Bitcoin is up almost 20% today, along with most of the major coins making gains as well. Aparently there is some 20,000 BTC order across multiple exchanges responsible for this latest hike.

"Today's gain was probably triggered by an order worth about $100 million spread across U.S.-based exchanges Coinbase and Kraken and Luxembourg's Bitstamp, said Oliver von Landsberg-Sadie, chief executive of cryptocurrency firm BCB Group."

Oh no. Please for the love of great odin's toenails don't drive GPU prices up again. I'm still sitting on a 290 that I overpaid for during a bitcoin craze I guess in late 2013 or 2014.. I was ready to buy a 1080 a year or two ago but then price shot through the roof again. Now once again I'm just sitting around to see what AMD has on the table..

Prices are already bad enough when a 2080 is $700 minimum. I'm going to have to moonlight just to afford a mid range graphics card upgrade.

You can always get a 1080ti for around 500-520 used. Unless theres something you specifically want in the 2080

I don't really want a 2080, can't afford it, just using it to make my point.

$500 is in insanely high budget for me even for a new card, let alone a used one with no warranty. I believe the 1080 had a $499 msrp and some good deals were happening in late 2017 before everything went haywire. I wasn't happy about considering nearly $500 for a single GPU but was close to doing it.

Yeah 500 is a good chunk of change. You can get a used 1080 for about 325 now, or even a 980ti for 210. Theres a bunch on the FS/T board, keep an eye open when you're ready to make the jump.

I've been noticing the 980 Tis for barely $200 now. I'm very tempted. I mostly only play older games or things like CS:GO or Borderlands but I do have some games like Dark Souls 3 and Dragon Quest XI that completely crush the 290 now even at 1080P. The only reason I'm waiting now is to see if AMD can bring something to the table that will bring 1080 Ti level performance down to a reasonable price for me. I do have a 4k monitor and think the 1080Ti would be nice (I don't require ultra settings).

I don't really see that level of performance dropping to $300 this year though.. but one can hope.

They can't even get consistent 1080ti performance for an unreasonable price currently.

Is this a reference to the Radeon VII ? I'm a bit behind the times. I figure the 1080 Ti, 2080, and Radeon VII would be the only cards in that performance class. All a bit too expensive for me.

Volatile crypto-currency market is volatile.

Oddly enough I was going to post this EXACT thing. This is definitely my take on it. Then again my opinion doesnt really matter as I am so risk averse I would never touch bitcoin 'investing'.

My advice to anyone still holding Bitcoin (or any other cryptocurrency): Now is the time to sell. Do it right meow before it tanks again.

In that case, don't look at AMD stock, it was $1.76 back in 2015 :(

And AMD actually builds something of economic value. Even the Dutch Tulip mania had some underlying value.

But crypto-coins have no base value, nothing of value is actually being produced. It's a house of cards built on air.

Dude you trying to remind me about that too. was looking back then, and this last $16 dollar price I was eyeing it, but I got no balls.

I looked at it a few times with the idea of purchasing a few thousand shares but in each case I ended up purchasing a safer stock..

Haha that's just 20/20 hindsight. Nobody knew about the consortium deal (see 4/22/2016); but once it happened - whew.
We were still a long way from seeing performance numbers, but in terms of positive sentiment, it was a massive boost.

During its peak I mined with my two gaming pcs and in a few months the profit bought me a sound card and a new monitor. Didn't get millions but was fun while it lasted

Still mining when I'm not using my GPU's for gaming.

I have nothing to lose.
