Hey guys, I need some quick thoughts on which GPU to choose to drive a freesync2 display. This is for my father (non-gamer) who recently bought aultrawide LG 49" with 144hz/Freesync2. He's currently using the onboard video and only driving it at 60hz. I built this system a number of years ago, I think it has a 450/500w power supply. No need for a 2080TI, but I know 20 series Nvidias now support freesync but I'm not up to speed on AMD's current offerings. Looking for some ideas, cheaper the better. Thanks!

Is there a specific issue that makes you think it requires freesync?

Just asking as you stated he doesn't game.

I personally think it's worth going to 144hz just for the desktop experience (smooth mouse/window movements). Seems like a waste of a good monitor.

If you're dad is not gaming, that RX 560 would be fine.

I was using an RX 460 (very similar) for a bit on an HTPC and I was happy with it for general PC usage.

It could even game with some older titles like Half-Life 2 or Left4Dead, but it was a stretch for anything newer.

Should be a fine choice. Just note that FreeSync is mainly for playing games, I don't think it does anything on the desktop.

Are you set on buying new? There are a lot of RX580's floating around for sub-$120 that would give you a lot of bang for the buck.
