So I really don't like Intel as a company and I'm finally looking to try to get rid of my server's Intel hardware and downgrade to an Opteron 6300 series setup (or ryzen) and am willing to accept the performance/efficiency penalty.

I have a pair of Xeon e5-2651 v2's on an Intel s2600cp motherboard with 64GB ECC DDR3 in my main server. This runs ESXi and does the following types of things:

Media/streaming server
Blue Iris + recording
router (incl dhcp etc)
compiling code
large bash scripts
Other stuff that stresses the CPU

My question is: How horrendously bad do you all think it would be going back to a pair of 16-core Opteron 6300 CPU's for the types of usage above? Namely the Opteron 6366 because it's lower clocked and probably the most efficient of the Opterons... and they're $20 a piece or less.

The other, much more expensive, idea was a single Ryzen 1700 with 32GB ECC DDR4 on that new microATX asrock board that has IPMI .... then upgrade to 16-core later. This would run less than half the power consumption and would destroy on single threaded tasks though cost a LOT more. Also may have compatibility issues with esxi.

-Opteron cost:
dual 6366's $30
board: $70
RAM: 0 (i already have)

-Ryzen cost:
Ryzen 1700: $150
Asrock board: $270
32GB ECC DDR4 2666: $150-200

thoughts?

edit: and yes I require IPMI :)

If the xeon is paid for keep it. Intel is not making any more money on you.

If it's a political or moral reason keep it. Intels not making any money on you.

This.

I don’t get your reason for wanting to downgrade. If it saved you a ton of heat and energy usage, or resolved a specific issue, I could maybe understand it. But downgrading simply because you don’t like Intel? Sorry, that’s silly. You’re only potentially hurting yourself in the process and since you’ve already spent the money on the Intel stuff, the “I don’t want to give Intel money” ship has sailed.

So the reason isn't just because I don't like Intel, it's also because i can get a decent amount of money out of the Intel CPU's and board and have a decent amount of money left over after downgrading to Opterons which will help a lot right now.

Ok well if you have a good reason like the one above then I understand. I know you didnt come here to justify anything and we do not have the right to judge your choices. However, if you are able to make a net profit in selling your Intel and getting AMD I say go for it.

As far as performance goes I would get a a Ryzen desktop processor. Since they are offiically supporting un- buffered ECC I say get a Ryzen and whatever amount of un- buffered ram that you need. It will perform substantially better and probably have even better power savings over that old opteron you listed.

I wouldn't waste time with the opterons at this point. The ryzen system would be the way to go if you really don't like Intel. I have two of the dual lga-2011 systems. One with dual e5-2670 v2 and one dual e5-2665 v1 chips. They burn power and create a lot of heat. In this point in time I mainly use laptops or my dual coffee lake nucs that handle compiling better than the dual systems a lot of the time because of high single threaded performance while sipping power. Once the new Ryzen chips are out I will evaluate a low power 16 core AMD system for my server and fully dump the xeon systems.

Thanks for the laugh OP. It's been a while since I've read something this retarded.

Come on now be more sporting that that. We never fully understand the motivations of another. Look in the mirror. I am sure you have been retarded in your posting history at some point as well. I know I have and will always post retardation from time to time.

I've been around here for a while, so perhaps have made some retarded posts. I didn't claim I never have, just thanked the OP for the laugh since it's been a while I've ready something quite this comical.

Judge not lest you be judged. I agree, if you can get money out of the hardware, do it. Performance and efficiency is moving so fast it might be time to rescue the capital, But i wouldn't waste my time with Opterons, Maybe Zen.

Edit: I don't feel like I'll get helpful conversation here so I'm closing the thread. Thanks for your input!
