Hi,

I sold some ram on Ebay. Was HyperX 4x8gb C14 2800mhz Ram modules used but in working condition. So I sold it for like $140 shipped and buyer wants to return it because he said it didnt match the description which is ridiculous. I took clear photos of each module.

In anycase I have nothing against taking a return but not if I have to pay for return shipping costs. In matter of fact I have no idea if this guy wants to return them because he was hoping for Samsung B die and got Hynix or if it doesnt overclock like he would like.

So I don't know what to do. What should I do?

Thanks

Only thing you can do is take the hit and accept the return. eBay will almost always side with buyer on an “item not as described”. For a small package like that just send them a USPS first class mail label, should only cost a few dollars.

ebay is bad on just siting with the buy but i would still try to fight that since it has no description on how it differs

I reached out to the guy asking for specifics. Doesnt seem fair but I almost didnt sell the ram because he won on the first bid and item was sold at a loss in my opinion. Thanks.

It really sucks that eBay doesn't require the buyer to contact the seller before submitting one of those "item not as described" complaints. If i were you I'd make sure whatever service you use to have it sent back that it's insured in case the buyer pulls something.

This is why I no longer bother selling items on ebay. This buyer is always right policy works against a small seller where you end up losing money even if its the buyers fault.
I agree. Never had good experiences selling on eBay. Always some issue that cost me something on top of all the fees you have to pay. Just doesn't seem worth it. FB or CL local sales are the way to go.

Fight it out. I gotten a dozen of these "buyer's remorse" or such.

Try to be friendly as possible like a customer service rep slave. Ask the specifics how it is "not as describe" and that the ram is fully functional.

Smells like an ebay RMA to me. Guy buys it, swaps it with his broken parts, returns his broken parts to you. Or maybe I've just heard too many of these horror stories. In any case, I'd be surprised if you actually get your original DIMMs back.

Great

That's why you take clear, comprehensive pictures of everything including the serial numbers. I would also mention that in any correspondence. I've had buyers "miraculously" find that their item works just fine after they find out I have photos of the serial numbers.

This is what I have:

Going to ask him send me a photo showing theyre safe for return.

Just accept the return and get it over with. Trust me Ebay will side with the buyer. If he sends back something different than what you sold him you will win the dispute.

Except if the buyer says you sent him a rock instead of RAM and he's returning your rock. Then you are at the whim of ebay. Ebay sucks.

you got shafted, same thing happened to me with with the yacht I sold on ebay. You will have to pay for return shipping, open the return before he complains to ebay though so it wont count as a mark against you.

Did you have your return policy set as "No Returns"? If so, you can possibly fight it by going through support - if not you need to just suck it up unfortunately.

Assuming you did have "No Returns" set, then you can fight it and speak with the Ebay customer service reps providing detailed pictures of the item vs the descriptions and probably provide some links to product specs and images elsewhere as proof.

Best case scenario, they change the return status from item not matching description to another status (buyers remorse). The buyer will unfortunately still be able to post feedback, so expect some really negative garbage from them at this point.

IMO - is it worth the effort, probably not. I spent hours collecting the necessary information and calling back Ebay support repeatedly...

"Item not as described" trumps any sort of return policy on Ebay.

I have sold optical driver to a small company that then returned it on it was not working
came back still sealed.

ppl that tries to scam like that deserves harsh punishment.

but for real, take the return and hope for the best. if not you'll end up in my boat and have your account flagged as "below standard" if you have too many defects. then you're really fucked paying extra fees.

Yep.

As a counterpoint I’ve sold a few thousand items on eBay over the last decade and only have an issue come up about 1 out of a 100. Never gotten truly boned where someone ships me back a brick but had a few “item not as described” returns. I just took the return and resold it, sometimes for a higher price to offset the return shipping cost. It sucks but it’s the cost of doing business on eBay.

Only time I’ve gotten 100% screwed was selling a ~$100 external hard drive on amazon. Buyer claimed they didn’t get it. USPS showed delivered but that wasn’t good enough for amazon and they refunded the buyer. So I don’t use amazon anymore.

I probably will do the refund but I just have to know what the issue was and worried about wether or not they are in working condition anymore.

At least they came with a lifetime warranty of which I probably will cash in.

Thanks.

That's assuming you get back the ones you sent.

There's no shortage of scumbag scammers who will do all they can to get something for nothing. It's why Amazon support has steadily gone from wonderful to a puddle of shit. Only so many people can claim their Amazon Warehouse $700 RTX2080 wasn't what they ordered and then send back their old GTX660 for a full refund before the company starts punishing honest consumers. Same thing here.

Why didn't it match the description? that is important here. You need to get him/her to tell you exactly why. then you can fight it. Buyers remorse is not a valid reason for a return so depending on their wording you use it against them. once they tell you exactly why, call ebay and work it out.

If you do the return and they don't match immediately call ebay. don't use the website or anything.

I just email messaged him on Ebay again asking whats up with the ram and that I would be happy to issue a refund once I know the details.

Since its been like ten hours since I heard from him I am very suspicious.

Thanks

Nothing out of the ordinary there. I'm telling you lots of times these people are fucking useless. Anyways I'm hoping things work out okay for ya.

10 hours is nothing.

I had to drag on a dispute with a buyer on a brand new & factory sealed i7-4790K for about 3 weeks. The buyer ended up ghosting on me and paypal sided with me on the day when paypal was allow to step in and make a final decision. I spoke with a rep on that day on the phone. He looked over the dispute and the messages between the buyer and me. The fact that I was friendly and trying to show good customer and tech support in the dispute log is what helped my claim as well. Paypal rep believed that the buyer just had "buyer's remorse" in which he closed the dispute and issued back the funds back to my account.

Just ordered a set of 100.00 Hyper Cloud X Alphas off ebay and it was shipped to the wrong state I got them for 40.00 but both ebay and paypal is a dead end untill a few days have passed. Not sure if it's the wrong tracking number entered I doubt it really depressing that some guy got a set of 100.00 headphones delivered and probably is going to keep them.

@op Sounds like buyer's remorse - bought your RAM then found something else, figured they would just return yours and not have to pay anything by using the "not as described" return reason. As a seller I had a conversation with an ebay rep about a similar situation. Ebay CAN change the reason for a return, but they told me they only do it if:

1) the request to change the return reason is made BEFORE you accept the return
2) you can show it's fine.

"not as described" or "defective" used to put negative marks on an ebay seller account, I don't know if anyone cares much about that these days. But there's only a couple of return reasons that require the seller to pay return shipping. "I no longer want the item" or "doesn't fit" or a few others all require the buyer to pay for the return postage.

In my particular case it was a buyer trying to upgrade an old Mac system to more RAM than it actually supported (and, while some Macs worked just fine when doing so, this was a case where there were documented issues with people trying the same thing).

Now I learned about this after I accepted the return (I couldn't figure out how to do the return without accepting the return), but was told clearly that ebay's suggestion here was to tell the buyer to send it back at their own expense, test it out, etc, all before "accepting" the return. If everything checked out they could have changed the reason, I could have issued a refund minus restocking fee.

(Amusingly, in my paypal account I see that I have an outstanding invoice to this buyer for them to pay me back for the return shipping and restock fee, going on a couple years now I guess. I don't expect to ever get it from them, but the idea that they get an annoying reminder from their paypal account about an unpaid invoice is funny to me.)

All that said:

Your picture is clear enough to make out some of the unique identifying info on the DIMMs. If that picture was included in the ebay auction and the buyer sends back something else, you've got proof of what you were selling vs. what came back.

You can accept the return and thoroughly test the memory when it comes back. You don't have to issue the refund immediately (and I wouldn't do so anyways).

You could probably ask them to pay for return shipping themselves until you test it out, but if you do, I would very clearly state that they need to return it using a specific shipping method, and that you will only reimburse up to X dollars for that method (so tell them to return ship it USPS first class, and let them know they are welcome to Fedex Express Priority Overnight Early Delivery if they want but they're still only getting $3.50 back for it).

Ultimately it's just a couple bucks shipping.

I don't like doing business on ebay for lots of reasons but the simple fact is, if I want to sell my stuff, I've probably got to do it there. Trading forums are hit or miss -there's a guy selling delidded 9th gen i7 and i9 processors here right now, they are listed at significant discounts from the retail price, and they've been listed for weeks now. But put the same on ebay and it will get snapped right up. If there was a decent alternative with anywhere near the reach that ebay has, I expect we'd have heard about it by now. :(

They are very nice. Thanks.

Got my refund but this is what happened......

I’m very sorry you did not receiving your item. I received a email shortly after you purchased from someone claiming to be you. They asked to send it to an alternative address, I totally got scammed and I feel terrible you won’t be getting your headphones. I will refund your money. Have a great day.

This just means they didn't sell as high as the seller had hoped and this is his way of cancelling the auction. I would bet they get relisted.
