Google Fi is having a half off sale on new Pixel 3 phones if you purchase and activate on Project Fi within 30 days. The terms only mention activation so you can likely cancel in a few days and get a pro-rated refund on service. Pixel 3 starting at 399 and XL at 449.

OOS on the XL for me :\

Only the Pixel 3 (5.5") 128GB option is available, and it's $449 after 50% discount.

Edit: n/m, refreshed and that somehow fixed it. Only pink available for XL, so meh.

Well when the Pixel 3xl is selling for less than a OnePlus 6t, it does make sense that the most popular colors would sell out after a few hours.

Yeah, I bit and got the regular Pixel 128GB Black for $449 + tax. Not as good a deal as the XL, but whatever. I've been holding out on a phone replacement for a while. Gonna ship them back my (now) defective Nexus 6P and maybe receive a~$50 credit. I liked my Nexus 6P back when it worked off a battery.

For those wondering, if you already have Project Fi you qualify for this discount. It's just those who don't who have to worry about the acitivation part.

from what i've been reading you can basically activate fi on the phone and cancel it after.. sadly i'd actually like to try out project fi but the networks they work with have god awful service here.

FYI, you might want to wait on shipping it back or documenting it before you do. If it was faulty due to a bad battery you might be able to get back $75, $150 for battery related shutdowns, $325 for bootloops, or up to $400 if you can prove you had a phone with both bootloops and battery issues. https://www.androidpolice.com/2019/...tion-settlement-will-pay-up-to-400-to-buyers/

Hmm, this is juicy stuff. Thanks for the heads up.

I had given up hope for anyone claiming responsibility. Didn't realize this was a common thing. I was given the cold shoulder from Google back in 2017. Guess I wasn't the only one.

From the arstechnica article
"Buying the Pixel 3 for half price does come with some caveats. First, it's through the Project Fi site, and the terms of the deal say you have to "activate" the phone with Google Fi. Fi doesn't have a contract though, so assuming you use 0GB of data, that just means you'll be on the hook for one month of $20 service. The deal is good until 11:59pm PT today only (April 22) or while supplies last. It is only open to US residents."

FI gives pro rated refunds for partial months (it did when I cancelled last month). I'd still recommend using a few days just to be safe.

Edit: People have reported cancelling right after activation for previous Fi deals but that's riskier than I'm willing to do. Also, just because it worked previously doesn't mean it will continue to do so. If you want to be absolutely safe, yes pay the $20 for 1 month of service. Based on experience with previous Fi promos, I personally would feel comfortable cancelling after a few days.

Any issues using this on ATT after canceling Fi?

No issues on ATT--went from Fi to Cricket with just a SIM swap. People mentioned you may need to call in if the Sprint part isn't immediately released (Project Fi uses Sprint as one of the networks its on). It can show up as already active on Sprint for a short period after cancelling.

Looks like Google is trying to drop inventory fast for their Pixel 4 as I bought one of the last of the Pixel 2s last month mainly because its a 1080p phone and I have zero interest in higher res screens.

Well, they are announcing something May 7th. Rumors are that it's the Pixel 3e, which would be a cut-down version of existing units. They could very well announce a Pixel 4.

However, it seems a bit too soon'ish to announce another generation given the current has only been out for ~6 months. I could see a Pixel 3 refresh though. Maybe something with more system RAM?

Yeah, I read the same thing too. Is more RAM really needed? I notice no performance issues with my Pixel 2, is it for gaming or because higher res screens need the added RAM I wonder?

Yeah, overspec'ing phones has become a marketing thing now. If it looks better on paper, it must be better, right?

More cameras, more megapixels, more ram, more screens, more, MORE, MOAR!

My phone has 2GB of ram and averages over 300MB free. The stats say it averages 82% used. My mind is blown how someone could need more memory on their phone unless they are using it as a workstation replacement / all in one device. Mine is a full on business device with outlook, office, jabber, Duo Mobile and many other apps used continually on it.
