What is the time split for your use of VR Headsets

Hi,
I want to own one, but I am not sure what I would be using this for. Someone gave me an Oculus GO as a gift and it is cool, but has limited use for me. Though I am curious about buying a Rfit.

For those who own a Rfit/some other VR headset, what is the breakdown of time spent on it? Movies? Games? If so, can you please share your best experiences?

Just getting a sense of how people are actually using these things - so please try to separate out what you "aspire" to use it form what you really use it. Feel free to share aspirations as well - but more importantly - what is your time actually spent on when the headset is on?

The Go is a great media consumption device, but I do not game on it. Generally used when I travel.

The Rift I game on maybe 30 min to 1 hour a day or every other day. Other times I will watch some movies with friends through big screen.

What kind of gaming? I assume friends must have Rift to make this fun?

So... I use it for Elite Dangerous, Beat Saber, Robo Recal, Dirt, Alien Isolation, Subnautica, Serious Sam... there are really too many games to list. I do not think the game required both people to be on the same HMD. The Star Trek Bridge Commander was even cross platform, that game really depended on your team knowing what they were doing or you would all die.

Hmm, thanks for the insights. I'll check out the games and do some research.

The resolution generally on Occulus GO leaves much to be desired. I image rift is higher res?

100% games for me. I don't watch movies or do anything else with it. I'd say 80% iRacing, 10% Onward and 10% other games. Pretty much like that since I got the Rift initially, replaced it with an Odyssey+ back in November. I did a little more other games earlier on just trying stuff out, maybe watched a 3d movie or two when I first got it but lost interest in that pretty quickly.

To give an idea, I probably run iRacing 8-10 hours a week. On big race weekends (ie 24 hour races) I might spend that much in it in one day. 24 hours of nurburgring is in 3 weeks, I'll be driving 6 hours of it and will be spotting for other drivers for 4-6 hours. I'll probably spend 2x that practicing and doing setup work in the weeks leading up to it. So it's heavily skewed, but I'm a car nut and cars have always been my hobby, and VR is absolutely perfect for it.

Games exclusively, for me. I can't really imagine watching movies on it - the quality is lower than just watching movies on my TV.

Thanks everyone for the breakdown, especially bobzdar for details. It seems the best usecases for VR at the moment is gaming - which is cool! I think I might need to get myself one ;)

Damn that’s some commitment, I’m guessing you have a pretty specific setup for that? (Wheel, seat, pedals, etc.)

Beat saber was reason enough for me. Ever enjoyed guitar hero or ddr? Beat saber is SO MUCH BETTER!

Yeah, it is, but it basically replaces watching tv for me. I've got an accuforce direct drive wheel and some thrustmaster pedals with a loadcell brake (braking in game based on pressure instead of position of a potentiometer). I built a home made cockpit out of 2x4's that works well and is easy to slide out of the way when I'm not using it.

It's a nice setup but honestly a good old logitech g29 attached to a sturdy desk or a playseat is fine and lots of fun.

I bought it 100% for DCS and Il2 Battle of Stalingrad. A few months ago I started using the Rift for watching 3D movies. Split is now 80% flight sims and 20% movies. After I got my WidmoVR prescription lens inserts I started to use the Rift for longer sessions. I can now comfortably watch a movie for a few hours. With my glasses on sessions only lasted about 30 minutes before the pressure on my nose and temples became uncomfortable. Total time per week that I use the Rift is about 10-15 hours. Once I get back into Elite and figure out how to control my ships, without being able to see the keyboard, use will probably go up.

There is great stuff out there, but between my Rift and my PSVR, and I just ordered a Quest for family, id say VR gaming or other use equates to roughly 2% of usage at this point. When i first had them, it was a TON of usage for probably about 3-4 months. Then it wore off. I still love the tech, just dont have anything there yet to make it daily use for me.
