BLOODBORNE - Gamescom gameplay trailer

Yeah the First Boss was best and most memorable just this tall freakish thing on a Bridge shreaking at you.

To me I think the most memorable boss was the Undead Giant in the Chalice Dungeons. He wasn't exactly cool looking, but that fight took forever. Based on memory, I bet I had to hit him 30+ times...almost like I wasn't doing something right. He's also notorious for having several 1-shot (or nearly 1-shot) kill attacks. The game generally wasn't as tough as the Souls games, but that guy certainly was. That fight is still ingrained in my mind and I haven't touched the game in like a year.
For atmosphere, Ebreitas and Martyr Logarious were pretty cool. The 3 Shadow of Yarnham bosses were kind of cool.
Even though it shouldn't be that bad, I always struggled with Vicar Amelia. Something about her movement and all of the rags made me have a hellish time dodging. I bet I died more times vs. her than all of the other bosses from Bloodborne and Dark Souls 3 combined...which is kind of sad.

there was 1 boss in the Chalice Dungeon that was really annoying (it's been awhile since I played so I forgot his name)...it was the dungeon where your health is cut in half and that dude was crazy hard...might have been Undead Giant

necro
which I think for this game is apropos

So...
I got a PS4 Pro.
Finished Uncharted 4.

Decided to fire this game up. I did the contract thing. The werewolf killed me immediately. After 2 hours of running around a graveyard thing and reading all of the shit on the ground, I finally figured out that I had to go to the headstones to get back into the game.
So, I found the one that took me back to where I died. I am now fighting the werewolf with my karate. While running around the graveyard, I received 2 gifts that said they gave me the blunderbuss and the ripper thing. But I don't seem to have them, well, no button I push produces them, so I continue to try to defeat the giant werewolf with karate.

Sometimes I last a long time, sometimes he kills me instantly. Believe me, I chop the absolute shit out of this motherfucker and he don't die. Is that part of the game and am I supposed to do something else?

I am not worried about spoilers. Please don't hesitate to tell me secrets. I will not be offended if you ruin the game for me. It is already ruined. Just want to be able to progress and not feel like I wasted my money.

I don't actually know anything about the game. but my understanding about the combat is that you are supposed to use the gun to stagger the enemies and then attack. if you have already been doing that, then i'll quietly slink away....

This game is essentially the developers giving HP Lovecraft a blowjob. It is amazing.

Does it have any Pro features?

would love to have a gun.
it said I got one while running around the graveyard. people can leave messages and gifts etc, I guess...
maybe I have no ammo.
there is a thing in the graveyard where I think you could buy ammo but I have no money.

This leaves me fighting the giant werewolf with karate. werewolf is using fang fu.

Just go around killing all the lesser dudes and gather the points to level up a few times. This increases your damage dealt/amount you can take. Do that by visiting the doll in the dream world or whatever. Should be able to equip the gun through your inventory, and get bullets from dead guys. Yea I died for around 4 hours straight and didn't even reach the first lantern until I read a few tips lol.

The gun and sword-thing are in your inventory. You have to go in and equip them. I don't remember the buttons to do that right now (the inventory system is not intuitive, but once you figure it out works pretty well).

I think your hit Start (option on PS4?) and go to equipment and choose the gun and the saw thing there. There will be sections for both.

perhaps I did not accept the gifts correctly? I was in the graveyard running around reading all of the things on the ground. I distinctly remember 2 of them very close together offering me gifts of a gun and a saw type thing.
I cant imagine I fucked up on accepting those gifts but with this game I am starting to realize that may be possible.

I have read the manual and know how to open the inventory...
nothing there.

so I don't have to fight the werewolf? is there somewhere I can go and fight lesser dudes. I thought I was at the lesser place trying to fight the werewolf.

literally nothing is too stupid. I don't know where to go or what to do.

all of the online guides urge you not to watch videos and to figure it out on your own but... fuck.... been gaming since the 286 days.... original Nintendo... this is fucking stupid... if I didn't know better I would say the whole game is going in and karate chopping a werewolf.

If I have to I guess I will watch how to do it on youtube. pretty fucking sad.

If the gifts aren't in your inventory then they're still on the ground on the steps up to the house by the gravestones in the dream. Die to the werewolf on purpose and check for them there.

Yes, Bloodborne (and all the Souls games) are really brutal to get in to, but once you do they're really great. Don't let trying to chop the werewolf to death ruin it for you. You're basically supposed to die to the thing once, wake up in the dream, wander around and get your weapons, then go back and kill it. Not that you're ever directly told that.

Oh my bad. I thought you were referring to the place where you had to fight two werewolves before the 1st boss. So yea you need to open your inventory, think select on ps4? Then equip them to left arm/right arm. Then you can toggle them with the d-pad left/right I believe. Sorry been a long time since playing, but it is an awesome game once you figure out the basics.

Those big ass werewolves are pretty challenging for how early you have to face them. If you choose the Axe as your gift, swap to 2-hand (L1) and practice using the charge-up R2 attack. It spins around (so you don't have to be accurate) and it knocks enemies down. It's great for powerful foes and crowds.

You need to EQUIP the weapons once they are given to you...hit the start button and familiarize yourself with your inventory. That is where you can assign your right and left hand weapons.

So, I was pulling up the inventory but nothing is showing.
Finally figured out that you have to go to where it looks empty and select and then more stuff pops up.
Pretty easy to kill once you have the weapon.

I had to go to bed after that. Will play more today. I should be good. I don't know if anybody ever karate chopped that werewolf to death but I swear I came close a couple times. Got good at the jump back and dodging.

Thanks!

Against my own better judgement, I'm replaying this after making a Dark Souls 3 NG+ run.

I always remember the game being easier, but it's waaaay easier than the DS games. I've only died maybe 2-3 times and am already in the swamp. Even my nemesis, Vicar Amelia, went down on the first attempt.

Beyond the Hunter Axe's charge-up R2 being overpowered, I'm noticing that when enemies miss, they tend to linger in their whiff animation much longer than in Dark Souls. In general they seem to telegraph a lot more, too. As long as you're either attacking first or waiting for them to miss, it's smooth sailing. The toughest enemies I've encountered are the other hunters near the healing church. It seems like your gunfire does next to nothing to enemies (outside of using it as a parry) but enemies hurt you a ton with theirs.

Never played the DLC before, so I suppose that'll be new to me. I'm sticking with the Hunter Axe the whole way if I can.

EDIT: Even good 'ol Rom (who took me something like 20 tries before) went down in a heap on the first try. I did die once on the Shadows of Yharnam, though. That's a tough fight thanks to them having unnatural reach and heavy damage.
They say knowing is half the battle, and I'm finding that true. Not wasting levels on stats I don't need = also very important. Everything has been going into Strength and Health so far and it has been a game changer. Rom can't 1-shot you with 30 in health and that made all the difference.

Managed to complete the normal part of the game. Honestly, I think the key to making the game extra easy is probably just boosting your health to at least 30. At that point, nothing will 1-shot you anymore. The enemies don't have the same death combos that they do in Dark Souls, either. Most just swing 1-2 times and then just sit there. You can typically mad dash away from anything to heal. The larger enemies give you all day to get behind them and use your charge up attack. Of the entire list of bosses, the only ones that killed me were Gasgione, Shadow of Yharnam, and Micolash. Micolash didn't actually even kill me, but I managed to die from a fall when I wasn't paying attention.
I haven't messed with the chalice dungeons much (they're boring) but I suppose I might end up giving some more a try later.
One thing I am noticing is that my Axe seems to get more and more fragile as I power it up. When I got to +10 it seems like it breaks every time you finish an area. If you try to kill 2 bosses in one go, that's not happening. Earlier that didn't seem to be an issue.

I just started the Old Hunters DLC. It's definitely kicked up compared to the normal game. Not necessarily super hard, but there are lots of enemies and it's a war of attrition with my now fragile Axe being on the verge of breaking.

Done with the Old Hunters, but it wasn't easy. It's most definitely Dark Souls level hard. It might not be DS2's DLC hard, but it's on par with the normal games. The giant shark enemies are incredibly tough and they're the first enemies I can recall where locking on makes them broken. I honestly don't think you can dodge some of their stuff if you're locked on because you're short hopping instead of rolling.
The bosses were challenging, but still tame by Souls standards. Each of them killed me at least once, but 2-3 tries was enough for each one. I did appreciate that 2 of the bosses were essentially humanoids. Those fights are more fun to me. Too many monsteroid enemies have abnormal hitboxes and excessive reach that never sits well with me. Plus, in this game it seems like most monsteroid bosses love standing around for you to charge up your R2. That move hurts too much...while normal swipes barely hurt at all.

Almost raged quit with Martyr Logarius...not sure what it was, did that guy like +20 times before getting him...kind of a long walk to get to him each time. Micolash I had to kind of cheat...I would drop down and get one shotted every time.

I suppose those two bosses I just could not get the timing down, while managing my stamina and health.

That's understandable. The first time I played through the game I couldn't beat Vicar Amelia to save my life. I really think having high HP is the key to dealing with lots of the harder bosses. Logarius and Miclolash (and Rom and Ebreitas) can 1-shot you if your health is only around 20. Once I bumped it up to 30'ish, the days of being instakilled are over.
This time around I actually read a note on the ground that told me to shoot Micolash from above during that chase. I chipped him down with all 20 of my bullets (my gun skills are minimal) and I'm sure that helped make that fight a bit easier than usual. I remember dying during that fight several times last time as well.

I also noticed that some weapons just simply aren't that great. I blame the over-reliance on the charge-up R2 attack to do damage. Normal hits just doing hurt anything much and if your weapon has a slow or lousy R2, the game is going to be harder than if someone is using the Axe. I'd love to take that Axe and its charge up attack into Dark Souls.

Looking forward to a Bloodborne 2 at some point, but there are now a lot of rumors that one isn't coming any time soon. Hopefully those rumors aren't as accurate as the Far Cry 5 ones were.

That sounds really cool (I am into Lovecraft themes), but I have never been able to get into Dark Souls at all, so I am guessing I will not enjoy this one.

Bloodborne is Dark Souls in a new wrapper- Victorian London setting...and with faster gameplay...if you don't like Souls games I doubt you'll like Bloodborne

I actually bought a PS4 just for Bloodborne...well worth it...I ended buying a few other games as well (Uncharted 1-4, Last of Us) and eventually sold my PS4 1.5 years later

Mmm I don't know, I personally didn't really care for the Dark Souls theme, but Bloodborne is savage as hell.

Tough to imagine someone who doesn't like Dark Souls enjoying Bloodborne and vice versa. The visual themes differ a little, but it's not a night and day thing.
The biggest difference is that Bloodborne puts a much bigger focus on movement (you can dash or roll almost endlessly) rather than blocking.

I think a lot of people still rank Bloodborne as the best PS4 game ever released...even over Horizon Zero Dawn

I don't have Horizon, but I'd put it in my top 3. Destiny and Uncharted would be the other two. While completely out of left field, I totally love Rush of Blood for the PSVR, too.

10 gig patch took me to 1.09.
Don't know if that included any pro features. looks awesome.
No pro patch. Crazy, considering that its an exclusive on which Sony gave a lot of first party support for the engine.

And "Boost" mode on the pro, makes almost no difference, for Bloodborne. If you run through an area and attract several badguys, you can avoid a couple of dropped frames here or there. But that's it. Still the same issues with frame pacing and hitching, as well.

Bloodborne is free for PS+ members in March!!...anyone who hasn't played what is still today probably the best PS4 title should not pass this up...

PlayStation Plus subscribers will get access to two big PlayStation 4 exclusives as part of their membership in March: From Software’s Bloodborne and Insomniac Games’ Ratchet & Clank...

Yeah, just saw this. Pretty awesome and I've been wanting to play it. Just got through playing Nioh as well, so I'm definitely not afraid of dying a lot, hah.

Did they fix the dupe glitch yet? Haven't played since the first few months it came out, I'll definitely have to pick it up again as I sold my old copy.

Thanks, there's a hunter statue from Prime 1 coming out later and they're working on Eileen and The Doll. Gecco has some Dark Souls/Bloodborne 1/6th scale statues too.

Has Bloodborne's performance changed recently? I bought the game long ago and was put off because of what appears to be bad frame pacing; I played it this week and, while it still looks like it's struggling to run 30 FPS, it doesn't appear as jittery. My TV and AV receiver are still the same and I've not changed any settings there, same PS4 Pro, but of course it has probably had a few system updates since the last time I noticed the issue.

Anyway, I suck at the game. I think my first character was milquetoast, I got about 10 minutes into the game and didn't play much, decided to restart so I could remember the buttons and I started with a 'warrior' character and I'm guessing that makes the game more difficult because I've yet to find a weapon and I'm at the same place I was with my milquetoast guy. I might just need to restart with milquetoastman again.
