Epic buys Rocket League developer Psyonix, will stop selling the game on Steam

Epic is going full bore investing every penny they get from fortnite into attempting to build the epic store and kill the rivals.

Yet they simultaneously said they wouldn't build up the epic UI to match steam.

Is there really nobody working for Epic who understands the social reasons why most people prefer Steam?

RIP. Looks like I need to find a new game to fall back on when I get bored of my other games.

What "new audience" are they referring to, exactly? Epic store and Steam share the same audience o_O

They said only like 30% of people on EGS use Steam.

They're probably going to make it free to play.

I’m also pretty positive it’ll be free to play. The game has already sold tens of millions of copies and I’m willing to bet the majority of new copies sold were the $5 copies for smurf accounts (have a few myself). The game is a micro-transaction money maker similar to Fortnite (not on the same level though). Makes sense to open the game to everyone and hope they drop money on micro transactions.

personally i always felt it should of been a f2p game, i hate microtransactions but would of made total sense for a game like that and also would of probably kept a larger player base for much longer.

Oh Wonderful.
They Need to focus on making great games again instead of stuff like this. smh.

This is just business. Actually, I think this may be the kick in the ass that Valve needs to start innovating on the software side of things again. It may turn out to be a net positive for pc gaming.

I have nothing against Epic and the FUD against them and their launcher is ridiculous, but this is a bit messed up. But then again I understand that you do not exactly want to sell your product in your competitors marketplace if you have your own.

I'd wager quite a few. However none of them are in the high end offices or are counting beans.

In all likelihood it's a business decision. As much money as it costs, it is cheaper to pay for exclusivity and acquire and make exclusive titles that match your portfolio, than to do proper market research and actually develop and support a competitive product that people would ACTUALLY PREFER.

The thing is, as much as I disagree and hate what they are doing, I understand their motivation behind it. There are people like me who are happy with what we have, have a huge catalogue of titles and don't want yet another store, and who would never switch, regardless of how good they made it. I guess they feel they have to force the issue and twist peoples arms in order to be successful.

The thing is, because of Fortnite they already have the entire next generation of PC gamers in their install base. They didn't NEED these drastic measures. All they needed to do was to bring more titles to their store and maybe temporarily offer them at more attractive pricing, and they would have had customers in droves.

Market manipulative behaviors piss me off no matter what, but the fact that they chose this approach even when they didn't have to just makes me want to set them on fire. I hate market manipulation wherever I see it. Just like how Microsoft pissed me off with their strong-arm approach to Windows 10 upgrades, this is pissing me off too.

By trying to force something on me they have essentially turned me into a zealot against them. I will not install their client or give them any of my money no matter what. It doesn't matter what title they make exclusive. It simply will not happen. I do not take well to being manipulated.

What's Rocket League?

Yeah, I'm not really familiar with the title either. I can't picture what it looks like, but I've heard it mentioned in these forums over the last few years that it is a title that kids seem to enjoy. Probably lines up well with their demographic for Fortnite.

This type of behavior still pisses me off, even when it isn't impacting me directly.

Rocket League is a game where you pilot a car and try to hit a ball into the enemy net. Soccer with cars? I didn't like it or Fortnite.

I have no intention of spending money on the Epic Games store this year. The store isn't bad and the client works well enough. My issue is that I forget that I have UPLAY games, Origin games, etc. Once in awhile I will play something from my GOG account. I haven't fired up Battlefield in many months.

I have 3411 games in my Steam Library. I can play those until I'm 100 and never get through the backlog.

Maybe Epic Games should invest time into creating a client that organizes our game launchers into a simple interface. A key feature would be game detection. If the client could detect if you own a game without having to install the game; it would interest me.

Rocket League is definitely a young man's game requiring faster reflexes than most. At 35, I find myself struggling to keep up with the youngsters. Still fun though.

+1

I really need to find more game time :p

You realize they were bought out right? It would be like Valve buying out a developer (L4D, CS, DOTA2, actually everything that isn't Half Life) and putting their game only on Steam. Same reason why EA isn't putting their games on Steam anymore. Sounds like this studio has had ties with Epic for years and now that Epic has some money may be buying a few studios here and there. I can see this becoming a common trend. Epic has a strong relation with many smaller independent game studios due to Unreal Engine. Wouldn't amaze me if one was struggling that Epic would buy them out. Or they would consider selling themselves to Epic. When Fortnite dies down Epic can make money off their now numerous in house studios making games.

Thanks for the heads up, I'm the same age. Still, I should buy this on steam before they stop selling it.

Maybe. I’m not that much younger than you and I was a Champion II (top 2% I believe) when I stopped playing about 6 months ago. It’s a game that has a massive learning curve that takes a LOT of time to master. I have about 800 hours in the game over all my accounts.

That's what all the anti epic fud is. Manipulation. Take a look at your own posts even!

No. Epic is limiting customer choice and they are being rightfully condemned for it.

There is no way a fair minded person could see it any other way.

They are a cancer on this industry at the moment.

Wonder if Epic will support the Linux gamers, this title seems popular with the penguins.

Valve doesn't need to innovate since it's primarily been just a game store for the last ten years or more. The could start making games again, but there is simply no reason to. They aren't going cave to EGS because the exclusives will eventually show up on Steam.

I can't buy Half Life on anything other than Steam. Are you going to bash Steam for limiting customer choice because they only release titles they own on their own platform? Overwatch, WoW, and Diablo are Battle.net exclusives. Are you going to bash Blizzard? So is this really about consumer choice or just your preference for Steam?

But those titles were made by the company that promotes them on their own storefronts, Epic just makes some rickety half assed storefront then uses their endless supply of Fortnite money to monopolize the market, that's the difference.

Epic would never sell Fortnite on Steam or any other Storefront, just like Blizzard will never sell World of Waracft on another storefront.
