You've decided to cut the cord because cable prices are just too high? It looks like content providers are retaking control of their content, buying out online media services, and pushing the price back up. YouTube TV prices are scheduled to raise to $50.00 a month, although this is offset by the inclusion of the channels owned by the Discovery network and the future inclusion of the Oprah Winfrey Network.

Disney recently acquired enough Hulu shares to make it the majority (60%) owner of that service, and is looking to buy AT&T's 10% oownership. Although Hulu with no ads is still $12.00 a month, Hulu with live TV is $51.00.

Is internet delivery the new cable? It's hard to say, but even if it doesn't sound like a duck, it is starting to walk like a duck.

EDIT: Corrected to change name from YouTube Premium to YouTube TV, my thanks to people who caught that mistake.

Yeah, no reason to ditch my satellite any more with all these companies raising their prices to what cable/satellite is. DirecTV Now and now Youtube. I won't pay them that much to stream and have to use my internet. No thanks. When I can pay about the same and get it another way without slowing my internet down.

Is it the new cable? Yes and no. There are a ton of good quality options are various price points if you want Live TV. It is a market with real competition versus the local monopoly system of traditional cable. Prices going up is, unfortunately, inevitable. Its a better system than traditional cable but it is still run by megacorps that answer to shareholders so they will keep raising prices as long as they can get away with it. Unlike traditional cable Live TV, services are easy to cancel if you don't like the options so you can try out another one without insanely priced set up fees or additional fees for set top boxes, etc. It is definitely the trend that things are heading towards, but it will not be free of a lot of the bullshit that happens on the cable side of things.

I was kind of pissed that YouTube TV increased its price but it is still cheaper than cable. It is my only streaming service as it has all of the content I was watching on cable before but now I can record as many shows as I want at once with unlimited space. PS Vue is the same price (for the channels I watch) so there is no reason to switch.

All these service will cost as much as regular cable and satellite before it is said and done. They don't get what made them popular to begin with. Oh well, ahoy matey!

Ditch cable because it's too expensive.
Go to streaming services and find that the a la carte pricing adds up to more than you paid for cable.
Also, you still have your internet bill which is cheaper when bundled with cable.

And there's still nothing to watch!

All depends on what you watch and how much you want to subscribe to. I'm paying $30 a month for Sling and that package would be like $100+ from any cable or sat service I can get here and I'd be paying for a hell of a lot more channels I'd never watch than I do with Sling. Even with bundle discounts Sling + Internet is still cheaper than Internet + Cable. And I can cancel Sling any time I want without having to deal with calling anyone and putting up with all the "are you sure you want to cancel" crap from CSRs.

The only thing people need to watch live are sports and national announcements/emergencies.
Live TV is for some older people that can't be bothered with navigating through apps on Roku.

Only reason i had TV before was to watch Racing sports. Never really got too invested in anything else much as it was mostly not interesting, and if i somehow did find some movie or shows i liked i'd usually buy it on DVD or Blu-Ray eventually.
Ditched Cable 2-3 years ago and not missing it. Can watch my races on Youtube a few days later as someone will usually upload it by then. Don't usually get to watch it live unless i can find it on the net but not really anything to worry about.
Just have Internet and Netflix/Amazon Prime TV atm, and that takes care of a large portion of what i'd be interested in watching for about $55 a month. (Also have Kodi on on my Fire TV box if i want to use that)
Considered Youtube TV, but not if they are raising prices. Probably would end up not watching much TV anyhow even if i did get it. lol

Fun note: using YoutubeTV + PIhole. Unfortunately, it does not look like you can block live tv ads, but you can have some success blocking ads in recorded dvr content. It's unfortunately a cat and mouse game, but it is definitely interesting that you can block ads via ethernet.
At the end of the day, I think it was easier in the tvio days where it would block ads on recorded content.
Oh well, there's literally nothing on tv. Wish my folks would stop watching that crap.

Just stop watching TV altogether. It is only a bunch of remakes and mixing of two ideas into one show that has been seen before.

I'll keep downloading my Linux ISO's thanks.
Yeah, pay 5-10 a month for a VPN, steal everything as a means of protest. Let those who can't say no foot the bill. And no I'm not being sarcastic.

The moment it cost more a year to watch TV than the TV cost, unless you go extremely high end, cable companies became a lost cause.

Protest my ass.

I have Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Linux ISO's for everything else. I cut cable about five years ago after I stopped caring about major sports.

YouTube TV is definitely the best of the live TV streaming options but yeah prices are creeping up too much...people are cutting the cord to save $$...if prices are almost the same then I'd rather just keep traditional cable TV...I'm still using FiOS but have been looking into potential alternatives for the future...seems like YouTube TV and DirectTV Now are the best options as far as picture quality and channel selections

If you can get a good price on a cable bundle it really is the better way to go instead of streaming and that is likely to remain the same for a few more years until more services get things figured out.

Cable is rape in Canada sir.

Its pretty shitty in the US too, but piracy really isn't protesting. Protesting requires commitment and sacrifice, it also needs to be done in an effective way that sends the right message. Piracy NEVER sends any message any than "I want to steal your shit". You can never effectively protest with piracy.

Supply and demand - is not just about providing something at any price. It means providing it at a price that the consumer is willing to pay. If a significant chunk of customers are not willing to pay the price then supply and demand does not intersect. It's not that they are not interested in the product.

Also I don't know why content owners refuse to heed the lessons taught by steam. That if you provide a better service than piracy people will be willing to pay. But not while you provide a shitty DRM filled experience with a completely useless browser bound player. As long as your service is literally worse than piracy, the price is completely irrelevant.

We should be at the stage where you´re able to pick which channels you want for say a buck a month each.

This is also a good way to weed out those bake off type bottom feeders that get added to packages.
There should be no adds on cable, you are already paying, that and product placement easily covers it.
Remember when the cinema never used to have adds, just the, go get your popcorn, now you have to sit through 20mins or more before the movie starts.

Netflix, Prime Video and Youtube Red for me. That's $40-$50 a month right there.

I can't imagine picking up any more subs.

That’s beyond stupid.

You mean YouTube TV though, YouTube premium is a different service.

This. OP might want to change the title, as they are not the same service. I have YT Red (now YT premium), but have no reason to sub to YT TV. My YT premium also comes with Google Music.

My YouTube TV + Philo is still lower than cable.. but I'm sure more price hikes are in the future. This will definitely result in a evaluation on what we watch in our household and look for alternative sources.

This price hike definitely has Reddit in an uproar; cause this rate increase is for all customers.. even those grandfathered in the $35 initial offering.
Another BS component of this is the media companies force the distributors hands.. Discovery's deal with YTTV isn't just by offering it as an add-on.. They don't make the agreement unless Youtube bundles it in with the primary package. All just so Discovery can report to shareholders and claim subscriber numbers went up so much in the previous quarter. Guarantee you if YouTube just offered it in a separate $10 add-on, the numbers wouldn't be so great.

If that's why you're switching, then you're doing it 100% wrong. Trying to rebuild the same linear TV experience that your cable provider offers doesn't make sense. The entire reason for dropping it is because you're stuck in a massive bundle that you don't have control over what content is added to the bundle, so you end up having to pay for a ton of things you don't need. If you want HBO, go buy HBO as a stand alone option. If you want car shows, look no further than MotorTrend on Demand. Maybe there's a show that you can't find the channel that it's on without picking up 10 other channels. Cruise Amazon, Apple, Walmart, etc to see if you can just buy the complete season either online or on disc. Most shows you can simply buy the entire season for like $30, which means you could get HBO, MTOD, and buy a new season every month of the year (12 different shows) and still only pay about $50 a month. The best part is that you can just pay for it all in one place like Amazon, and all of your content can be accessed through it. All of it is on demand content, no ads, no having to record shows from a linear channel or having to watch it when it's offered.

Still better than cable cause I can cancel at anytime. I'm gonna sign up to HBO for GoT then immediately cancel after the 2nd month without having to deal with contracts.

9 companies own a majority of the channels. This is the ultimate reason why there will never be true "a la carte" television

I ditched cable a few years ago because it was over$150 a month for cable, phone, internet. Just do internet now for like $70, plus Netflix and Hulu. And then kids wanted Direct TV so they could watch sports, which was $35 a month, then went up to $40 when ATT bought them, and is now going up to $50 "because content is expensive." So now I spend like $150 a month again between all the services. But I can just drop them whenever I want.

I just got an email from youtube tv today "you asked, we listened" Not sure what I asked for

I had YouTube TV for a while and finally ditched it last month. I just could not stand the fricking ads. They were long and repetitive.
