A recently updated file in coreboot's Github repository seemingly corroborates previous rumors that claim Intel's upcoming Comet Lake processors could pack up to 10 cores. The "report_platform.c" file contains references to various Comet Lake CPU + Graphics core configurations, including a "CometLake-S (10+2)" config.

The listing also suggests that Intel will launch low power, 6-core U-series parts for laptops, as well as a variety of other 2, 4, 6, and 8 core configs designed to supplement or replace the existing Coffee Lake and Whiskey Lake lineup.

From what I read it looks like it will still be 14nm meanwhile AMD will be on 7

Intel keeps teasing 10nm chips and then keeps releasing 14nm parts...c'mon Intel!...I thought Ice Lake was next to be released but instead we're getting another 14nm refresh??!!

I wonder how many vulnerabilities they'll be able to pack in there.
Most of Intel's security mitigations have been in the BIOS and in software. I was in a discussion with someone who shot me a slide if how Intel already fixed everything. I kept digging and discovered they haven't done shit, on a hardware level. Anything they implement into hardware will destroy their lead over AMD in the market place.

Wonderful, another 14nm++++++++ processor. Intel is gonna be lagging for a while. I'm sure it and 10nm when it comes out for desktops in 2020 will be fast, with zero security ;)

I kinda *yawn* at this headline. If it IS still on 14nm I don't see how it's anything to be excited about. It's going to run hot. Which means every component in the system is going to cost more money; and it's probably not going to be clocked HIGHER (read faster) than previous chips. So whoop. Go buy a threadripper now.

This is an acknowledgement by Intel that AMD is about to release a new CPU product line that will push Intel even further behind. Intel is trying to make people hold off buying the new AMD parts by promising something wonderful in the unspecified and probably distant future.

Simply put, I read this as Intel being really worried about Ryzen 3. Yea!!! I'm looking forward to Ryzen 3!

My only concern for my next upgrade from my now ancient i7 HEDT is how badly do I need the PCIe lanes (not so much the cores) so I can decide if I go top Ryzen or bottom Threadripper with Zen 2.

It really surprises me how after so many years at some point I completely lost track of Intel sockets, cores and lakes. almost as if they had fallen out from existence.

It wasn't the milking over the years as much as the pathetic overreaction and chaos when first gen Zen slapped them in the face.
And after crap like VROC keys and absolutely disappointing -after so much teasing- Optane I simply don't care about Intel.

I really love motherboards like this one... but for some reason can't conceive getting an Intel anymore. Yeah probably wrong lake or socket or motherboard or whatever... just sorry Intel, don't care.

Don't worry, there is a demo incoming on how this new chip can 5.0ghz on all cores on air* (As long as the air is passing over the coils of the industrial laser water chiller)

Depends on how much expansion you need or if you want to go with SLI or carry over existing SLI setup. It does seem that SLI has been kind of dead lately, though some games do support it and in some it works anyway but results vary. With pricing of new cards it's kind of hard to afford SLI setup. Beyond that, only thing that Intel offers over AMD is Thunderbolt. If you don't care, you can go with either but when I was looking, comparable setup wasn't much cheaper with AMD. A fairly high end setup if you're looking at HEDT range, costs about the same. Sure you get more cores with AMD but are they really needed? VROC is total bullshit and pain in the ass as I can speak from experience. Optane doesn't do anything if you go with M.2 NVMe SSD. So honestly the platform have gotten very close in terms of features and performance but so had the price unless you compare top end and need lots of cores, then AMD gives you a better deal for your money. Both have questionable reliability and stability according to reviews, so I've been holding off. Don't need it that bad...

Word is that Intel is moving their HQ to Minnesota, the "Land of 10,000 Lakes", and will debut their Ice Lake architecture sometime during the winter at an Ice Fishing Tournament at Lake of the Woods (probably because they'll, too, run hot and there will be all-you-can-pump chilled water beneath their feet!)

Largest Walleye gets you their highest end HEDT chip. Largest Sauger gets you the top model Desktop chip. Largest Burbot will get you a slap in the face with it and the highest end model of Atom!

Intel to AMD: "Hold my beer, I got this!"

(For anyone who has gotten this far and still isn't sure... yes, I'm kidding. Also yes, I was born and raised in MN.)

This was first reported back in Nov of last year no? So looks like this confirms it, AMD owns 2019, hopefully Intel can counter in 2020, love that competition is back, 2003 all over again!

In what way does AMD own 2019? Last time I bought a GPU, Nvidia had the faster and more power efficient product. Have things changed and if so how?

Did you get lost along the way in you AMD bashing quest? This is a CPU thread. The GPU threads are thataway --->

Ok fair enough. Let me rephrase my question so it will be easier for you to understand.

Think I'll wait for benchmarks. 2019 will be a year AMD improves their margins, but I am not so sure about new performance crowns.

Strong performance from Ryzen 2 with great value and continued price drops for Ryzen 1, lots of excitement for Ryzen 3/TR3 as opposed to random Cascade Lake / Cooper Lake / Comet Lake / Crap Lake with Ice lake no where in sight.

I realize this was bait as you will counter with "oh yeah, the 9900k crushes all!" but that ok.

Bait? What do you mean by that? My best CPU is an i5-2320 and I'm never going to upgrade my CPU for the rest of my life. I find that really funny that you think I would ever be willing to run a 9000 series Intel CPU.

Respect!

I almost forgot Cannon Lake. Then again, Crap Lake fits it better anyhow.

Ryan Shrout knows Intel is screwed by having to hire him. I'm starting to think they bought him to bury him.

Intel is making the "ARM will kill x86" a self-fulfilling prophecy at break-neck speed.

I guess Jim Keller will infuse some life in Intel but CPU wise anything Lake-ended can be considered Zombie Lake, dead in the water.

Isn't a comet made of ice I suppose when it crashes into something it would make a lake.
