I built a super cheap build just to have a computer...ASUS B250M-A, Celeron G4930, 8GB Patriot DDR4-2400, Corsair CS650M.

Simple HTCP build, used for web browsing, eBay listings, etc. But I’m still not satisfied with the Celeron...slow in basic tasks on Windows 10.

What should I move to for under $150, preferably $100-$120. i3 8100 won’t work in my board..i3 6100, i5 6400? What’s the bang for my buck here?

I would think the best thing you can get used for what you want to pay. I wouldn't personally buy new for a platform that old, you always pay to much. Look around in the for sale section or ebay or wherever you buy used parts. The i5 would be nice if you can score it for a decent price. I would think it would be doable in your 100-120 range

An i3 might not be that big of an upgrade.

Are you ok going to a Ryzen?

You could get a R3 1200 and a B450 Mb for about 140. Cheaper if you live near a microcenter. That would give you a much better upgrade path and the 1200 would crush the Celeron.

Would prefer to stay with Intel right now. Thanks for the input lightsout, totally open to used. Unfortunately until I have I think 100 posts I cant use the FS section here on the forums but eBay is an option. Any other input?

Did you see that ebay post? And last I checked you can still PM people that have FS threads? Or maybe that has been changed, I know I bought some stuff before I had full access.

Yeah I saw the post, thanks for your input. And no, I don’t think I can message, I’ve tried

That being said, I think I might go with the i5-6500 unless anyone else has some input.

I have the i3-6100 in my backup computer. I've used programs like Camtasia and Bluestacks without a problem. I even played Unreal Tournament pre-alpha demo on the onboard GPU. Also, it's compatible with Windows 7. I like it.

What do you define by 'basic tasks'?

You may get more performance for the money with an SSD.

I've seen old Core2 machines start to 'fly' again for 'basic tasks' with an SSD upgrade.

Also, you may have some model numbers wrong.

The G4930 is a coffee lake CPU. [Supposedly] Not compatible with B250 motherboards.

I'd just buy a cheap used mobo+proc. You can get a nice sandybridge combo for super cheap with all the people upgrading to ryzen right now for more cores. 2600k is still a phenomenal processor.

I’m currently deciding between the 6100 and the i5 6500...I’ll decide in the next week after a little more research.

Also, I do have an SSD in the rig.

I used this rig over the weekend for some streaming and word processing and everything was flawless and snappy. However, I still plan on upgrading the CPU

Sorry to bring this thread back to life, but...

I just got an i5 4590 free from work along with 8GB DDR3. I could buy a motherboard for $60 or so, would this be a worthwhile trade-off? Or should I stick with the newer platform?

On both of these: my wife still uses a Q8200 for basic office, surfing, and facebook. Works perfectly fine. Also use a i5-2400 for a htpc. Works great and even works well for livingroom gaming with a rx580.

Sell it and increase your budget. Might be able to swing a 6700/7700 chip (K or non-K).

I know this is a late reply but my i5-4570 with 8GB of RAM works fine for me (using Win7Pro) even though these days it probably wouldn't be faster than an i3 or even the fastest Pentiums.

MajorYikes, I believe you have a Kaby Lake Celeorn, the G3930. The 4000-series is Coffee Lake.

You bought the worst processor you possibly could, 2 cores and 2 threads. There''s too much in your Windows 10 OS that needs more than that available for multitasking, which is why people have good experience with old Core 2 Quad and Core i5 machines. 4 threads = the bare minimum.

Just upgrade to a Kaby Lake Pentium NEW with 4 threads would make a huge upgrade in the usability of your machine, and would be way less expensive than buying a new platform.

Wallah, it's now down to MSRP. Buy now before it skyrockets again, because it's discontinued.

I use a classic Core i3 3.3 GHz on my HTPC, and it works great for basic usability/multitasking, and driving older games. You're basically buying an even faster version of that, so it should give you some lifetime before your next upgrade. I can't tell the difference between that and my gaming PC's 4790k for basic desktop use.

Try to get your hands on the i5. The four physical cores will be much better than the i3. The i5 will also be 95% the performance of an i7. If your budget is that tight and youre using the same hardware , thats the way to go.

For a new build im sure everyone else here has already covered what I would have said.
