So I've been toying with the idea of building a system to play literally the only 3 games I play: Just Cause 3, Starcraft 2, and Doom 2016 in Vulkan. I've a 4k tv and want to use it but a budget since the TV was a bit pricey.

Keep in mind Doom is likely the only game to work at 4k, the others I don't mind playing at 1440p.

I was looking at the GTX 1660ti but I am unlikely to find this used for 300, a Vega 56 flashed to 64 (seen a few on the FS/FT) but this is older tech though AMD seems to like Vulkan. Also the Vega will likely work better in Linux using proton/steam -- but if I must use Windows so be it -- it's for games anyway.

The rest of the system would be a used 2700x probably, 16-32GB of ram, and a 950pro nvme drive I have.

Not looking to start a flamewar just looking for thoughts.

Basing this on my experience with a Nitro Vega 56 at 4k, and also this:

If Doom is the only want you want to play at 4k AND you're using Vulkan AND you want to run Linux, then a Vega 56 or 64 would be a really good option. My 56 seems to play at 4k just fine for simpler/older games, and is no hassle in Ubuntu.

1070ti or 1080 would be good options as well, but it depends on how much you prefer open source driver support in Linux, and how much time you want to spend deal hunting.

Ahh yeah true. I’m eying a Vega 56 flashed to 64 that’s where I’m getting the price point.

Yeah, how much do you think I can pick one up for on FS/T If I get a 'good' deal? Like maybe 10% discoutn would be AMAZING

That will be my next card in all likeleyhood

what a find

Yea all I need to do is sell my old GTX 970 for around 100 bucks to complete the deal.

I don't think there's any point to get a GTX 1660ti for MSRP when you can get a used 1080 for around the same price and it will perform better....but you'd be buying used. If you aren't in a rush you can find some wicked deals on eBay/craigslist.
