Assassin's Creed Unity is the next Review Bombing Victim on Steam - But, in a Good Way.

Ubisofts shallow drop in the bucket donation for marketing and publicity purposes worked.

It's kind of a shame.

It's as if I had donated $5, and then gone around patting myself on the back for it and hoping to get praise. Such a shame that they were successful in this regard, IMHO. This half-assed effort at pandering was more deserving of an eye roll than anything else.
 
I wonder if valve considered positive review bombs for their filter system :p

they didnt have to donate anything at all. lets not just get carried away with blind hate for all things ubisoft (and believe me we ARE on the same side on that one). They did something good, just recognize it. it doesnt negate everything bad, it doesnt make them the hero, it just means they did something good and its okay to recognize it.
you can go back to yelling at them to get off your lawn the next time they screw up which should be in roughly 2 weeks by my calendar.

Its over half a million dollars. Pull the stick out of your ass for half a second. There is such a thing as being too cynical. Even if it was for PR purposes, who fucking cares? It doesn't hurt to say "good job" and move on.

So should no one do anything for anyone else if there is something to be gained for the giver?

How many times do we see all over 'the rich could easily help out and it wouldn't hurt them" and when they actually do we criticize their motives that we assume they have.


Probably should get rid of being able to write off donations on taxes. We really only want people to donate and help if they have nothing to gain from it in return.

You are kinda pissing out of the bucket this time.. ubisoft its a french company.. you should know how important its notre-dame for their people..

What ubisoft did wasnt only as PR movement.. but as a duty for their own country and their own employees which are a bit over 13.000 and a lot of them are on france, thats why they did Such effort in the recreation of the environment of AC:UNITY.

I hate ubisoft as most people here, but also I think they did a good deed this time and they deserve to be recognized for it.. also I do enjoy A LOT their tittles.. but even if I hate them as a company I wont stop to play their games.. assassins creed, watch dogs, far cry, Prince of persia, rainbow six, splinter cell, ghost recon, as few examples are always on top of my favorite games..
 
I have mixed feelings about the whole rebuilding effort. It's nice people with money can come together for one thing. But I would argue there's plenty of more worthwhile ventures than rebuilding of a church - despite it's age and historical significance. That said, the building is beautiful and losing it would still be a shame.

In term's of Steam's review bombing policy - it should go both ways, Good and Bad.

I keep seeing arguments like “We should be spending money on x, y, and z rather than rebuilding a building!” Here are the facts:

1. Companies and individuals donate billions every year to stop hunger, cure cancer, help disaster victims, provide vaccines, etc.
2. “We” is an interesting term in these arguments, as the money donated isn’t “our” money - it is money belonging to an individual or corporation and they made the conscious decision on what to spend it on. That’s their business and their right.
3. This building is an iconic, awesome historical landmark which is over 800 years old and isn’t just a “building.”

In the case of Ubisoft, I'd agree. In the case of you, well I don't know your financials. However, $5 is something you didn't have to donate. If that's all you can afford, then that $5 could have gone to something personal that you needed. So, I do think some praise is in order when an individual does something outside of themselves...even if it's small. One of the things I can't stand about the last few years is this tendency towards the ungrateful/understanding. I also can't stand the showboating nature of people wanting attention either.

Anyway, I think even if it's small...it's something and the gesture is still important. Not everyone is capable of dishing out $100,000 or $1,000,000. Sometimes $5 is like a $100 to a person. Don't demean a contribution.

Yes, there are a lot of worthwhile causes. What one would you donate to? Guaranteed there would be thousands of people that would disagree and say that THEIR cause is more worthwhile. People donate to a lot of causes. You can't give to them all. So, each one gets a some from a lot of people that feel it's a worthwhile cause.

It's hard to take basic reviews serious when things like this can happen, paid reviews, etc.. That's why I visit forums like this and get real input from people I trust and aren't shills (except for that one guy... Ur_Mom. He's just a prick shill). Just some places are too easy to manipulate.
 
Positive reviews for donating to Notre Dame reconstruction efforts are off-topic as they aren't about the core game experience. Steam should be censoring them.

I sent them a Steam support ticket about it.


"Hello,

Steam has announced a new policy regarding user reviews for games that are considered "off-topic".

Assassin's Creed Unity is currently receiving a review bomb where people are writing positive reviews because AC Unity is being given away for free and because it features the Notre Dame cathedral, and because Ubisoft are donating 500,000 Euros to reconstruction efforts of Notre Dame.

Since none of these reviews are on-topic to the game itself, they should be omitted from the Steam store page review score, per Steam's new policy on off-topic reviews.

Just a heads up. I know how much Steam cares about following its rules."
