Get Ready for Targeted Ads on Your Smart TV

We use Roku's all over the house. Sure they're probably collecting SOME data but nowhere near what the "smart" function of a smart TV is collecting.

Whats a smart tv? Oh you mean when you connect it to the internet? Yeah never going to do that crap as there is no point. Even if in the future every TV has smart capabilities i will never connect it to the internet.

stupid ads everywhere. The gas pump commercials make me want to stab the screen.
Pro-tip, there is a mute button for those on most pumps. Press the second button from the top on the right side of the screen. That one will usually mute the ads.

Hmm thanks. Honestly didn't know that. Will try next time.

Do they still make tvs in the 40 inch range that are 4k and dumb? I deliberately bought a prior year model sony Bravia 1080p last upgrade to avoid the smart nonsense. Would like some suggestions for one thats good for pc gaming...

I wouldn't connect it to the wifi and I don't have cable but all of the extra features are a clutter and the remotes are annoying as it us... I mean my dads new tv has a microphone and its own built in cortana clone.. wtf do I need that for?

I will never get a "smart" TV if this is the direction they will go. If the last TV ever sold is a "smart" TV then I will find a way to make a monitor work.

"Enhance the viewing experience," my ass.

Smart monitors wont be far behind. Every 20 minutes you'll get a few hygienic product ads.. you know to reduce eye strain since you were staring at word too long.

They'll also have a buy now touch button that makes meow noises when you hit it, so kitty will be making out your credit card while you're on the john.

Can I have a "Dumb" TV please? Pleaaaaaaaaaaaaaase! I just want the monitor aspect without the crap...for the rest I always like to hook up an HTPC and do whatever I like.

I, too, prefer to be tracked by google and facebook rather than Disney, Comcast, NBCUniversal, and other top media companies.

just whitelist [H]... but this is really the future.... is there a similar thing for porn or other junk sites? like a community maintained GTFO white/black listing of servers for various types of networks (work, home, PG-13/etc...)
It doesn't work that way.. you don't whitelist websites, you'd have to whitelist the advertising service. At least I haven't found a way to do it on an individual website level.

I'm sure there are other solutions for blocking different types of websites but pi-hole is just for advertisements.

Ive only encountered one pump so far that it doesnt work on, but every shell station i have been to it will mute them.

Wow you guys got the Ads on the gas pump before chip in pin ? (assuming US)
Wow, I would buy an electric vehicle ASAP lol

Do they give you gaz rebate or points based on how many ads you watched lol ? Like F2P cellphone games, watch another ad and double the reward.

Those have been a thing for years, but only at some stations.

That would've been nice, but no. Oh, wait, let me thing: the Vizio guy told us the score: "gas prices would be higher if we didn't play ads." (Nobody tell him that the stations that show ads are already generally more expensive anyway.)

Glad I got at least 1 dumb TV (83" DLP) in the basement! Turn it on and instantly watch what I want without adds being forced down your throat.

Well dang, I just bought a Vizio P55. I don't do much if any streaming on it, so I doubt this will affect me much.

So far haven't seen anything on mine. I suspect it could be in the "Home" of streaming or teaming with TV provider. I can't grasp them adding ads to my content. Imagine been online on the PS4 and getting an ad served in the corner...
Wow

No one is forcing you to buy these products..

Yeah, lets see how that pans out in a few years when every premium TV has these adds, because lets be honest, it's free money for the manufacturers. They'd be stupid not to do it. And the consumer will be left without a choice.

Man, I have a Vizio tv I use as a 4k monitor. Yeah I will not buy a tv that does this stuff again. :(

No, the ads start as soon as you start pumping. This is in TX. But the mute button works like 9/10 times for me.

Guess I'll just buy "dumb" monitors from now on, then. Already have an ATSC receiver.

I noticed what after I installed a Pi-Hole in my network some of of the Roku steaming channels 'skipped' the advertising while playing a movie.

Pretty obvious media corporations want to turn back the clock for that sweet sweet ad money and turn streaming into Cable.

If its a standard, then someone will invent a box that will filter that will filter the ad out.
