Wing subsidiary becomes the first group to be approved for drone delivery as an airline by the FAA.

Drone regulations still don’t permit most flights over crowds and urban areas, limiting where Wing can operate. But the approvals signed by the FAA on Friday and Monday give the company the ability to charge for deliveries of clients’ goods in Virginia and apply for permission to expand to other regions.

Oh I can. There are a lot of stupid people out there.

Florida doesn't have a monopoly on stupid people (but they might have a majority stake :ROFLMAO:)

AHH! I FORGOT ABOUT FLORIDA MAN!

The 101st Florida Brigade will be out in force with their anti-aircraft shotguns (and large quantities of liquor)

Wait until someone publishes the 'makezine' plans on diy drone jamming.

and then get your buts ready when they send you to "pound me in the ass" prison for shooting down a drone.
This is the silver lining to the hassle of having to get a FAA 107 cert, and having to register a drone with the FAA. If someone's malicious, they're fucking with a registered craft which then can get FAA involved if operator wants to push it.

I used to be in the "lol skeet shoot all the dronez" camp, but then I actually used one and holy hell my opinion changed. The tech is amazing, and anyone that loves tech couldn't help but marvel at the level of precision they've evolved to. And ofcourse used responsibly as to not annoy anyone.

If the delivery drones have cameras and other recording devices(to assure quality service), folks under the flight path of these will probably get somewhat irritated. Daddy may get irate when drone #12 starts hovering over his 13yr old daughter sunbathing in the back yard that is otherwise surrounded by a privacy fence. Plus if they fly low, the noise could be a further irritation. The one delivering pizza to your neighbor won't be too bad. 100 per hour if you happen to be near a distribution warehouse could render a backyard mostly useless.

Kids + kites with nets might be a deterrent.

So let's just think about this:

Google has had an opaque business model that, until recently, we found out has been selling its users (which is basically everyone) out to the highest bidder... they essentially have little in terms of ethics.

Are we OK letting this same company fly "delivery drones," equipped with a litany of cameras and sensors that we may never know about, over our houses and properties?

Sweet! Now what do we all do with our ring doorbells that show people taking packages off our porch???

Now they will just be shooting down the drones to take our packages!

But hey, I guess spying on us threw our phones wasnt good enough for 100% coverage.. now they video everyone.. even the homeless!

They already have photographs of your back yard from aerial imagery. You just don't notice that plane.

yeah but now they can conceivably see into your window, garage, shed etc. it's yet another (big) layer of privacy stripped away.

In real time, easily move to get a better image, at any time (with tons of drones available).

It has the potential to be a privacy nightmare. Like many other things. The internet used to have the potential to be a privacy nightmare, now it just is a nightmare.

I think it really comes down to trust. Do you trust Google? Do you trust the FAA and other government agencies to keep them in line and hold them accountable to the people and not the intelligence agencies?

Lots of room for abuse, I just don't think it'll be abused yet. Maybe a decade or two down the road, they'll keep putting regulation upon regulation and eventually it'll be alright to monitor people and their movements because "if you have nothing to hide...". But, right now, nah...

I sound overly paranoid about that kind of stuff. Could be completely harmless for a long time. I just like to be aware that the potential for misconduct is there and it'd be easy to do. I don't think they'll do it, but for a lot of things that I didn't think they'd do, someone ended up doing it.

No, you're not being overly paranoid - this isn't a conspiracy theory, there is sufficient historical evidence to suggest that this (or something like this) will be the course that google takes. If there is anything that these drones pick up on that can be even remotely monetized then you can be sure that it will be.

Google is one step closer to slapping a weapon on and getting a government defense contract

I'm not sure how I feel about these in the future. I think drove delivery could be awesome, and I would use it however. Stepping outside at 9:00 AM in the morning for a nice nice walk on a 72 degree sunny morning. The beauty piece and quiet would be somewhat ruined if there were several drones in the air making deliveries at that time.

Wonder what the weight limit would be? Haha

Can see it now.. news report with a guy claiming a microwave fell from a drone and threw his roof!

Yup, I am.

Companies fly planes and helicopters over all the time. A Drone is no different to me.

Not so fast....
Maybe but Google probably didn't own or control those other planes and helo's

Did you know Google......

Taps your Android cell phone and is protected by the Fed Govt in doing so?
Records EVERYTHING you've ever typed into their search engine (and shares that with uncle Sam)?
Has been sued for maliciously denying adsense payments to certain groups for political reasons?

If any of this bothers you, use Duck Duck Go.

I work as a contractor on US Government contracts.

I started out in 1981 with a TS clearance and I worked SIGINT.

I worked my way up. I've done SIGINT, All Source Intel, and HUMINT. Now I do IT for software developers who develop tools for .........

None of the tin-foil wearing crowds less-than half-informed fears worry me, except that they are so damned noisy about it.

I am fine using Google. You are welcome to think something else is more secure.

EDITED: I will tell you what does worry me, or at least what I am unhappy about.

That following Manning and Snowden and Wikileaks, and in response to the never ending crying guys like you keep on about. The government leadership, meaning Congress, has approved and instituted the exact shit that you guys fear, against all the people like me. After 40 years of maintaining a "trust" relationship with my employer, and now my customer, he don't trust me and instead he's going to crawl all inside my bank accounts, and everything else in my life to include ......... yes wait for it........ here it comes........my online social media activity.

Think about that now won't you.......if he's reading what I am saying right now, isn't he getting your comments as well?

Because of guys like you, there are now digital Typhoid Mary's like me. Everywhere in social media that I, and the hundreds of thousands like me go, now they go. And because I and hundreds of thousands like me are in contact with you and everyone else ........... are you getting it yet?

So you can say I was wrong about them not doing all of this before. But if they were, then they already were getting me, so why would they need to start that now? And if they weren't, well they damned sure are now, by proxy via-guys like me.

I want to thank you so much. You are representative of champions everywhere.

If you detect a hint of irony, don't let it concern you, it's real.

People kept screaming "Who's watching the watchers"

Well they sure as fuck are watching the watchers now, and everyone the watchers are talking too.

You damned well got your wish, enjoy it.
