Assassins Creed 3: American Revolution

I'm surprised they never bothered to patch in any kind of performance boost or DX11 toggles. Like most of their other games, seems UBI only "patches" something when new DLC hits.

This is why I haven't played past Boston

At this point, I'm wondering if there are even plans to patch the game for performance. On paper the framerates don't seem that bad since most sites just post an average instead of noting 120+fps mysteriously drops to 40fps at the drop of a hat.

Ubisoft has announced that they will release The Tyranny of King Washington on February 19th...'The Infamy' is the first episode of a three-part DLC series exploring an alternate reality in which George Washington goes mad with unlimited power, foregoing Presidency to rule as tyrannical King...in this alternate world, Connor has never become an Assassin and must endure new trials, acquiring the skills he'll need to take down a possessed Washington and win freedom for his land once and for all

the DLC is available through the Assassin's Creed III Season Pass or can be purchased as a single DLC pack for 800 Microsoft points...following The Infamy, The Tyranny of King Washington will continue in two additional content packs...the King Washington DLC is the only reason why I purchased the Season Pass...hopefully it will be good

here's the official trailer...

Believe it or not you can thank the consoles and their fees charged to developers and sometimes long waiting periods for the certification process. They make it nowhere near as easy as Steam does for PC titles - in fact Steam does not charge developers to issue a patch, unlike Microsoft and its rumored $40,000 for any patches beyond an initial complementary one.

So some developers have just gotten in the habit of delaying the PC update and then updating all platforms as close to the same time as possible, even if the PC patch is immediately available. DICE is an example of this, with BF3 -- they've mostly only issued a patch when a new DLC became available. Frustrating as hell when so much shit is broken with the game.

As an example of a dev who DOESNT do this -- Gearbox will issue PC patches much sooner for Borderlands 2. Ofcourse this has the unique effect of sprouting all kinds of console kiddie rage threads - you have no idea. Another reason some devs delay their PC patch, to avoid more whining than necessary.

That actually sounds really cool, and makes me want this game more but the Deluxe edition is going to have to come WAY down from $80 before I bite. Maybe it'll go on sale during the Spring Sale. I'd like to play this now, but like with FC3 and Hitman, massive backlog means I can afford to wait for a better deal..

After going on a 2 month Dark Souls bender I went back to this game and found that most of the framerate issues seem to have been more or less fixed. DX11 effects still affect the framerate a little, but it doesn't seem to be as drastic or sudden. Things like the smoke coming from fish vendors no longer drop your FPS by 30% out of the blue.
Not sure if it's because the game has been patched a couple times or because Nvidia drivers have improved, but the experience is certainly better now.

I'm only a few hours in but good god the main character is boring as hell, as is the story... hope it gets more interesting soon.

I got this game free with my video card and it doesn't run great, all settings high and low seem to give about the same frame-rate 0_o, but it does look nice...

I guess it depends how far into the game you are, but it'll definitely change! The story definitely isn't as interesting as previous versions, but the extra details are nice. Some of the side quests involve debunking legends like Sleepy Hollow and the commentary written by your British sidekick is funny as hell.

Won the game last night. While the production values were nice, the side missions were all completely disconnected from the main story...and all they net you are some alternate costumes. I found that a little disappointing.
The end itself might be the biggest WTF moment I've had in a while. Not the story, but the fact that they make you sit through 20 full minutes of unskippable credits to finally conclude things.

I thought the story was the second best one behind AC2...and even then it's close

I gotta get around to playing the Tyranny of King Washington DLC soon which was included as part of the Season Pass...since it's a 3 part DLC I might just wait for all 3 to be released before starting it

Did you finish the peg leg missions? You get a nice prize for that plus the side missions you unlock were pretty fun. The hard part is just getting all of the trinkets but pretty easy if you just buy the map.

I did...and all I appeared to get was the Captain Kidd outfit. I know they showed you getting a relic, but I never actually noticed that it did anything. Does it?

Bullets bounce off of you like Superman

Go figure. Thinking about it, I don't think that anyone shot at me between getting that relic and completing the game. That (and the last Homestead missions) was pretty much the final thing I ended up completing.
I never did do any of the goods and services stuff as I hated the UI and always had a ton of money anyway. Ditto for most of the Assassin missions. I sent some of my guys on a few of those quests, but they never gave me anything worthwhile and I just stopped bothering.

I had the most fun with the hunting lodge and brawlers quests, which didn't really seem to net you anything even if they were enjoyable.

Yeah, no doubt most of the side quests are forgettable or just feel like filler.

You can unlock "cheats" after you beat the game. There is a new game where you try to triangulate points. You can unlock things like "no reloading for guns" which obviously makes them much more deadly. Not sure what else. Can't say I cared to play that long afterwards.

Man this game runs really bad on my hardware. One second I'm at 120 fps then I look across the city and I'm at 22 fps. Then I hit "E" to pet a dog and I'm at 90 fps. Walk into a crowd of people and I'm at 50 fps; turn a little to the right onto an almost empty area and I'm at 22 fps. Graphics settings don't seem to matter at all. All low or all high it's within 3 - 5 fps.

Are there some tweaks for this title?

Unfortunately, not really. There are some oddball ways to totally disable DX11 involving using the multiplayer config file for the normal game, but it screwed my game up the one time I tried it. Ubisoft delayed the game by a month to add DX11 effects to the game and apparently they forgot to optimize them. I bet if you check when your FPS drop, there's almost always some kind of smoke, fog, or weather effect on screen.
Normally it wouldn't be so noticeable if the game didn't go from literally 100+ FPS to about 50 in the blink of an eye. Recent driver updates and patches have helped, but there aren't any full-on fixes.

I fount that dropping 'environmental quality' from Vhigh to High cleared up most of my problems with FPS drops. It might be bugged actually, and their is only a draw distance difference between those settings.

I didn't like AC3.

Yet I just bought AC4 at GMG, enticed by a 27% off voucher.

Oh, GMG. You know me too well... #weakpound4win

While we're at it, AC3 is still on sale on Steam for $11.99 as part of Mid-week Madness...

Saw a commercial for Black Sail or w/e.

Unfortunately it looked a loooot like an AC game instead of a new Pirate thing. Time will tell; i really hope they flesh out the pirate life with crew management, ship management, free roaming etc.

Pretty sure it's free roam, that's how you get around. It's already been stated that the whole map is open from the get go IIRC.

I hope they get the controls/control layout right this time. That was always one of the main problems I had with the game series.

Did this game's mythology totally fail or something? Ezio had like a zillion games, but the fourth installment features an entirely new character and setting (which both look like shit).

Umm, AC4 is connected to AC3, if you played it you'd know who the main character is....

The Remastered version came out last Friday. It's free for everyone who owns the Season Pass for Odyssey, so check your game list in Uplay if you do.

I actually ended up really liking AC3. It was a nice change after powering through 2 + Brotherhood + Revelations, and I really enjoyed all of the throwbacks to the American Revolution (historical figures, events, tie-ins, etc.).

I'll have to check out the remaster and what it offers to see if it's worth picking up (I don't own Odyssey yet). These games are typically a pretty big time commitment but since I more or less did a complete playthrough of the original game, it might be fun to pick up the remaster and do a quick run through the main story.

AC3 wasn't horrible. I mainly just remember Connor being a lousy main character and some of the RPG mechanics (and sailing) being somewhat half baked. Black Flag fixed most of the issues with the game.

I never played it originally, but I'm going to just to finish out Desmond's story. Black Flag was a lot of fun, though. I read that there was a conflict within the team about the ship sailing in AC3 because they didn't want to make Connor into a pirate, and it turned out to be everyone's favorite part of the game.

Overall I think the technical and mechanics updates to AC3 Remastered (and AC Liberation Remastered) are great and worthwhile. Both games were overall quite enjoyable and were solid entries in the "older style AC" titles. I especially liked the tie-in to the then current year 2012 calamity plotline and Desmond's overall life, though I do NOT like how it ended (now that I know it was not the original intention of the devs; there was a different storyline they wanted to go with but was deemed - even in the 2013 era way before this current act of political polarization in video games - to be way too real world political and have too much of a message. A pity, given what I've read about what some of those storylines were planned to be, though a few of them would be given new life in other ways such as AC Rogue, but without the "real world" thematic elements as strongly present).

Back to AC3 Remastered... Some of the technical and mechanical improvements have, from what I've read, fixed some of the game's original mechanics in saling and the RPG progression style etc... from their half-baked status originally. This is fantastic and I'm glad the Remasters (for both titles) weren't just visual; they added a lot of new mechanics, UI stuff, and balance changes.

What I really wish they would have done is edited the story with a few retcons. I've been generally a fan of the game series since its early releases, but few titles really felt "wrong" to me in the main storylines the way that AC3 does with Connor and especially his relationship to Haytham. Connor appears foolishly dogmatic without any real reason to be where Haytham (who has MUCH more reason to be inflexible by the traditional narrative) is seen as reasonable. I really don't think the way the story ends between them "fits" at all , especilaly given what happened just a few missions before. I would have been WAY happier if they would have "fixed" that plot thread as with relatively few changes could the rest of the game continue as "normal" (ie Haytham is NOT the big bad final boss, he's NOT the one that Connor has a grudge against etc...). I'd go as far to say that if they remake other titles such as AC4: Black Flag and ESPECIALLY AC Rogue they should retcon Haytham's behavior (ie in Rogue if I recall his characterization is off compared to AC3), but the AC3 issue is really the biggest one. There have been some other "doesn't quite work, maybe" storylines (ie there's one at the end of Origins that...doesn't really seem as justified or as required as it is played, though admittedly the Hidden Ones DLC expansion helps with it a little), but AC3s Connor seems to be the worst protagonist I've found with many issues, with his last interactions with Haytham being the biggest issue of all.

Really wish they would have taken the time to go back and edit things a bit the way they did with other game mechanics and technology.

Having the AC: Odyssey Season Pass and getting this for free, I gotta say I'll probably pick it up and give it a whirl.

So I played through the first section of the game up to where Conor gets the suit and tools from Achilles and I really gotta work on the controls because its rather clunky for me. There is also not an actual stealth button and I’m taking quite a bit of damage in combat because I’m not hitting the E key to dodge or parry attacks. What throws me off the most is that I can’t really tell when I’m in stealth and I guess the assassinations are based on a certain distance? I cant really see without walking up close to a target then looking up to the side to see if I have the option to assassinate or not and then having to move closer. It’s definitely not fluid like in the later games.

lol noticed the same thing. after a hundred hours of AC:Odyssey this game makes me facepalm when it comes to a lot of things.

I think I’m going to change the difficulty to easy mode and try to speed run through the main missions just to finish it and get back to odyssey

It kinda amazes me that there is a "stealth" mode in a game. That seems counter-intuitive... can't you just... move slower, and out of their vision and constitute natural stealth?... seems more fun.
