66,000 Louisiana residents are collectively $26 million richer as a file ran "abnormally," causing duplicate tax refunds on Wednesday, March 13. Many of these "double refunds" were direct deposited and banks are being notified of the overages. Refunds sent to debit cards are being "backed out." Division of Administration spokesman, Jacques Berry "urges anyone who received a larger refund than what they are actually due to not spend the money."

"It was a file abnormality," Berry said. "The file ran twice when it was only supposed to run once." "Hopefully we'll recover the vast majority of it before anyone mistakenly spends it," he said. "We appreciate taxpayers' cooperation while we recoup the overpayments," Commissioner of Administration Jay Dardenne said in a statement.

Maybe they should hold onto it for 12 months and then return it with no interest? See how the govt likes it.
Your govt hate is misinformed, again. I had to file an extension last year and when I got my refund it was more than I what I filed. IRS paid me interest on my refund.

Yup, because they will pull the money out of the bank, and if that overdraws you them that's your problem to deal with those bank fees

He is referring to taxes paid in over the year, and getting a refund of some of those dollars which do not include interest. This is very common idea, surprised you read their intent/meaning differently. That said, I would agree the tone and some attitudes to this is overblown/stated in general. Its not some big conspiracy solely to get extra free "interest".

You appear to be talking about interest paid on the refund amount from when it was supposed to be paid to you vs when it was paid to you due to your extension (just going by what you said, no idea if it works that way). I personally would argue in this case you should not have gotten the interest, since you requested the extension.

I love how if the government makes a mistake they want their money back but if you don't file properly, they can jail you or in most cases they just get to keep the extra you didn't claim! How about an entire industry that leeches of everyone because you need to be an accountant in order to calculate the right return or payment in? Don't even get me started on people who cheat the system to get extra money back, in most cases several thousand more than they paid in. Flat rate, no returns and other BS please! Make everyone pay their part and charity something to feel good about not a tax write off.

Again? Have I ever talked with you before? Either way, I have never been paid interest on the taxes they overwitheld. Perhaps you just got overpaid and need to pay them back. The govt doesn't pay interest, only expects it.

Nope, received a 1099-INT from the federal govt for interest paid. The catch is this note on the 1099-INT, This amount may represent interest on an over payment for more than one year. See dandirk's post #18.
The again is a reference to all the govt is bad rhetoric I have been hearing since the Reagan days. Govt works when corrupt criminals are not in office.

Private companies (Banks, Hotels, Car Rental come to mind) do things like this all the time... Ever make an appointment/reservation and show up and it cam't be filled (for any numerous reasons), sometimes they will give you something but its nothing like the penalty applied to YOU if you don't cancel/change outside of X days.

I agree the complexity of the tax system is a problem and ultimately gives advantages to those with resources to take advantage of them. Flat rate is not really a solution though, at least within current tax income structure simply due to how a flat % effect is disproportionate. It might work if you pushed way more into usage based taxes and fees and keep the flat rate really low.

The complexity problem is 2 fold: 1. Politicians (all of them) need election $$$ so they can't take away anything (unless its from the opposing party), they can only add more funding/breaks to get more money. 2. We the people (both sides of the isle)... Doesn't matter what people rattle off in forums/twitter etc, when push comes to shove everyone wants their money and jump through hoops to have someone else pay. The mortgage tax break is a great example, it was created partially due to ease high interest rates. Now that they are low one would think the break is no longer needed but it is extremely difficult to correct since no one wants to pay for their values, both people and the industries involved.

Why don't banks and Telecom billing make mistakes in the customers favor? Certainly the opposite
