amd dropped prices BIG time today and there 290's cost under 300 should i get one or go gtx 970

ez, 970.

Faster, cooler, quiter, far less power draw. ~$50 difference is well worth it.

Even after the price drop, spend a little extra for the 970; it's worth it. I doubt AMD is going to do another price drop for a while, so only go with a 290 if you can get it really cheap/used and good condition for ~$270.

+1 for the 970. The 970 is all-around better. As cheap as it is new, I'd really be hard pressed not to get it even if I saw a 290 for sale pretty cheap just due to how much cooler and efficient the 970 would be for me in the long run.

What resolution? What games? Current rig? Are you picky about framerates? Need more details..

How would answering any of those questions change the recommendation for a 970?

Multi-monitor setup or 1440p and above means you want max gpu power. 1080p but demand 60 fps means you want max gpu power. If he games at 1080p or below and is not picky about framerate the Radeon would suffice and be cheaper.

Nope. GTX 970 handily beats the 290 in almost all cases uptil 4K resolution.
290 is an irrelevant card.

Does the 970 come with free games?

It doesn't need to - its $329 for the best price/performance GPU on the market. Not exactly having trouble selling without free game gimmicks, seeing as they're sold out everywhere, and go OOS the moment stock comes in.

Need to? Who said anything but yourself about it needing to? If the OP does not have the games that are selling with the 290 and is going to buy them, the 970 automatically becomes more expensive by the cost of the games plus the initial price difference.

Selling free games is not a gimmick unless the games were crap. Oh well, I guess NVidia relies on gimmicks as well since they sell extras with their cards as well. The 290 is very relevant by the way and good luck with pushing 1080p 60fps in all games, all eye candy on that 970.

I would buy the 970 for the reasons listed above, no brainer.

Maxwell actually aged well compared to Kepler. Back in the day, the GTX 970 was neck and neck with the R9 390. By my estimates, team red is about 10-15% ahead now.

Interesting Necro! Both were great cards, I bought the 290 and a buddy of mine ended up with a 970. The 290 was the last card I've had with team red!

try playing some '04 games ( farcry - doom 3 - HL2 ) on a GPU released back in '99 - GL HF

I went for the Sapphire Tri X R9 290. Quietest GPU I have owned. It got retired back in 2016, but it is still being used today in a 2nd PC powering a 4k freesync monitor.

I got the R9 290 for early 4k gaming, primarily ARMA 2 and other older CPU heavy games. In newer games it is crushed at 4k (no surprise).
