Epic Games Store

God damnit. I didn't want to believe it. Tried to karate chop my keyboard but it lacked conviction

We reserve the right to deny requests for keys or revoke key requesting privileges for partners that are abusing them or disadvantaging Steam customers.

Occasionally it may make sense to offer your game in a bundle or subscription, timed at the right point in a game's life cycle. Keep in mind that the perceived price in the bundle/subscription should be a price you are willing to run the game at a standalone price or discount on Steam. Philosophically, you can think about it like any other discount: if you’re making an aggressive offer in one place, make it elsewhere too. We want to avoid a situation where customers get a worse offer on the Steam store, so feel free to reach out to us via the Developer Support tool if you want to talk through a specific scenario.

Please note that Steam keys cannot be sold on other sites unless the product is also available for purchase on Steam at no higher a price than is offered on any other service or website.

woiuld be awesome if tomorrow valve was like "As of today, we only keep 11%"
Valve doesn't need to because their fee is an expression of their marketsize (sales volume potential - and exponentially bigger than the diff between each store's fees, nevermind EGS's hidden fees like transaction cost which they pass on. Steam doesn't).

And besides if Valve did change their fee, Tim would just move the goalposts. He's not an honorable guy by any metric. The whole fee percentage thing is a distraction job to keep the conversation away from Epic's business practices.

So you think EGS should be forced to wait 10 years to be competitive with Steam?

This argument is a little flat because Epic doesn't have to reinvent the wheel. Valve already did the heavy lifting and pioneered the platform, made mistakes, and innovated to become a product most people use/want. Now everyone else has the luxury of copying their homework. They wouldn't be market leader if they didn't. Epic has 15+ years of examples to work with and they chose to be lazy.

No one rational that recognizes the anti-competition in Epic taking games for ransom is suggesting Steam exclusivity as the alternative - it's not either/or. They could easily put a Borderlands 3 on GOG, GMG, Origin, Discord, or a DRM-free version from their own website. Literally any other option would be better than EGS in it's current state.

Precisely.

Valve's fee percentage is a fact of this matter, not bullshit. If Valve lowered their percentage then it would no longer be a factor, sure, but to suggest that it doesn't currently matter is just disingenuous spin. Of course such a huge cut of sales is going to matter. If you reversed the order and EGS was first with their 12% cut, and then Steam came out offering additional store features for a 30% cut the devs would appear to be completely crazy to even consider doing business on Steam.

steam contract does not allow for games to be sold cheaper on other store sites.

I get an error code at that link. In any case, your original statement was "steam contract does not allow for games to be sold cheaper on other store sites" -- except what you quoted specifically pertains to the resale of Steam Keys. It's also not a blanket rule. (btw, there is no such thing as a "Steam Contract").

In other words some people are trying to twist it that "If you sell a game on Steam you can't offer it for cheaper on another store", which isn't true. There are thousands of games for sale on Steam that are simultaneously for sale cheaper at other stores.

What they're trying to say is that you can't sell a game cheaper on a competing client (Origin, EGS). I have no idea if that is true. Origin does sell some semi recent games like Tomb Raider and Batman Arkham Asylum/City but they tend to be priced the same or higher than Steam. Newer entries in these series tend not to be on Origin. Is that a result of a licensing agreement with Valve? I have no idea.

Would be interesting if someone could verify but I assume even if it was true it would be under an NDA.

they will have a ToS somewhere, good luck finding it. You can try to make the case this only applies to steam keys but a relevant sections mentions denying/blocking key requests for "disadvantaging Steam customers". Charging steam customers more can certainly be seen as a disadvantage. Which pretty much means they can do anything they want in that regard. Whether they enforce it or not is unknown but even for steam keys there is a lot of language about keeping prices the same.

I'm pretty sure I saw something directly from steam's seller FAQ posted here earlier that said you can't sell the game for cheaper and if you're selling it bundled with other things you need to be careful.

It'd be stupid for them not to have a policy like that. They aren't going to give a game free advertising then lose out on all the sales.

Epic Games Store Update
5.1.2019

We want to thank gamers, developers, and publishers for making April the biggest month so far for the Epic Games store!

Saber Interactive’s World War Z has sold over 320,000 copies on the Epic Games store so far, with 250,000 in its first week.

Satisfactory launched in Early Access a little over a month ago. Early projections of its popularity were slightly underestimated: this has been Coffee Stain’s best PC launch ever!

Anno 1800 from Ubisoft, and Metro: Exodus from 4A Games, had the best PC launches in their respective franchise’s history. Congratulations to Metro: Exodus for leading the way as the top-grossing Epic Games store title.

We also have a delay to announce. A month ago we published the Epic Games store roadmap to share our release plans for new store features. We’ve shifted features targeted for April to May and June as development efforts have focused on supporting online features required for new game launches. Be on the lookout for future updates and regularly check out the “Recently Shipped” section of the Trello Board to keep tabs on our progress.

The partnership between Humble Bundle and Epic that was announced at GDC is now bearing fruit. Today you can buy Metro Exodus and Dangerous Driving, and pre-purchase Borderlands 3 at the Humble Store; more games are coming! https://www.humblebundle.com/store.

Since launch, the Epic Games store has offered a new free game every two weeks, leading to more than 25 million free game installs so far. We’re humbled by the overwhelming response and we will continue to support developers and publishers in releasing awesome games for free throughout 2019.

We at Epic Games are grateful for the support of all gamers, developers, and publishers for using the Epic Games store and for placing trust in Epic as we build a new ecosystem for PC gaming.

I wonder if they'll offer developers the same cuts on their Android store and how Google will react. It's going to be a lot harder to bust that monopoly.

I'm always wary of big round numbers.

Sounds like the perfectly even "250,000 copies first week" were the guaranteed sales paid for by Epic's bribe check to the developer. Like a kid with a lemonade stand and his mom buys most of the lemonade.

I've literally never seen exact sale numbers for just about anything. Typically it is "we sold 1 million units" or "20 million units shipped to retailers". Never see anything like 1,202,312 copies sold. :p

Though what you posted didn't make much sense. If the minimum was 250,000 they already passed it so they're not getting anything extra they wouldn't have received normally. It is only an advantage if you flop and sell lower than that, say selling 200,000 instead of 250,000. Looks about right for this game. No name developer, not a popular IP and little advertisement. Probably sold 1 million copies on the consoles. Seems about right for a launch of this scope of game. Sounds like L4D but in 3rd person and 3rd person shooters suck, so meh.

I wonder if Epic is going to have sales like Steam I'm not sure if they had any the client only started to horde games over the past year.

not necessarily, Metro Steam preorders were fullfilled on steam so there is a chance that they will get steam keys, maybe with a bit of uproar to help the cause.

they have a landing page but no preorder page. I can guarantee steam is not going to give out codes under this circumstance.

They are, starting today actually. Most things are discounted by a percentage, and in addition Epic is giving $10 off every game over $15.

I expect all the people bitching because games should cost less on EGS will now be putting in their BL3 pre-orders.... right? :ROFLMAO:

Damn Borderlands 2 is 10.00 off people going to be pissed lol game isn't even out.
Ashen and Metro Exodus are the only games I want Outer Worlds isn't on sale yet not sure of Control.
The Division 2 is 47.99 on Uplay

Sounds like EGS is even giving past preorders $10 back as a credit.

I understand why EGS is causing the drama that it has, but I really want to hear peoples excuses now. For the next month, BL3 (and others) is cheaper, just like they've said it should be. EGS is hosting a sale that, their small library aside, is arguably better than any Steam sale has been in a very long time. And as wel know, you can buy their games on GMG and Humble now. There goes the "they are a monopoly (LOL) and will never have sales and you'll never be able to get games anywhere else" argument. They are addressing a lot of the concerns people have. What are we going to get mad about now?

---cut paste----

I pre-purchased a game before the start of the Epic Mega Sale and that game hasn’t launched yet. Should I cancel my pre-purchase and then buy it again to take advantage of the $10 discount?
No, you don’t have to! Every player who pre-purchased an unreleased game in the Epic Games store prior to May 16th, 2019 for $14.99 and above will receive a $10 refund! You will receive your $10 refund automatically to the payment method you used in the next 7-12 days.

HOLY SHIT
That is an AWESOME SALE

reminiscent of the way steam used to be

Picked up
Ashen - 19.95
Outward - 21.99

All the preorder stuff is also on sale ($10 off), makes you go hmmmm

And as wel know, you can buy their games on GMG and Humble now. There goes the "they are a monopoly (LOL) and will never have sales and you'll never be able to get games anywhere else" argument.

So you can buy BL3 and Metro Exodus elsewhere now? And all of the other timed exclusives?

Like I said, you can buy them on GMG and Humble now. They are obviously still Epic keys.... which was never a problem when games were only a Steam key regardless of where you bought it, so people should be used to this

The Epic store must have some bugs with the search type in The Division 2 and nothing is found.

Supposedly Ubisoft delist games cause Epic put this sale up without letting publishers know. Other developers are pissed over this sale.

Not true. I found both division 2 and anno for sale on egs via Google, with the $10 discount.

The only games that I heard were removed were vampires 2 and something else I cannot remember.

Not sure why any publisher would be upset about it, epic is literally coving the $10 discount. There games have been made more attractive for purchase at no cost to them.

EGS is just a front for Epic to undermine the PC games industry, and move everyone back to consoles where they like them. :p

<I'm partially joking...>

its all made up bullshit. people don't like epic so they are brigading, bitching about sales where epic is essentially giving you money to reduce the cost of games.
They could have done a better job communicating with the developers but still.

I don't understand why pubs are getting upset about this. GMG has been discounting pre-orders for years, and by a lot more than $10.

I would think that that is because there is an agreement between the pub and GMG which does not seem to be the case here. Also I do not know how much games a store like GMG sells.

Also a lot of people seem to wait until games are below a certain treshold b4 they buy like below 25, 20 or even 10$.

It's not what they are doing. It is the context. People don't like epic for good reason. They didn't arbitrarily decide they are not going to like them. Epic well earned their hatred.
