This post will be updated throughout the event.
Last year the team finished in 6th place over all.
Last year's thread (2018) - https://hardforum.com/threads/9th-annual-boinc-pentathlon-hosted-by-seti-germany.1957969/
2 years ago (2017) - https://hardforum.com/threads/8th-annual-boinc-pentathlon-by-seti-germany.1929308/

5/5 - 5/19 - SETI.Germany's BOINC Pentathlon - https://www.seti-germany.de/boinc_pentathlon/ -

2019

  1. New discipline: Javelin Throw. This discipline consists of five not necessarily consecutive days. Credits are counted for each day separately, and the rankings are based on each team's third best day. Javelin Throw replaces Swimming.
  2. While the choice of projects for the disciplines is still based on the teams' suggestions, it will be more flexible in order to avoid that the most popular project is automatically chosen for the shortest discipline. In any case, Sprint and Javelin Throw will happen at projects that provide workunits with a quorum of 1, and there will be only one discipline at a GPU project.
  3. This year's Marathon takes place at a subproject of the World Community Grid chosen by the project administrators. Hence, the World Community Grid and its subprojects are not available for the other disciplines.
The BOINC Pentathlon consists of 5 disciplines:

  1. Marathon (14 days)
    • Open Zika is the sub project chosen. This means you need to go into your WCG settings and limit your work unit selection to only pull Open Zika work.
    • If anyone wants to crunch for us anonymously for any reason, attach a computer to the account without using the BOINC Manager.
To do so, install BOINC, create a file named account_www.worldcommunitgrid.org.xml in the BOINC data directory, and set its contents to:
      <account>
      <master_url>www.worldcommunitygrid.org</master_url>
      <authenticator>943687_dd7504d11eb9dd987306ba050e0dfa35</authenticator>
      </account>
This will run your clients on our HardOCPtest account.
  2. Sprint (3 days)
    • LHC@home
    • 16 May 2019, 0.00 (UTC) and
      19 May 2019, 0.00 (UTC
  3. City Run (5 days)
    • YoYo@home
    • 06 May 2019, 0.00 (UTC) through 11 May 2019, 0.00 ( UTC
  4. Cross Country (5 days)
    • Einstein@home
    • 11 May 2019, 0.00 (UTC) and
      16 May 2019, 0.00 ( UTC)
  5. Javelin Throw (5 x 1 day, only each team's third best daily score counts)
    • NFS@home
    • Javelin Throw starts at
06 May 2019, 0.00 (UTC) and ends at
      07 May 2019, 0.00 (UTC)
    • 09 May 2019, 0.00 (UTC) and ends at
      10 May 2019, 0.00 (UTC)
    • 13 May 2019, 0.00 (UTC) and ends at
      14 May 2019, 0.00 (UTC).
    • 15 May 2019, 0.00 (UTC) and ends at
      16 May 2019, 0.00 (UTC).
    • 17 May 2019 00:00 UTC and ends at
      18 May 2019 00:00 UTC
Each team may cast four votes for projects from the preselection below while signing up. These votes will be taken into account for the final project choice. However, only one discipline can take place at a GPU project, and only projects that provide workunits with a quorum of 1 can be chosen for Sprint and Javelin Throw. The projects chosen for the Pentathlon will therefore not necessarily be the four projects with the most votes.

Quorum CPU GPU
Quorum 1 Cosmology@Home
LHC@home
NFS@Home
SRBase
YAFU
yoyo@home
Collatz Conjecture
Quorum 2 Amicable Numbers*
RakeSearch
Einstein@Home
SETI@home
*: Amicable Numbers is listed as a CPU project this year, because the GPU application is relatively inefficient and uses very much CPU time at the moment.

Projects are not eligible if they

  • were chosen in last year's Pentathlon (Asteroids@home, NumberFields@home, PrimeGrid, Rosetta@home, Universe@Home)
  • cannot provide a sufficient number of workunits
  • do not support at least Windows and Linux
  • provide non-CPU-intensive (NCI) applications
  • use buggy or test-only applications
  • do not allow the creation of new accounts
  • do not support WebRPC
To keep it as transparent as possible, we will publish the suggestions of every team when announcing the final project.

Only the statistics on https://www.setigermany.de/boinc_pentathlon/statistiken/pentathlon.php are considered to award points and choose the champions. They are based on data provided by the projects via WebRPC and are updated every hour. For the Marathon, the hourly updates are based on incremental updates provided by World Community Grid in addition to their daily updates.

A race day will start and end at 0:00 UTC (also known as GMT).

If a project's server is unreachable at the starting time of a discipline or at the beginning of a day of Javelin Throw, only credits granted after the first successful statistics update will be counted. Likewise, the last successful statistics update will be the final result, if the server is unreachable at the ending time of the discipline or the end of the day, respectively.

We are now 1 month away from the largest and greatest of the challenges in BOINC distributed computing. Anyone and everyone should be preparing for this event now. If you need to learn how to set up BOINC or how to run a project that uses Virtualbox, this is the time to get it set up, dialed in, and rolling strong. Ask lots of questions early and don't put it off. Some things have a greater learning curve. I will be posting links and tips to assist but some people find all the resources daunting. We are willing to walk you through it if you merely ask. The biggest of the big show up for this event. So, every core, every thread, every GPU, every tablet, every phone matters. There is no such thing as too little. We need every cycle we can get. Even if it is old school and inefficient. Fire it up for the 2 weeks or for whatever you can spare.

This post will also be updated throughout the event.

Marathon project will be one of the sub-projects for WCG.

For someone who just want to participate for the duration of the event and not tinkering with hardware and switching projects frequently, this is a very good choice. Basically set and forget.

Well...make sure to run with a cache though because depending on timing, work units may get vacuumed up quick.

A new event Javelin Throw replaces Swimming.

  1. New discipline: Javelin Throw. This discipline consists of five not necessarily consecutive days. Credits are counted for each day separately, and the rankings are based on each team's third best day. Javelin Throw replaces Swimming.

Javelin Throw (5 x 1 day, only each team's third best daily score counts)
  • CPU or GPU project with a quorum of 1

This is how I understand: A CPU or GPU project with quorum 1 is selected for Javelin.

Date announced: _____4_____7_____8_____11_____14
Credits granted: ___ 2.5M___5.1M__4.3M__0.6M___0.3M

From the above table, the team's third best day is on the 4th with 2.5M credit. This credit is then compare to other teams and then ranked accordingly.

OK everyone. Please post in this thread what projects you would like us to vote for. I need 4 from the list in the first post of this thread. I will try and be democratic about it so don't delay. I plan on signing us up n the 15th. So, this should give everyone a week to cast their stones.

Collatz, Rakesearch, NFS and Yoyo.

Well, since I am guessing the requirement of "cannot provide a sufficient number of workunits" will probably apply to most projects on the list (*cough* Rakesearch *cough*), I'll just go selfishly off those I don't have many points in yet.

Cosmology@Home
LHC@home
SRBase
YAFU

Seti would meet my criteria too, so I'd be fine with it as well.

I will try and get us signed up sometime today. So, if anyone else has votes on our selection choice, please chime in quick.

atp1916 changed his PG vote to SETI. So, that means the numbers are

Collatz – 6

YAFU – 3

RakeSearch – 1

NFS – 4

YoYo – 4

Amicable Numbers – 3

Cosmology – 1

LHC – 1

SRBase – 1

Einstein – 1

SETI – 1

With those numbers we get Collatz, NFS, YoYo and then I have to tie break the last one with my voting. I'm going to go with Amicable Numbers, SETI, Einstein, and Cosmology as my choices. So, that means the team picks will be

Collatz
NFS
YoYo
Amicable Numbers

WCG gets to pick the Marathon sub-project. Pretty cool! Correct me if I am mistaken, but only Mapping Cancer Markers requires a wingman. Some of those have pretty short deadlines, so bunkering can be challenging for MCM. Javelin will be announced 3 days prior to the start, and always starts at 00:00UTC. Gonna be hair pulling fun!

OZ was selected for City run two years ago. Will the organizer choose this again? HTSB and MCM require wingman. I dunno on FAAH.

The only sub-project that is way behind in term of % project completion is MIP. Well MCM never see an end to it since it was launched in 2013.

Well, what's gonna be? Will know in less than 20 hours!

All WCG sub projects are CPU only right now. Thanks for checking in workshop35
Deadlines should be as far out as 10 days ChristianVirtual unless you get a resend. Being that you can use phones/tablets with OZ, they have to keep deadlines maximum.

On cell phones...I see anywhere from 3 to 20 hours. Most probably closest to the 18 hour mark.
On CPU, I want to say like 2-4 hours approximately.

And here I was at 49 years 341 days of run time from mostly cell phones on OZ....lol.

Thats pretty impressive!

I am at 1y210d and I don't even remember running it... maybe in passing, but never selected on purpose.

Howdy, strangers. I haven't been around these parts in a long while. I've got my daily up and running and I'll see what else I can fire up, I've still got a 4P set up in the basement, now let's see if she'll boot.

Welcome back KMac ; great to have you back; just in time for the Pentathlon. Every core counts.

Welcome NotoriousLeoT . If you have any questions, feel free to ask. There is a ton of information to take in if you aren't familiar already. Would be glad to have you on board.

I added 20 more ARM cores today. Got more to come but needs spots to store them. Just a matter of time...lol.

Added 16 more ARM cores tonight. I know it isn't much production but it is a lot more efficient...lol

And another 8 ARM cores added tonight. I really need to build my shelf for all these things...lol

NFS chosen for the Javelin Throw portion. NFS is RAM heavy. Up to 1GB per work unit. Keep this in mind if you are running the project.

YoYo@home announced as the City run
