 580 it's a great choice… it's about GTX 980 levels of performance and sometimes better.. gtx 570 for SLI simply doesn't worth.. I think only borderlands and metro 2033/last light had GPU accelerated physX? also nvidia blocked that kind of configuration, you have to use customized drivers and registry edits to be able to do that kind of AMD/Nvidia mixes..
 
I've always heard that with single gpu vs comparable multi gpu setups is that the single gpu tends to always have higher minimum frames. So in parts of gameplay where things get a little hectic, your single gpu setup should hold a higher framerate. Those drops or hitches will standout more than the higher possible maximum frames.
Bad frame times and microstutters are also more common in multi gpu setups.

I vote single GPU all the way.

I jumped from a 780 to a 1080 and the jump felt huge. I'm sure that card will serve you well.
