I will be building a system soon and was wondering which processor to go with, I narrowed my choices to the i5 9400f ot AMD 2600x I play Elderscrolls online pretty much all the time and really no other games I would like to stream and also record game play for uploading to YouTube Thanks for any advice in advance.

If you are streaming while playing new AAA games, it's better to have 12 threads over 6.

But otherwise, the i5 9400 is about 20-25% faster in most games.

EDIT: never mind, the game uses the same dual core as Skyrim, so if you are limited by your current Core i5 quad core, you will probably be better going with the i5 6 core.

Game is single-threaded, so you will only see a performance increase over your current 4.5 GHz Core i5 if you get a 9600K series and overclock to 5.0. And the best you will see is 30% performance improvement.

You can't just use a fast 6 core, the turbo speeds of the i5 9400 is lower than your current overclock. You';re going to have to go all-out on Intel overclocking.

Did you read ANY of my post above, before you just went cheer-leading?

The engine here is the same as that on Skyrim (single core), which means he will not benefit from having more threads that run at slower speed.

He already has a 4690K at 4.5 ghz, so the 2600x would be a step backwards (in single-thread). Can you prove to me in any way, shape or form that encoding h.264 video in real time would take more than 5 spare cores?

you used info from 2014....
eso got updated to multi-core last summer and there was no cheer leading going on.

Understood, then 2600x!

I was a bit confused because the Reddit post was from last year, and the engine was still single-threaded :D

Next time, maybe share that information with the rest of the class?

I'd go for the 2600X since you want to stream. But it'll almost be a side-grade honestly.

Personally, I like the flexibility of AM4 vs. the lack thereof with Intel. If it was a matter of dropping in a 9400 into your existing board, I'd say just do that...but you can't. You can use the 2600x for a year or two and have upgrade options with AM4 whether that be Zen2 or whatever.

The 7nm Ryzen will be able to drop into the current AM4 boards. So that’s a plus with the 2600x.

The 2700x has two extra cores and a useful stock heatsink (don’t have to spend extra on proper cooling) if you can swing it. I know streamers that have good looking streams encoded off a 2700x w/ camera.
