I am trying to install xp x64 bit on my z97 board. The x86 will install fine, just as long as I put it on ide, but the x64 has kicked my butt.
I have used nlite and packaged just about every chipset driver that I know of, but it's a no go. Has anyone gotten the x64 bit to work on
a z97 board, and if so. What did you do? Maybe there is a step that I missed along the way. I have downloaded countless of so called working
iso's, but none worked. Can this be done, or should I stop now?

I'm not sure but I believe the 6 series boards were the last one to support XP.

Can you see the disk to select it during install? Which part during install is it failing?

Here the 10.1 drivers they said work back to XP, maybe the modded them. Maybe try them with a fresh ISO and integrate them. Extract the Wilecat Point INF and slipstream that.

No. It goes through installing all the drivers, and when it states starting setup. It just hangs there.
The link to the drivers you sent are for updating in windows, but I can't get windows to install to use them.

You extract the drivers and then using a program would slipstream them into the disc. If you can get the motherboard INF's to take then it should at least get to Windows.

Try disabling devices in the BIOS to see if one is causing the lockup, you can also enable the startup mode where you have to confirm each driver that loads...might help pinpoint which one is the culprit

Good point. Start with USB 3.0 controllers.

I have disabled everything that I could on the board, but it still hangs at starting windows setup.

WinXP 64-bit is essentially the same as Server 2003 64-bit at its core. You may be able to find more compatible drivers by searching the latter.

Is it necessary to install to bare metal? Installing to a virtual machine running on top of VMware, Hyper-V, etc. may work.

(Of course, there's the question: Holy hell, why XP 64-bit? No one wanted it when it was current.)

I still run xp. I have a lot of older games that we still play, but the games will only run on xp.
As far as the x64 bit deal. I just want to do it. I know it does not matter about the ram, but since I'm running
16gb, then I want to see all my 16gb, and I want the full speed from the ssd.

Run the games in a VM. If they are old enough to require XP, they will run really well in a VM.

Is this system connected to the internet? If I ran an xp system in this day in age I think it would stay offline for its entire life. Would be interesting to have an XP system just for games though! (ah the days before windows live :) )

BLASPHEMY...
I actually loved winxp 64bit. However it was really hard finding printer/scanner drivers on it because it was identified as a server windows exactly like you said.

False on so many levels, specifically if they require 3D rendering.

How am I wrong "on so many levels"? Please explain.

Looks like it does a satisfactory job rendering 3d here in this video..

Heres another one with the user explaining how to enable 3d rendering. He's even using XP.

It doesn't work for all games and the performance is crap unless it's an older 2D game. I've tried it several times.

Works fine for me. There’s a performance hit but not as bad as most people think. You also have to take into consideration that the hardware back in XP was a lot slower than even the most entry level hardware now. Making games (from that time period) run a lot better.

I have to agree. I tried a few times with no luck or poor performance for gaming. So my solution was to build a XP gaming rig using old hardware that you can find pretty cheap. I did not consider XP x64 since there would be issues with drivers. I loaded it with 3 gigs total ram. Two spinners, one for the boot drive, and a larger spinner for the games (500gb). I was able to load 24 games and still have over 200gb free. Works perfect.

I've run a bunch of old games in an XP and Win7 VM running inside of VMWare Workstation. SimCity 3000, for example. Seemed okay to me.

What game(s) are you trying to run? That might help in potential performance estimates.
