Why would my unmanaged switch only get full speed after reboot?

I have an old TP-Link 8-port unamanged switch on my desk, connected to various devices. I'm usually able to copy at full speed, sending and receiving, at 110MB/s. Sometimes, I will notice the upload/send speed fluctuates a lot, between 0 and 100MB/s, going back and forth in between. Read speed is still fine, receiving at full speed. Unplugging and plugging the switch back in fixes the issue.

What can cause this behavior? Thanks.

Could be something to do with the end points themselves- one end isn't ready to receive, so there's a slowdown?

time for a new switch?

Yeah, this is one of the first signs of a dying switch, especially for the little (5/8 port) units.

But do check all your cabling, etc. first. A bad contact on the right wire, for instance, could easily cause drops and renegotiations in link speed.

Alot of those tplink have life time or very long warranties, if you bought it new you might double check. If not, they’re only about $25 for a new one on amzn

A common reason I see switch performance drop over time fixed by a reboot is some kind of loopback or broadcast storm happening. Once the switch cache/buffers fill it starts to perform terribly and they clear on a reboot.

Unplug from the switch any wires connected to devices you don't use very often. See if it still occurs.
