Hello,

So started the Dban software and began the Nuke, it would literally take days to erase everything securely.

Then, I started a Full format of my HDD through windows, later to read that it is useless and it's just scanning for errors opposed to the quick format.

Is there any other free software out there that can secure my drive and take less that 15 hours?

Thanks!

Unfortunately it takes a long time to flip 6tb of bits to zeros, no way around that. A single pass wipe will be the fastest, mostly secure option. I believe the "quick" option in dban does this.

IMHO start it now and just let it run as long as you can. Odds of recovering anything, even if it only makes it 1/2 way, seems pretty slim without some serious know how.

So which option? The Gutmann Wipe was going to take probably over 3 days.

Quick erase.

The gutmann wipe is based on a misinterpretation of a paper written 25 years ago about very different hard drive technology.

Like Ryan said, Quick erase. It does a full zero wipe, unlike the windows quick erase.

Probably too late for this HD but one thing I have done is do what erasing/wiping I want to do, then install a version of Linux. Not a real security measure but might convince the buyer there isn't anything worth looking for on that HD.

Just copying/multiplicating a big (unimportant, maybe some movie) file to fill up the drive (in one partition that spans the full drive) would be enough if you have the time to wait it up. Simple calc results in about 10 hours to finish for 6TB.
