This Is Probably the Movie Version of Sonic the Hedgehog

I can only hope this is the second instalment of some sort of tie in to start off the Smash Universe. Starting with Detective Pikachu maybe next we will get Kirby or Kid Icarus. I don’t think they have the money to afford Link and Zelda though they will have to come in later in the development cycle.
At least with Detective Pikachu the monster designs are true to the source material. My only issue is what the hell is with this latest trend of making everything furry look like they were rubbed by a balloon? I thought we were past that after CG fur first became a thing in the late '90s.

I feel like I have to see this even though I know it will be bad.

I am like this too. Sometimes even though I know a movie will be garbage I go see it anyway in theater. My wife and I went to go see The Nun in theaters and I just laughed and enjoyed myself. It's a different experience going to the movies and watching a shitty movie then finding one on say Netflix. On Netflix you can sit and watch for 15-30 minutes decide the movie is trash and turn it off... in the theaters you paid for a ticket, you got your popcorn, and you are already there so you might as well sit through it. Sometimes shit is good shit when you're in the theaters because t's just a different experience.

I agree with you and I will go see Sonic too just because the cheese is too much in that movie, and maybe the new redesign now will be worth seeing it for... oh yeah and Jim Carrey being his best self is also entertaining nonsense.

Hopefully this bodes well, but you can redesign a character all you want but that doesn't mean it will make the movie better. The movie could still end up being a mindlessly fun movie to watch, but still be a shitty movie overall. We'll see.

I am just worried that they already released a full-on trailer and I am sure a huge amount of people already wrote the movie off so I wonder what a character redesign at this point will do.

What I don't get... Fan made series have done characters WAY better than these fucking 100Million dollar hollywood abortions.

How can companies with budgets that are less than 1/10th of 1% of hollywood do a better job?!!?!

There Will be Brawl - Nintendo World Noir
It's because production companies believe they need to make changes to cater to a wider audience to make more bank, which is what I believe is the primary reason for nearly all video game to movie adaptations failing miserably. I'd like to think that if they stayed true to the source material to cater to the core audience that they would perform better financially, but I guess Warcraft's abysmal box office performance proves that thesis wrong...

well maybe he gets kicked in the junk so hard his body shrinks and his legs grow to compensate... seems like the kind of physical gag I would expect from a movie of this level

WoW kinda tanked Domestically (47 Mill, on a 160 Million budget)

But did about 400 Million outside of the US, so that's hardly tanking.

Movies like this are not designed to "do well" at the box office. They are meant to do well with after release showings, tv slots, and DVD purchases/rental. So if the final form is not as horrible, word of mouth will spread interest and allow that to be a viable income source.

A much better version! I could probably watch it now!

It looked better before, now he looks out of place in the rest of the movie.

Also sets a bad precedent for caving in to online haters.

Oh thank god the new one looks so much better! Now it actually looks like the character we all know and love, with acceptable compromises here and there. Sorry, uni-eyes simply would not work in real life. But they still cleverly got around that with the spot of white fur between the eyes so it still looks faithful to the original design. Good thinking. (y)

And hats off to them for listening constructive criticism and not hold on to their "vision" with stubborn pride. This is not my kind of movie but I may go to see it because I want to support this kind of spirit in movir industry.

the last part with the dog was cute... the rest, meh, but it is a better trailer overall...

More inclined to spend money on the ticket to reward them for listening to the criticism.

Did it look better to you before because you are a furry? :D

Cause that thing was fucking hideous

As i saw pointed out, this could have been the best marketing ploy in years.
Get people up in arms about a horrible character design, then "cave" to online pressure to make it more faithful and bobs your brothers aunt, more ticket sales.

I liked the remix version of classic Sonic music in the trailer - and do think the revised Sonic looks better than the old one.

"Recently, long-time Sonic artist Tyson Hesse confirmed that he was brought in to 'lead the design' on the modified Blue Blur."
"Apart from serving as director and lead animator for the Sonic Mania opening cinematic, he also created the promotional mini-series Sonic Mania Adventures. Additionally, Hesse has contributed as an artist on the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series."

If you've never played Sonic Mania, here is the game's opening animation:

Sonic Mania Adventures:

They redesigned him:

Now that actually makes me slightly interested in watching the show. Not only is the Sonic animation better (and that is a major understatement), but the trailer makes it out to be a cheesy but fun romp of a movie, not some half-hearted attempt to make a serious show about a video game character. I may actually watch it if it comes out on Netflix.

yea, I'm only bummed because I was hoping for a serious space opera like battle star galactica or somethin... now this looks too kiddy for me with all it's humour and dancing... sad days yet again...

Oh thank THE POWER OF MONEY!!!

FTFY. :)

Now if only they replace Jim Carrie.
Sorry, he's way past his prime and he been pretty much the same actor since Fire Marshal Bill.

True. However this movie looks absolutely fucking atrocious. Not sure they are gonna recoup their investment to re-render the whole movie.

Did they have to re-render the whole movie, or just the trailer?

I have zero doubt it wasn't cheap..

- still not interested

Poor bastid can't catch a break..

At least he has Westworld and X-Men on his resume.

Not even that huge of a fan of the game but thank god! Still not likely to watch though.

Yeah, but who's legs are most anatomically stickdeath? Lupin or Sonic?

https://io9.gizmodo.com/the-title-sequence-for-lupin-iii-the-first-is-too-amaz-1840022093

Fujiko's seem the thickest (100% cellulite by toon standards), yet she wears the smallest shoe.
Waist realistically smaller than either boob, all for sake of not breaking an established art style...

After re-watching stickdeath, I've decided not to link it.
Not that hard to find if comparisons must be made.
Dilsney Minus fails to warn...

"A since-deleted tweet by user TRAFON claimed that the redesign cost production $35 million USD. This went viral, despite there being little evidence that this was anything more than a rough guess. Since then, Indiewire has been in contact with 'a source close to production', who informed them that the number was in the region of $5 million USD - still an insane amount of money to you or I, but likely a drop in the ocean for Paramount Pictures."

"The same source also notes that the only completed footage of Nightmare Sonic that existed was used in the trailer itself. Thus, the team only needed to fix those specific scenes, with Nu-Sonic being freshly created for the remainder of the movie. Hopefully this statement proves to be true, as it would mean that a lot less stress was thrust upon the visual effects team, who would otherwise have had to replace almost every digital shot in a 100-minute movie.

Of course, there is no official word on any of this - this is just an unnamed source after all..."
