To deal with the 'challenges' of their business model, EA are going to be laying off up to 350 people today.

“Today we took some important steps as a company to address our challenges and prepare for the opportunities ahead,” Wilson wrote in his post. “As we look across a changing world around us, it’s clear that we must change with it. We’re making deliberate moves to better deliver on our commitments, refine our organization and meet the needs of our players.” - Andrew Wilson, CEO

Maybe they should take some "important steps" and remove the CEO that chose the bad direction as well?

maybe the sell half a game for full prices and then make rip thier wallets for tiny bitty parts of the remainder of the game was not that good an idea.
why didnt they fire the guy that came up with that model...

FIXED

How can this be be?
Shouldn't their "microtransactions for everyone" model allow them to buy the whole planet, by now?

I wonder how many millions in yearly bonuses the CEO gets while 350 people are now out of a job.

"As Chief Executive Officer at ELECTRONIC ARTS INC, ANDREW WILSON made $35,728,764 in total compensation. Of this total $1,141,731 was received as a salary, $2,500,000 was received as a bonus, $0 was received in stock options, $32,025,759 was awarded as stock and $61,274 came from other types of compensation."

So technically, he got a $2.5 million bonus last year.

Having worked in EA.....yes this is massive bullshit
"Stock price dropped a bit because we fucking suck at getting quality games out...no wait...that can't be the reason...it must be the employees fault further down the food chain...axe them"

I'm sure that EA devs have lots of better ideas, at least when they start at the studio (by the time they leave maybe their spirit is crushed), but that the higher-ups and execs don't let the teams pursue them:

Ex-Visceral employee calls the studio's closure 'a mercy killing'

The whole thing can be summed up in a statement given by a former developer on Ragtag, who compared the game Hennig and Visceral were trying to make with what EA was actually looking for. "She was giving these massive presentations on the story, themes,” the developer said. “EA executives are like, 'FIFA Ultimate Team makes a billion dollars a year. Where’s your version of that?'"

All the focus-group based development that EA does isn't a sign of a publisher with a vision. Free pizza and pop is nice, though.

With the success of Apex Legends, EA likely will care about traditional game development even less now.

That's an absurd amount of money.

I need to become a CEO.
