Honest opinion, AMD or Intel for CPU?

I am starting a new build, and wanted to know everyones thoughts? I do some gaming, but not real hard core. I have a $2k budget, and I already have a Dell 34" Ultrawide monitor. I know it's not 144hz, but I like clarity. I've always had Intels, and like 15 years ago had AMD.

The last Intel I had before I sold that rig was a i9-9900k, that failed on me within 2 weeks. People believe it was due to the Asus motherboards causing them to fail as I was one of many that failed on Reddit. Probably won't use Asus again and go Gigabyte this time for the board.

Thoughts? I want the best speed I can, to help with rendering videos, etc.
 
It's a minefield.

The 2700x (and presumably new ryzen) needs a fair bit of driver/software support which is still a bit janky imo

The boards for the intel 9xxx series are generally pretty sucky. You have to pay for the privilege of having a high end motherboard to have decent enough VRMs to support those chips. Blame intel, they pumped out a product that needs a lot of power (130-160W). I rate Gigabyte's Aorus range.

I bought an i7-9700k, then upgraded the motherboard shortly after cause I have zero confidence in asus motherboards.

My advice is wait till the 25th, then buy a 9900k, fit it to a top end gigabyte board and be done with it.

I’ve been running a 2700x since launch with a x470 board. I’ve never ran into any “janky” software or driver issues.

Came from a 8700k, and exclusively used intel cpu’s Since the AthlonXP days. I’ve been extremely happy with it.

I’ll also be a day one Ryzen 3xxx user.
If you can use the extra cores, these things are an amazing value. And even if you game, it’s still a great choice
 
The cheapest thing if you are looking at AMD is to buy a X470 motherboard buy a cheap zen+ cpu and replace with a Ryzen 3000 go for 3200 CL14 ram (samsung B die).

Not ideal but if you wanted something now that is the way to do it. Replacing the cpu in the end should not be a problem the only thing you want to verify on the motherboard are the cpu leads (+8 pin or both +8 +4) and the VRM. Double check the ram.

Then the best you can do is buy the 12 core version of Ryzen 3000 . If you want more cores then that requires a new motherboard (X570). And would make all of the afore mentioned things moot.
 
At this point, it makes sense to wait and see what Zen2 has up its sleeve. I don't know that I'd recommend a new 2nd gen board at this point when the new boards are right around the corner. Yes, the upgrade will cost somewhat more compared to the current boards, but you'll be more likely compatible right out of the box and gain whatever features AMD is planning.

Sorry to hear about your Intel setup. I had a couple GB boards in Z370/Z390 flavor and they worked fine.
