Volvo to Impose 112 MPH Speed Limit on All New Cars from 2020

I'm guessing you haven't driven in certain areas of the country.

So, you just made the argument for geo-fencing for limiting vehicle speeds didn't you?
Perhaps higher speed limits in remote areas where traffic is far and few in between and distances are great.....and limited to much lower speeds where there is more traffic or congestion?

Some of the posts gave me a great idea....incorporate speed reduction capabilities into ALL vehicles, then implement them based on driver record. So what if it follows the vehicle in the beginning? That driver is still most likely to be driving a vehicle registered to his or her name. Perhaps later incorporate transponder chips (similar to what's already in use for vehicle security), that is embedded into the Driver license.

No driver license....car won't start. Now if the driver keeps circumventing the laws or restrictions, then let the courts deal with them accordingly.

Not advocating it....just saying how it "might" be done.

I can only imagine what a clusterfuck that would be if speed limiters were adjusted like that. How would that even work?

That's nice. You'll continue to be able to go that fast in that car in the future as well. Nothing is going to change there as far as I'm aware. Though it's not really relevant to the fact that Volvo is choosing to focus their future efforts on vehicles that don't go over 112mph as part of their drive toward safety.

But when I replace it next year as it approaches the end of its four year factory warranty, I won't be replacing it with another 2021 XC90 if there isn't a Volvo supported way around it. In the big grand scheme of things, this probably won't matter to Volvo at all, but I'll go back to German SUV for my family hauler.

The SPA platform was designed with the idea of keeping the vehicles up to date and Volvo includes the latest software updates in the yearly servicing. By keeping the vehicles on the same software versions, this speed limit update certainly could be forced on current owners.

An example of this is when the 2018 XC90s were released and they did the total software update to the 2016 and 2017 models they changed the functionality of the backup camera. Whenever you put the vehicle into reverse it will only show the rear view instead of keeping whatever view you were currently on. Oh you were using Top Down view to park, too bad, here's the rear view because that's what we now mandate for the default view in reverse.

I can only imagine what a clusterfuck that would be if speed limiters were adjusted like that. How would that even work?

They can already do this with Pilot Assist. You can set it to follow the road speed and as it reads the road signs and the limit changes, it adjusts for you.

not sure how it is in the states ( i am told you cant do this here)
But in Denmark you can drive with citizen emergency. normally requires emergency lights on and a white cloth attached to the car.
At this point you are allowed to be ( but still responsible for) going above speed limtis and run red lights.

Once at the destination you have to call the police to inform about the drive so they can cancel out and close cases opened by people calling in your mad driving.

You would need a way to bypass this in such system so you can driver in emergency mode.

Heheh,

This here's 'Murcia, that kind of a system would laughably screamed at as government overreach.

/shrug, my car's navigation system (that I didn't want mind, my phone works, but my wife wanted the 360 Backup Camera and they came as a set), already knows what the speed limit is.

I mean, granted, it doesn't know about construction/etc, but it's there, in the database

It could, but I haven't seen anything to suggest that they are planning on doing that. Only that future vehicles will be impacted. If they expanded it to previous vehicles I'd be a little more sympathetic to people's complaints.

Regarding the pilot assist, you learn something new everyday. I didn't know they could be set to monitor and adjust like that. Although I suppose it makes sense when you've already got adaptive cruise control, etc.

Last I checked on Volvo's "Software for Life" program it applied to infotainment systems only, not ECU's or transmission software.

I know this, because they declined to update my transmission software for free :p

If it were up to me I'd make anything with a center of gravity higher than a Taurus require a CDL, and only issue CDL's based on demonstrated business needs, and then also require that they only be driven for business purposes, to get these heaps off the road except for those who truly need them.

On SPA vehicles it's a complete system update. If they didn't do one, take it back and demand that it happen. Prior to the SPA vehicles they definitely didn't do as much. The SPA Polestar tunes just got an update to more rear bias torque distribution as part of the system update.

Here's the update where they screwed up the rear camera view: http://volvo.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/9837.

It's depressing seeing so many people today welcoming nanny states and nanny companies. They would be happiest with no control, agency or personal responsibility at all. Heh, maybe ideal Volvo customers now that I think about it.

Which is more depressing?
That...or the vast and increasing number of people not able to control themselves or act responsibly without such limitations......or driving impaired?

There is nowhere on a public road that you need to go 112 MPH, ever.

You've obviously:

1 -- Never robbed a bank
2 -- Never been lit up with outstanding warrants or a brick of Heroin in the boot
3 -- Never stolen a car before
4 -- Never taken part in the Outlaw Street Racing scene
5 -- Never been in a Jerry Bruckheimer film
6 -- Never driven a Limo through LA while California is breaking up and sliding into the ocean (see #5 for clarification)
7 -- Never driven an ambulance with Dom DeLuis, Farrah Fawcett, and a Doctor who likes to self-medicate in the back
8 -- Raced up Pikes Peak or around the Isle of Man

;)

If they can make cars drive without driver interaction, this should be a breeze actually.

Freedom is a great thing.......it's just that truth be told,..... problem is, far too many apparently can't handle it.

Ah, the last several years have flown by. I sometimes forget that my newest Volvo is 10 years old now, and quite a bit has changed in that time.

Why do you hate Freedom?

Not that I disagree AT ALL, I think SUV/CUV/Large Trucks are an ego-centric abomination that needs to be destroyed, or at least severely curtailed. (outside of valid use cases, but those would realistically represent less than 10% of current totals)

Editing in example, because ancedotes are valid data points too!

A neighbor has an Diesel F-350 Dually that he "needs for work".
Now, he is actually a contractor, so maybe he does.

Except, he drives to work, and gets in his van, which works way better.

His 4 year old Dually has not a scratch in the bed, he has NEVER used it for work.
But, it has a brush guard (spotless/scratchless), a lightbar BRIGHTER THAN THE SUN, etc, etc, etc, etc.

It's his cod-piece, but he can't accept that.

Seems kind of stupid to build a fast car with a beefy engine and transmission et al and then slap a limiter on it. Might as well save production cost and the cost of the vehicle for the buyer and just make a car that can't go that fast to begin with ?

This sounds like a terrific waste of tax payer dollars, and complete government over reach. Not even Europe is that bad, even with all the speed cameras they have everywhere to generate revenue.

I see all the Lurkers have dropped in to poke fun at people that actually had an interest in the conversation.

He probably uses it for towing things... which is exactly why he'd want a dually diesel instead of a gasser and towing is not an activity that would scratch up his truck/mess up his truck bed.

Thank you for number 7. Going to rewatch them all.

Most cars sold already have a limiter, all trucks have a limiter around 105mph, my 2006 Mustang had a limiter at 108mph to keep the two-piece driveshaft from coming apart.

99% of buyers will not even know this is a thing. So cool for Volvo? that's a big bragging right and great advertising tool to say 'no one dies in a new volvo'

2006 mustang had a limiter due to the driveshaft at over 108? News to me.

People have put well over 400rwhp through the stock shafts without them twisting up and if they do, it is usually on a launch.

Should be 145. Could have been drag limited
