MSI Gaming Monitor Stops a Stray Bullet (and Still Works)

PC gamer Eric Gan had five gunshots fired into his room Monday, one of which managed to hit the back of his monitor, an MSI Optix G27C2. Even if he were gaming at the time, he’d still be alive thanks to the display, which blocked the bullet from getting any further into the room. Incredibly, the monitor still works, but MSI is sending him a replacement anyway.

Of course, the bullet had already lost a significant amount of kinetic energy from penetrating through the wall before hitting the monitor. Had that not been the case, we expect the monitor would be in much worse shape. Either way, we're glad that Gan and his neighbors were unharmed in the incident.

Monitor didn't "stop" the bullet, it just happened to be the last thing the bullet passed into. It passed though the outside wall, and interior sheet rock, then into the monitor. It was also from what I was reading a .25 ACP.

Well it did technically stop the forward velocity of the bullet (technically correct is the best kind of correct), but it sure as hell aint any kind of bulletproof.

Yeah, even a .25acp would tear through a modern monitor.

Now if a old 21" trinitron got it right in the coil from the back, I'd say it would stop a .25acp easy enough.

Bethesda, EA, THQ Nordic all need to take a lesson from this. No 8chan, duffel bags, & weak-sauce games. just "MSI: Yeah sure, we'd take a bullet for you."

Yeah i think he should be happy he sat behind a wall and not a window, cuz then depending on person size and relationship to monitor he would be bad off, myself if a bullet hit there on my monitor light now, i would have a nice hole in my forehead cuz my eye height are 1 -2 inches below the top of my 27" monitor.
Thankfully i am covered by 2 brick walls one of them 2 layer outside wall, on the other hand behind me is a big ass window and on the other side of the road a school where actually today they had 2 kids getting stabbed this afternoon.
But i am not on ground floor so a shooter will have to long ball me from a tree or house way out, and chance it cuz my blinds on the window are always on and have been so the 8 years i have lives here.

IMO we need more shootings here,,,,, way more.

If I lived in wherever the hell he lived I think I would save the money he is spending on vidya and try to get out of the neighborhood

How much more American can a news story be?

Love it.

Fresno is one hell of a place, huh?

I've never seen a gun or heard gunshots in Massachusetts. Here you get arrested on the spot for open carry, and need pretty serious licensing for concealed carry. Unless you have a concealed carry license, you can't even transport a weapon unless it is in the trunk unloaded and locked in either a portable safe or with a trigger or barrel lock.

Congrats on being the fun ruining know it all

Guess some people don't like truth?

Ignorance about guns and bullets is high, many people would read that and think it could really stop a bullet because someone used a click bait title. Hell, the person who wrote it might even believe it.

Of course MSI won't let him keep this gem! That monitor will probably get on display at MSI's sales HQ (or similar).

". The shots came in around 4 AM and he wasn't sitting at his PC at the time—but if he was, the monitor, an MSI Optix G27C2, might have saved his life."

I don't know why artificial scenarios get created to then praise or condemn something bother me so much. He wasn't sitting there, and I don't think there was enough energy in the bullet to kill him if it couldn't even crack the plastic backing on the monitor.

It is gun owners like the idiot shooting in the story that become the poster child for restricting gun use/ownership groups.

Never fired a 25acp before, know anyone with one I can try?

From the first damn post....

But by all means, continue to double-down on your idiocy. It's amusing.

Double down on what idiocy? You seem very upset for some reason.

Its like saying "his shirt stopped the bullet", but not talking about the body armor he was wearing. The bullet passed through an exterior wall and interior wall before hitting the monitor, had it not, it would have passed straight through the monitor.

That's some crazy pretzel logic  Just think, if the monitor wasn't there, the bullet would still be traveling, Amazing!

I guess Ole' Albert was wrong.

Point being that if the bullet couldn't pass through the monitor, it did not have enough kinetic energy to be lethal. It wasn't thanks to the display that he was still alive if he happened to be in its path, it was thanks to the walls of his house.

That moment when the bullet lands on your skin, gives a little tickle, then treats you like Hulk. Monitor no need, monitor smash!

Go ahead, argue that with the person who is still alive, I would love to see that.

Yes, with less force than a BB gun, just enough to crack the plastic on the back of the monitor. But I guess you are the type to think that the 1mm plastic shell is what "stopped" the bullet.

If you think it stopped the bullet, I will buy this exact monitor, and you can hold it while I shoot it.

I would be happy to educate them about firearms and ballistics. However the person was using it as a self marketing event for his stream, I really doubt he cared other than the media attention it got him.

Things like this may fuel the anti-Constitution crowd but there are plenty of other cases which are shining examples of why gun restrictions cost lives.

I don't own a pistol in .25 ACP because I prefer my weapons to be useful, or at the very least, entertaining. Tiny pocket guns in nearly worthless chamberings aren't much fun to shoot.

Sadly outside of gun sites, you almost never hear about those events, no less on MSM. The other downside is that most cases where a gun is involved in defense, it's never discharged and never reported.

I don't have a .25 ACP anymore, I much rather my M&P 22 if I am going to shoot something on the cheap. If it's a carry, I would use a 380, as .25 frame wise is not much smaller, but find things like the 9mm M&P shield to be more than compact enough.

And people like the ones in the story, are often not allowed to legally own guns to start with, willing to bet if they found who was shooting that they have a record of some sort and they have the .25 because its the only thing they could afford.

Take a screwdriver, and apply enough force to your monitor until the housing cracks. Then do the same to your skin and see if it's capable of penetrating your skin. Chances are it won't, much less be capable of penetrating your skill.

It may not have been the main loss of velocity, but it certainly contributed.
Having this impact your body at the wrong place instead of a monitor probably wouldn't be that safe, so I'd also go with the monitor stopped it.
