I have seen some people use old mining cards for gaming, is it a big hassle and do you need to disable security all the time to use it? I was interested, I saw it on LTT, but the 1060s are sometimes even the same price now.. is it worth getting for about 100 shipped from China? I seen 1060s sell (fast) for 110. Plan to use for some gaming and some neural network programming.

$125 Rx 580s $200 1070s. No reason. Linus did it to prove it could be done. There is no actual reason to do what he did.

What kind of mining card are you talking about? Regular cards used for mining? It's just a matter of putting it in and running a new driver (maybe flashing back an old bios if yours was bios modded).

Or are you talking about specific mining cards like the P106 cards?

The P106, sorry should have mentioned that. Since it has no video out theres a workaround, not sure if its an OS thing or a bios thing. I usually use linux.

$145 1060s then. There were 1070 and 1080 p10 cards as well i think. Still not worth it

At that point its like 40% markup for same performance. Should I just wait for the 1660 to drop 1060 even more? For the 1070 and 1080 versions I agree its not worth it, but this one is so much cheaper in comparison...

If they are like $60 and your not using them for gaming then possibly. You should be able to use them as render cards and use an el cheapo as a main display. The GTX 1070 runs as fast as a 1660 TI with more ram to boot. You wont get the GTX 1060 any cheaper till the 1650 drops providing the 1650 runs like a 1060 and is in the $179 range

I honestly don't know how it works. I see them for $70ish but after shipping from china it goes up quite a bit.

They use a hacked driver that passes the GPU power through a fake display which is connected to the other video card. If you are rendering, mining or folding you could use the card as is with stock driver but it will not game.

I wouldn't touch them, just my 2 cents, but the card will have no resale value, and the experience will be worse than just getting a GTX 1060, as you will need to have the hardware to implement the workaround restricting the cards use to specific system setup.

If you don't mind getting scammed go ahead. Never buy anything from China is my personal rule unless I have to.
