Been out of the game for a bit and need to get some new screens...

Ok so I have been out of the loop on monitors for quite some time and I need to get some new screens. I previously had two 30" Dell 2560x1600 displays that I liked very much but unfortunately I recently lost nearly everything I owned, including them :/ So, I need to figure out what to do. Total budget here is ~$1000 or so, preferably a bit less but it's definitely flexible.

So here is kinda what I am thinking -- either:
  1. a single large 4K screen with 1 or 2 smaller ones on the sides
  2. or like 2 matching ~27" 2560x1440 screens
I do play games a bit but I do a lot more dev/engineering work. I am interested in >60Hz but it's not a requirement. My GPU is a bit old, a R9 290 but it will be replaced soon with probably a Radeon VII. Will pretty much 100% stay on AMD GPU's so not interested in G-SYNC, but Freesync would definitely be nice.

So, with option 1 it would be nice to have >60Hz but that racks up the cost quick. I would be pretty OK with going with some cheap ~24" 1080p screens on the side. I'd probably get one at first and another one later.

With option 2 it would be nice if I could just get a matching pair of 120/144Hz Freesync displays and be done with it (actually might end up throwing a cheap 1080p screen on the side too, because real-estate :) )

What displays are good options here?
 
I also saw the 32" LG 1440p 144Hz model on eBay for $280 today if you prefer LG to Pixio. I'm looking for one myself also.

Depends on what your eyes can resolve for resolution. Some people can't stand 1080p because they can see the pixels (dot pitch).

IMHO a 27" - 1080p 144 hz monitor is a no brainer for gaming. Usually around $200-250.00, does not need a heavy duty card to keep high frames pretty much negating the need for any-sync (except for frame tearing). VA or IPS is a good choice of panel. I've been very extremely with my acer curved 27" 1080p for the past year and a half. This is coming from someone who used to have a Sony FW900 CRT.

As far as a monitor for development the world is your oyster. So many choices.

I'm also interested in a 32" 144hz. Are there any known good ones out there? 27" seems to be the most common size now and the center of discussion.

I'm currently running a 27" LG 4K IPS and 2 27" 1080P 144hz TN panels. I'd like to sell the LG and one of the 1080 panels (keeping other for another desk) and go to 2x 32" monitors.

Is the quality of 1440P at 32" still nice? 4k @ 27" looks INCREDIBLE if you sit close, but I can't stand playing "sitting close" games at 60hz. So the 4k panel gets next to no use in gaming, I always play at 1080P unless its something using a controller like Dark Souls.
 
I was in the same boat as the OP.

I had a 43" Sony TV, then I decided I needed to play shooters again.
I'm not a pixel density is everything guy, I want the real estate to reconfigure workspaces as needed.

27" XB2 was nice, but I'm running a 1080ti and was only pushing 180-ish fps on the games I play.
27" 1440p was better, and the frame pacing was better at 1440p than 1080p.

If you can run both, 43" most of the time and 27" is on a monitor arm.

I ended up with an Acer X34 as a compromise.
I miss the extra workspace quadrant, I'm not so Johnny on the spot sniping, but it's a single monitor solution that covers all my bases.
 
The only problem I see is this with that Pixio refurb:

Yeah, I saw it, we'll see how it goes! I'd be willing to live with 1 or 2, not in the center. The other day the new ones were $339 and I was considering just getting those, but then they went up to $369 :/
 
I just bought a 27” Acer XF270HU from their refurbished store. Think it was $340. It’s a 1440p 144hz IPS panel with freesync. I was worried about it being a refurb but it arrived and looked brand new and freesync works perfect with my 1080 Ti Strix. They actually sent the newer XF270HUA with basically no bezel.

A few months before that I bought a Dell DGF2719 I think it was. It’s also a 27” 1440p screen. They are very nice (for being TN) freesync panels that go up to 155hz and can be found on sale for $320 usually. My wife is using it now because she doesn’t notice the gamma shift on TN panels when you move your head up or down. Drives me nuts so I found the Acer and gave it a shot. Freesync works perfectly with her 1070 Strix.

No regrets here on either monitor. My wife loves the Dell and I love the Acer.
